TalkLeft Turns 7 Years Old Today

Little did I know one weekend in June, 2002, when I converted TalkLeft: The Politics of Crime, a little known website I created in 1999, into a weblog, I would spend hours every day for the next seven years on it. But, that's what I've done. Somehow, the years just flew by, and today, TalkLeft is 7 years old.

In an interview for a legal website a few years ago, I was asked what would happen to TalkLeft if a Democrat became president in January, 2009. My answer was: [More...]

The mission and direction of the blog is not so much to criticize, but rather to educate the public and encourage them to lobby our elected officials for change. For TalkLeft, that will be as necessary with a Democrat in office as it was with a Republican.

When we get a President who vows to impose a moratorium on executions, close Guantanamo, and try accused terrorists under the Code of Military Justice or in federal courts, who pushes Congress to abolish mandatory minimum sentences, put a lockbox on social security benefits and provide mandatory health care, including affordable and compassionate nursing home care for the elderly, and who has ended the war in Iraq and promised not to get us into other wars preemptively or under false pretenses, then TalkLeft's mission will be accomplished and I'll start a travel or food blog.

Obviously, we're not there yet, so TalkLeft will soldier on. Thankfully, we have Big Tent Democrat, TChris and Ethan Brown, whose unique perspectives add so much to the site. I'm also very grateful to C.H., our anonymous "man in Hollywood" for the more than 100 graphics (viewable here and here) he's created exclusively for TalkLeft over the years.

I'd also like to thank our readers and commenters who have kept TalkLeft a lively place to congregate over the years. We've had over 30 million visitors and 60 million page views.

It's no secret that independent bloggers are being over-run by corporate media -- or that writing and maintaining even a blog of modest size like this one takes a lot of time and hundreds of dollars every month.

It has always been important to me that TalkLeft remains civil in tone. I will continue to spend the time necessary to weed out the drive-bys and blog-cloggers who come here not to have a reasonable debate but to slam and insult our readers or try to hijack or dominate the discussion.

If you appreciate our coverage, or just want to buy us a birthday drink, here is the the paypal link, it's very easy (and takes credit cards even if you don't have a paypal account.)

Once again, thanks to every one of you who have read a page, posted a comment, given us a news tip, linked to TalkLeft, donated dollars and befriended us. You've made it all worthwhile.

That's what people do when they like a blog: return!

    as far as :

When we get a President who vows to impose a moratorium on executions, close Guantanamo, and try accused terrorists under the Code of Military Justice or in federal courts, who pushes Congress to abolish mandatory minimum sentences, put a lockbox on social security benefits and provide mandatory health care, including affordable and compassionate nursing home care for the elderly, and who has ended the war in Iraq and promised not to get us into other wars preemptively or under false pretenses, then TalkLeft's mission will be accomplished and I'll start a travel or food blog.
I fear we'll none of us live long enough to start that travel blog...

I'd like to think so. There are very, very few blogs on the left committed to principle and this, IMHO is one of them. The ruling class in America is once again riding the Donkey. Most pro-Republican blogs and media outlets decided to spin for the powers that be, effectively serving as Pravda for the ruling party.

I'm a critic of both parties and as Dems are now in power, they're on the hook for crimes and misdemeanors committed by millionaires and their allies looking to loot the public purse.

Which brings us to this story of an Inspector General bounced just as he produces reports exposing the financial shenanigans of the current administration.

    Happy Birthday.

Thanks for letting us vent, and for providing a structure that requires us to think a little more in order to maintain civility - the simpler %#@&* YOU! that would otherwise be posted in response to some comments often ends up being a cohesive and compelling argument upon further reflection.  Doesn't mean we're not muttering it as we type, but TL ends up getting the better parts of us.

Many thanks to Jeralyn, BTD, TChris, Ethan and all the commenters for making this such an informative, interesting, and entertaining forum. There really is nothing else like it out there. I can't think of anyone I agree with 100% of the time but the overall civility, and posts and comments that seek to inform and persuade (and even amuse) rather than to just put down all who don't agree go along way to opening my mind to other viewpoints.

This evening I'll drink a toast, but for now I'll slurp some coffee.

One of the few places where a full dialogue encouraging mostly facts takes place.  Thanks for providing that Jeralyn.  And on a sour note I read this morning that as Slado pointed out the other day the economy is letting off foul pungent fumes.  Something has died but inspite of the gagging fumes the denial is thick throughout blogistan.  I'm tired of whining and complaining.  I'm going to the beach for the rest of the week starting this afternoon.  There is nothing else to be done until everyone else wants to ditch the denial.  Nobody wants to listen to my whining anymore than I want to hear myself doing it, but it's sad because we didn't have to go here.......to such a hopeless place as the one we are heading to quickly.

it seems the insurance companies are gearing up for another "harry and louise" type ad campaign.  and the sole reason is the single payer issue.
they have been playing nice so far and saying we are ok with anything but a public option.
well, I think, no I bet, there is going to be some kind of public option and all hell is going to break lose.

one thing for sure.  when this fight is over we will know a lot more about what Obama is willing to fight for.

and who he is willing to fight.

int he bill is going to end up this confusing co-op arrangement that Susan Collins and Ben Nelson are so fond of. It will probably be too byzantine an arrangement for anyone to use, and so will be no threat to the insurance companies. Even so they will probably fight it.

Then, if Obama fights at all, he will be fighting for a pile of goo instead of a real public option.  Can you tell I'm not very optimistic about this whole thing?
