Tuesday Afternoon Open Thread

As you can see, our blogging output has been enormous . . .

I have a court hearing tomorrow. Nothing more from me until sometime tomorrow night. There must be some sort of must see TV event to discuss no?

Anyway, here is a video:

This is an Open Thread.

    tricky Obama (5.00 / 1) (#5)
by diogenes on Tue Jun 02, 2009 at 10:04:13 PM EST
Just read how Obama will "let the legislative process run" as far as taxing employer-provided health benefits.  Guess he's gonna be Pontius Pilate on this, claiming to oppose this but signing the bill if congress passes it.  At least McCain was honest on this issue.

did a pretty good job of laying Dr Tillers murder at the feet of FOX news and OReilly particularly.

That is hardly where the blame belongs (5.00 / 2) (#4)

As for what Olberman has to say, his choice of who to blame actually shows how shallow and void of real knowledge on the subject he is. I'd watch his program if I gave even the slightest d*mn. Since I don't, there is no MSNBC channel in my world.

It's hard not to interpret Olbermann's critique as anything other than a continuation of his ratings/ego war with O'Reilly at this point. All this stuff seems like a game to him, as far as I'm concerned. It's all fodder for his own self-glorification.

where does it belong if not with the people who broadcast hate against the man constantly for years.
OReilly along called him Tiller the baby killer some 40 times on air.

if you think some of the blame doesnt belong to FOX and its ilk I think you are misguided.

Then you gotta blame Rockstar Games... (5.00 / 2) (#9)
by kdog on Wed Jun 03, 2009 at 10:20:18 AM EST
everytime some knucklehead kid does a GTA impression, or Ozzy Osbourne for Black sabbath fan teen suicides...I prefer to hold individuals accountable for their actions and let the freedom of speech ring.

If you're that much of a sheep to take marching orders from O'Reilly or videogames or any form of entertainment, it's on you, not the entertainer.

Now if O'Reilly pulled an FBI anti-terrorism stunt and went undercover for a year and chirped in this bastard's ear about killing, that's a different story, then he's a co-conspirator.  But to try and blame him for the actions of a man he never met is kinda silly, imo.

running around in a video game shooting rival gang members is not the same thing as having a major TV network essentially put out a fatwa on someone.
    that is what FOX did.

is a bit much Capt...I've heard Bush called a baby killer on the air, and that's fair game too.  If some nut takes a talking head to heart and gets to murdering, that is on the nut and the nut alone.

just like taking Alex Jones more seriously than I should is my problem.

But by all means, if people want O'Reilly off the air, they can make as much noise as they want...I don't think he's worth the trouble.

or even should.  but telling it like it is and laying the blame where it belongs is IMO entirely appropriate.

I also think that Olbermans suggestion of telling any business you frequent that if they dont stop broadcasting FOX news you will take your business elsewhere is a great idea.

stand to gain some ratings points if FOX put someone else up against him.

I don't watch FOX since I'm not a Republican, or a sheeple. Olb gets out of line and out of control often enough to need a boycott of his own, IMHO.

Fox is not only complicit but essentially is the organizer of the murder of George Tiller, according to many accounts.  Few would have heard of Tiller without Bill O'Reilly's frequent ranting.

Tiller did not perform later-term abortions "for any reason!" as O'Reilly liked to lie ; the procedure had to be supported by a statement by an independent physician that giving birth threatened a major bodily function of the woman.  Without that written certification, no procedure.  O'Reilly expressed no remorse when asked, of course.

Olbermann has loved featuring O'Reilly on his worst person in the world segment, and O'Reilly has featured many evenings among the top three "worst".  Olbermann says those yucks are over, though, this man has now been killed and Olbermann won't breathe O'Reilly's name again.  What he wants you to do, if your tavern or restaurant won't change the channel, is to politely explain then why you are leaving and taking your business elsewhere.

I'm not in USA, so I can't participate.   Please see if you would like to.

their personal and valuable time watching it, then ask people who prefer not to listen to the stupid stuff that comes out of Olberman to discuss it. Get the demographic breakdown of his viewers, Capt....he doesn't attract people who can think for themselves.

Even his highest ratings (which, I doubt) aren't much of the population. Why do you watch? You mention him more often than anyone else here.

Rolling my eyes and setting my jaw isn't something I want to add to my day on purpose. Olb isn't worth a moment of attention.

    a very partisan speech:

[T]he only thing Republicans have delivered is the longest, deepest economic recession in 80 years ...

I ask ... why would we want to go back to the same falled policies that created this crisis in the first place?

Now we all know, there is much at stake in this election.

New Jersey Democrats believe that America is stronger because of its diversity.

We're proud that our state has always welcomed immigrants ... and we know they enrich our lives and our culture.

We trust women to make their own
    health care decisions ...

We believe that government should allow people the freedom to marry whomever they love ...

While we believe in the right to bear arms ... we do think that buying one gun a month should suffice.

    Our opponents disagree.

They say that government should be small ...

Small enough to slip under your bedroom door.

Small enough to root for a new president to fail ...

Narrow enough to divide us by gender and ethnicity over a Supreme Court nominee ...

Self-righteous enough to dictate their own religious beliefs to the rest of us ...

on stem cell research ... family planning ... and even science curricula.

We must be bigger than that.

Our party is black ... white ... brown ...
    all colors ...

    We're a Charles Bibbs painting.

We believe the American promise is for everyone.

Yes ... we live in challenging times ...

But I have never been more hopeful or optimistic ...

History shows we get through challenging times if we work hard and make the right choices.

Over the next 153 days, I'm going to make it clear to New Jersey my fighting spirit ... fighting for you ... and believe me ... I've been a fighter all my life.

As the son of a struggling farm family, I know what it's like to be on the long end of a shovel.

I spent my college summers pushing concrete as a construction laborer ...

I know what it's like to be toughened by basic training in the Marine Corps.

I'm proud to have served my country in uniform ... and I respect all who do.

I know what it's like to survive a near-fatal accident ... and fear that I might spend the rest of my life impaired and miss watching my grandchildren grow up.

I remember waking up in Cooper Hospital after eleven days in a coma and seeing my three kids, my brother, and the woman I love at my bedside.

I knew then ... and there ... I would walk out of that hospital.

Tonight, I feel just as confident.

We will win this fall's election!
