R.I.P. Farrah Fawcett

Actress Farrah Fawcett lost her battle with cancer today. She was 62.

It's hard to describe what was so special about her to people who weren't around in the 70's. As this writer says, she was more than a pinup on a poster, but that poster just may be the most memorable one of the era.

She was an All-American Girl at a time when a country clawed bloody by scandal and war really needed one, and The Farrah Fawcett Poster became to late 20th century America what Betty Grable was to GIs in World War II. Half the boys in the country had it on the wall and the other half didn't need to, because they'd memorized it.

She had such grace and beauty and a smile that lit up the world. At least her suffering is over. R.I.P. Farrah, and condolences to her family and friends.

had enough of the glare of the cameras and the intrusiveness of the paparrazi; maybe in one of those strange quirks of fate, the universe is seeing to it that her family and her real friends can grieve in relative peace.

That being said, I think Barbara Walters had a special one-hour interview with Ryan O'Neal planned for tomorrow (?) night, and maybe it will be a fitting tribute to her if it airs as scheduled.

Or perhaps when she took a serious turn they switched it, and that's what I heard on the news this AM. My brain's a tad fried today. ABC news ended saying they were showing MJ at 9 and the 20/20 story on her would still air at 10 (eastern times?)
When we were in HS, 4 of us booked appointments at the hair salon at the same time and all cut our long hair like hers . . .

thank you. I first saw Farrah in the 1976 film Logan's Run. I think she was actually an atypical beauty. There was something uncanny and other-worldly about the way she looked, especially in those early years. I mean, the hair, the eyes, the teeth, the skin, the radiance; one had to look at her for some time to get past being gob-smacked.

that became famous before she was ready. Married to a stuntman who got her into the business, she got used and used up, and had enough of all of it. After whatever happened between her and Lee (stories differ), she found the love of her life, and led a life of contribution and compassion.
