Rell Vetoes CT Bill to Abolish Death Penalty

As promised, Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell of Connecticut vetoed a bill that would have abolished the state's death penalty. While Rell privately agrees that capital punishment is not a deterrent, her veto message stressed the need to send a "clear message to those who may contemplate such cold, calculated crimes." Tough on crime posturing again triumphs over sound policy.

"clear message to those who may contemplate such cold, calculated crimes."

most aren't contemplated, they occur in the course of some other event. as well, as long as the death penalty has existed (probably since og first climbed out of the primordial ooze), it doesn't seem to have been a very effective deterrent. most likely because, again, most crimes covered by capital statutes aren't "contemplated" by the eventual perpetrators.

but heck, it'll make a great campaign sound-bite.

    Irrefutable logic. (none / 0) (#2)

    A. This punishment is not a deterrent.
    B.  However, this punishment sends a message.

To whom is the message addressed?
The one who will not be deterred?

over people's lives is just too appealing to republican/conservatives. Their bloodlust is undeniable.

What is so terribly dangerous in America is that the violent republican/conservative mindset, the presumed right to kill people whenever they want, the presumed necessity to invade countries whenever they want, the presumed ability to torture confessions out of people to get their way, the total disregard for individual rights and human decency is so pervasive that people don't think anything about.

The reality is that the violent republican/conservative mindset is a threat to all of us. They are seriously psychotic people that resort to violence, not even as a rational means of solving problems, but because of deeply ingrained bloodlust and sadism. These are people, free among us that are a powder keg with a lit match next to the fuse ready to go off at anything. These are people that are in serious need of professional psychiatric help, but instead they are among our political leadership, the run powerful corporations, they infest our media, they are pervasive in the police state and the military.

on the nature of "republican/conservative"s.  If you object to the spewing of Limbaugh, Hannity et al, you really shouldn't indulge in this sort of thing.
On the original subject of this thread: This (from the New Haven Register) might explain the Governor's actions: "A recent Quinnipiac University poll showed 61 percent of state residents supported keeping the death penalty."
