Monday Night TV and Open Thread

So much TV tonight. Top billing in my book: Weeds, where the Season 5 opener is on Showtime. Last season, with the addition of the "Mexican Mafia", was the most intense and best yet.

But, that's not all we've got tonight. [More...]

There's Nurse Jackie, and for those of you who watch them, the season opener of The Closer and Raising the Bar.

As for me, I'll be watching Weeds and (of course) The Bachelorette, where Jillian and her band of suitors are in Vancouver.

What are you watching? I hope it's not I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, which has to be the lamest show of the year (Patty Blagojevich is its only redeeming quality.)

For more serious fare, there's PBS's special on food and the secrets that giant food companies don't want you to know.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome. I'll be updating some of the TV stuff over on PopLeft, you can comment there or here.

    taste, I think.

The big premiere of the night is the new season of Kathy Griffin's "My Life on the D-List."  I know Jeralyn's not a Kathy fan, but on a day when we had to read about how our President thinks there is a rational basis for discriminating against us, I think we gays deserve some reason to laugh.

And to be honest, I know so little about Kathy that I didn't even know she was gay. The only time I've seen her was on a New Year's Eve special and I didn't care for her. Enjoy the show!

    She's not gay. She just has a big gay following. (5.00 / 1) (#5)

picnic, so no TV (even the Padres game).  But, tell me, should I be watching Kate and whomever w/all the kids?  Those people are taking over my life and I've never even watched the show.  Who are they and why should I care?

    I never heard of them (5.00 / 1) (#2)

A house guest pulled my copy of Hells Angels from the bookshelf and I started to re-read it myself.  I haven't opened that book in thirty-three years.

What an interesting read.  Written before Thompson developed his HST persona, it shows subtle inklings of that persona, but wrapped in a more thoughtful, informative reporting style.

And as a former inhabitant of the Bay Area, Thompson's descriptions of midnight motorcycle runs through Golden Gate Park, along Ocean Beach and down Highway 1 toward Santa Cruz are, well, delicious.

In the aftermath of the Fear and Loathing Saga, I'd forgotten what a fine almost straight (or at least only slightly bent) reporter HST could be.

In some ways, Hells Angels is almost on a par with Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail.

    nixes public option

Count Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) as a "no" vote on the public insurance option.

"I am not open to a public option, however I will remain open to a compromise - a full compromise," Landrieu told reporters Tuesday. "A public option is not something I support i don't think its the right way to go."

is that it's not a first -- they were beating a record number of people dressed as Smurfs. . . .

Somehow, thinking of how all this mess of our times will look in the history books of the future, I am reminded of fiddling while Rome burned.  But hey, a lot of Roman fiddlers had a lot of fun.

    Wait, do I smell smoke?
