Mediate Launches: When HuffPo Meets Gawker

Dan Abrams new site, Mediaite, launches today. Howard Kurtz has a rundown: it plays to the celebrity factor of journalists, and is described as "When HuffPo meets Gawker."

I've been following their twitter feed for weeks now, probably because I know and really like Dan Abrams, having guested on his shows for years, I like the site'sconcept. Rachel Sklaar is Editor at Large.

With separate pages for TV, print and online, the site aggregates plenty of content, like other media-focused portals, while also offering opinionated takes on scandal coverage, journalistic feuds, ethical questions and sundry embarrassments.

Dan's last show on MSNBC had a "Beat the Press" segment. This sounds similar. He was always the most energized during that portion, almost gleeful at times. He reportedly has funded the new site himself and it's lean, with just 5 staffers. [More...]

Donald from Hawaii puts it well, and I agree to much of what he says. Whats really funny is that term "when it's seen through the eyes of G.E.'s majority shareholders". I get a kick out of that. Perhaps Allen Greenspan is a significant share holder...his wife certainly has been instrumental in the past years as a commentator.

For me what is revealing especially after watching today, Morning Joe Mika and the rest finally admitting Sarah Palin was not liked by the McCain Camp from the get go. Sheesh, what else do they know that they might "Federal Reserve" for future comments? These guys have been breaching and dancing around in the free market as wide open perjury punks.

MSNBC is so hooked up and biased. Defining the political readiness, of anyone, Especially, Sarah Palin. Defining the national needs, instead of reporting it. All this news station talks about is a way to defined and establish guidelines. They are in a culture of the media makes the rules and as Joe in the Morning once said if you fight the media you will loose. Umm, don't think so.

MSNBC has up set me so much ever since I learned of all those connections it I wish Dan well in his quest.

One thing I miss about the loss of printed media is the fact that you just can't quite have a "First Issue Collectors Edition" with a web site.

Considering the restrictions that were self imposed on the media during the Bush years, Abram's did as good a job as he was allowed. You have to remember that the networks were totally tilted to the right. There were even guidelines as to the ratio of liberal to conservative guests. Any critism of the administration was met with screams of treason!

He did at least attempt to paint everyone with the same brush. I didn't always agree with him, but for the most part, he allowed the door to be open to discussion.

in it's coverage of the media's treatment of the recent celebrity deaths, giving journalists the "Rippy Award" for their coverage.

There cannot be too much criticism of our media. They are killing our democracy. Just read James Fallows' Jan '95 article in the Atlantic Monthly, "A Triumph of Misinformation" to see how they aided and abetted the anti health care reform crowd in the 90's. The same tactics are being used this time by many of the same players and our media is letting them get away with it.

I wonder what they think that special constitutional protection is for - prying into people's personal lives so that our democracy can flourish?
