"Squeaky" Fromme and Bruce Lisker Now Free

In Texas, "Squeaky" Fromme left prison today after serving 34 years on her life sentence. She's now 60. (Background here.)

In California, Bruce Lisker was released after 26 years. (Background here.)

Lisker was released on bail at 7 a.m., a week after a federal judge overturned his murder conviction, ruling that he was prosecuted with “false evidence” and his defense attorney did not adequately represent him.

What Lisker, locked up since age 17, now a bald middle-age man, is looking forward to:

[He wants] to go for bike rides on the beach and smell the ocean breeze, eat a bowl of French vanilla ice cream and go running in a straight line for as far as he wants to without having to jog in circles like he did in prison. He needs to apply for a driver’s license, get a copy of his Social Security number and birth certificate so he can find a job — another condition of his bail.

sure the Editor meant to equate these two, but I saw the interesting contrast. It is sort ironic, but that's sort of how this business is. The results of our legal system are anything but uniform or fair. The real injustice is the thousands of other Liskers we'll never hear about who will die in prison. If someone like Lynette Fromme ("Squeaky" was the nickname Charles Manson gave her -- he had names for all the girls in the family) walks after spending the better part of her life in jail, I don't see much problem. She was never convicted in the Manson murders. If she was, she would have been in California prison. She was in Federal prison for pointing the pistol at Gerald Ford. There was no round in the chamber. I think she just wanted the press. That doesn't make me yearn to see her die in jail.

I try not to write multiple posts on the same subject on the same day so I combined them. Sorry. Next time I'll consider doing it differently.
