Monday Night TV and Open Thread

While waiting for Weeds to start, my TV remote landed on ABC and a concert by Sugarland, who I think are great. They were singing Genevieve, the song in the video above, and I couldn't believe how much it sounded like Long Black Veil. The chords, the tempo, everything. The singing starts at 35 seconds in. Check out the three versions of Long Black Veil below, one with Johnny Cash, one with The Band, and one with Bruce Springsteen: [More...]

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

In the world of classical music, this morning (5.00 / 1) (#1)

I very much enjoyed attending a chamber music coaching workshop with the marvelous pianist John Kimura-Parker coaching three young conservatory students in a Dvorak piano trio movement.  The violinist(student of Jimmy Lin), cellist, and pianist (students at Juilliard) were each extremely talented musicians.  This was their first experience performing chamber music together.

    Always a fascinating (5.00 / 2) (#49)

thing to hear, I think.  The summer I was a student at Tanglewood, I mostly quit going to the classes I was supposed to have (lousy part of the program, so not worth the time) and just went to every student and professional rehearsal of anything I could and listened.  Bernstein was there most of that summer, and listening to him coach the conducting fellows in how to rehearse the student orchestra was both revelatory and incredibly life-affirming.

I think Obama is using Smart Power, Bill and Hillary are cool with it too.

As much hooohaa as came out of Hillary's 'boxing the ears' type statements as her somehow losing it, I believe that Obama has it all worked out.

The only place he has fallen on his face with is Saudi Arabia. They called him out for trusting Israel. They did not approve of Ross.

That it is not a good idea to use the term PUMA. Better to use less loaded language like the people who voter for Hillary and would not vote for Obama whose heads are exploding because the big dog is working for Obama.

It is also useless to use the words cultist in a derogatory fashion. Instead of either opening a dialogue or delivering a stinging blow it becomes a talking point that begets another taking point which gets boring and is counterproductive.

I didn't like him when I voted for him. I don't like him now. He's turning out pretty much exactly the way I thought he would.

I find it ironic that a lot of progressives voted for him because they thought he would be better on foreign policy than that hawk Hillary. I figured they were pretty much the same on foreign policy.

I liked her better on domestic policy. I still maintain we'd be better off with her policies than his.

The biggest disappointment with him, to me, has been his continuation/coverup of Bush's anti-Constitutional terror policies. I don't know whether HRC would have been better or not. Her vote against FISA was a pleasant surprise. I'd like to think she would have been better, but who knows?

It's tragic to me that we had a President with a real mandate for progressive change, and he's p1ssing it away with corporatist giveaways and right-wing appeasement.

    Oh well.

I have to disagree about those who were angry.  Most of the people over at MYDD and Confluence were angry at Obama directly.  That said the overwhelming number of Clinton supporters voted for Obama, especially after Palin scared the hell out of them.

but it's a matter of record two large states were disenfranchised until the race was over.  and then there was a rather embarrassing attempt to negotiate results so it could be said, in the end, they were re-enfranchised.

and most people can see for themselves which candidate benefitted from these events, and which did not.

And while I'm at it, the elections are over. You may not call people cult-like, PUMAs, Obamabats, etc. Those are being used in a derogatory fashion by some here. Disagree with the idea, don't trash the person posting.

One of my favorites is the Byrd's yes for me a melancholy mood listening to this music, and always to me, Johnny Cash was born to sing a message from the history of souls who didn't understand life.

But, here is a cut from the Byrd's that I like

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUworKXBzdE

This song called turn turn turn could likely profile what America wanted way back then an interesting thing is the lyrics according to Google are straight out of King James Bible. Now America turning the page in history, or trying too but blocked at every turn. Perhaps the vision,  there is a time for every thing relates to us. It is now.

Oh yes these guys are clear smokes or indulged in getting high but looking back at the genius of how they applied their time to bring out through personal ideals think through convolution to be able to sift out such great music word sound combinations is tribute to powerful effect that drugs did create a catalyst in the sensitivities for the good of a culture. But we should never ignore the dark side of distortion keeping with the ability to come out of chaos rather then to submit to it. Chaos and fear is the moment of change. As Obama's Chief of staff said but sensationalized as the wrong time by those of the GOP clear are panicked that this time will diminish their power especially money, with revealed corruption.

Whats really funny to me is the Conservative media keeps shooting themselves in to head by playing sixties songs, between breaks, or in the background, or as theme songs, or even just rock or pop then rant about being Conservative. Yet the GOP method of Conservative is far from sharing. Heck the rant of cutting taxes is now turning moot to sour, if that is the case, just stop tax collection for a couple of months. But that will definitely stop the free tax dollars of corruption.  We see by the dilemma we are in clearly established by the Bush administration though by in your face false rhetoric twisted to blame Obama. The original bail out money initialized by Bush was and is clearly nothing more than "Cut and Run" politics in your face covered up by our boob media.

Hey Mr. Tambourine Man sings a song for me. One part something about the boot heel needing to stop wondering...makes me reflect on the time and I do well up listening to it.
