How Stupid Are Political Reporters?

Via Greenwald, Paul Kane demonstrates just how stupid political reporters can be:

Paul Kane: No one else is gonna be switching parties any time soon, not after the way liberal Democrats have greeted Arlen Specter. That has ended any possible chance of any Republican ever switching parties to join the Dems for probably a decade or more. Why on earth would any Republican want to switch parties just so they can get attacked by the far left of the Democratic party?

(Emphasis supplied.) Ignoring for the moment the stupid "Far Left" nonsense, Earth to Paul Kane, why would a pol switch parties -- for the same reason Arlen Specter switched parties -- because it was in his personal political interest. If Specter had not switched parties, he would be a political dead man walking, as Toomey would crush him in a Republican primary. As it is, Specter is the favorite to win the Democratic primary over Sestak and has a shot in the general election in 2010. If he had stayed a Republican, it would be over already. Specter was not doing anyone any favors but himself when he switched parties. That it benefitted Dems was entirely incidental (and that's why Specter could not cut a better deal for himself with the Senate Dem Caucus. Unlike Jeffords, who really brought more to the table for Dems.)

Honestly, how stupid can a political reporter be? Kane is scraping bottom here.

Specter went from being a goner to the favorite. How is that a disincentive?

Does Kane mean that Republicans in red districts won't switch? Well, DUH. Who expects that?

    Since when was Arlen Specter (5.00 / 2) (#2)

the kind of guy who cared about people being mean to him anyway?  He goes where he wants to go when he wants to go - always has because he is one of the most politically ruthless - Machiavellian even - Members on the Hill.  The comment is not just dumb - it is also pretty ignorant.  Anyone who'd be so scared of the "far left meanies" that they wouldn't change parties deserves to lose their seat, power, etc.  Those people exist, but given the fact that switching parties is a treatcherous move any way you cut it, the cowards weren't gonna do it regardless of whether or not there are any "far left meanies" running around.

...worries about being attacked by the far left.  not like the media would make hay with it, they do their best to ignore anything resembling a real progressive left.

The question sounds like the setup for a Joan Rivers joke.

Q: How stupid are political reporters?
A: So stupid that when they see a sign that says WET FLOOR, they stand there and do it.

Is that why they're always getting wee-wee'd up?

just how stupid political reporters can be:

i think that's been reasonably well demonstrated for almost two decades now.

Kane shows just how foolish and myopic he can be.
Poor Arlen. Going from losing a primary to possibly saving his job, power and perqs.

As stupid as they want to be (5.00 / 5) (#8)

in order to garner a large salary. Maybe as stupid as their bosses want them to be.

Maybe Kane just has a selective memory (none / 0) (#9)

Jeez, those nasty far-left Democrats, right?

I think Kane may be stupid like a fox.  How about this quote from the same interview:

there is a lot of talk here about the lack of Democratic civility over the years. And man, they have behaved like little children too many times to count. I think it's pretty clear that Wilson -- and to some degree the House Rs who were waving signs and copies of bills they had introduced on health care -- crossed into new territory last night. As horribly as Dems treated Bush over the years, no one ever shouted "liar, liar, pants on fire" during his states of the union.

OK, how quickly he forgot Dick Cheney's famous "go f--- yourself" to a US senator, right?  THAT broke new ground!  Dems behaving like children?  Puh-lease.  And...Dems treating Bush horribly?  Who, and when?  As I recall, they were mostly cowed into agreeing with all the horrible things Bush et. al. were saying and doing for 8 years.

Kane, your right-wing bias is showing.

    Harry Reid (none / 0) (#10)

This site pretty well blasted Specter after the conversion and would eagerly support a primary opponent.  Only the rare dead man walking would switch.
Actually, the best qualified person to switch right now is Harry Reid, who may lose in Nevada if he runs as a Democrat.
