Sunday Evening Open Thread

Jeralyn usually does some video-themed open threads at night. But I noticed Big Brother was on, so maybe that has captured her attention. I'm watching the women's final of the US Open, while peeking in on the Bears-Packers.

This is an Open Thread.

Attn: Sibelius Rules Out Publicly Funding Abortion (5.00 / 5) (#4)
by kidneystones on Sun Sep 13, 2009 at 09:08:18 PM EST
    TPM reports

On This Week with George Stephanopoulos this morning, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius reiterated that President Obama will go farther than language in a House health reform bill now does in order to make sure no public funds go toward abortions.

Stephanopoulos asked her whether Obama would "explicitly rule out any public funding for abortion."

"Well that's exactly what the President said and that's what he intends that the bill he signs will do," she said.

The current reform 'package' doesn't represent the interests of the party that won the election; or of the party that lost. It's the worst of both worlds. Tax-dollars to Wall Street, but no support for women. It's a sell-out in every sense of the word repackaged as a 'win' for women and minorities. Did Digby post on Sibelius?

    Well, there's one difference (5.00 / 6) (#15)
by oldpro on Sun Sep 13, 2009 at 10:52:50 PM EST
between President Obama and his primary opponent.  Anyone who thinks that Hillary would have put up with this crap is nuts.  She would undoubtedly have explained to the antis that women who need abortions are taxpayers too and it's THEIR tax money that will provide those services...theirs and mine.

I know what Hillary would do about women's healthcare and reproductive rights if the power were in her hands.  I also know what Obama will do when the power is in his.

Is there no issue he won't cave on?  Nothing he will fight for?

by FoxholeAtheist on Sun Sep 13, 2009 at 11:03:25 PM EST
of the stimulus package (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act), in February of this year, we were falsely assured that it would be more 'appropriately' included in the health care reform plan.

I didn't believe it for a nanosecond. But a lot of people professed to believe it and certainly many were sincere. But, no doubt, there were Obama apologists who cynically promulgated that point of view to cover Obama's butt.

As for Obama, he didn't fight for family planning and reproductive rights then, and he's not lifting a finger now. No surprises here at all.

It's Loo-zee-anna tawk, what they do with French.  Why do they pronounce New Orleans as Nallins?  Why did they pronounce Acadian as Cajun?  Because too many syllables are too much work.  Thus, Fahv-ruh becomes Farve.  My guess.

will google it at some point. A number of birds are particularly smart (by our standards): parrots, crows, magpies, etc. I have a story about helping to rescue a duck and her brood - and, in that case, the momma duck showed VERY good judgment throughout. If I had been her, I may have lost my head. I'll try to post about it later. Cheers Fabian - good to have you around here.

Is this how Las Vegas wants to attract visitors (none / 0) (#23)
by Speaks The Truth on Mon Sep 14, 2009 at 02:33:19 AM EST
The Governor of Nevada said President Obama was hurting Las Vegas with his comments and they wanted him to apologize.

Below is how a Clark County/Las Vegas politician feels about the Las Vegas residents who are out of state.

Is this politician thinking about the best interests of the people or is it about business and giving business whatever it wants??? The money always wins and if the people don't like it......LEAVE!!!!!!!!!!!

The services that a community deserves like a solid school system, good roads, medical services and other important aspects of an adequate infrastructure are not important compared to a shooting park

Check out the link of his faux Cowboys tirade on local Las Vegas CBS posted on YouTube.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMAAw2VgVHQ

His name is Commissioner Tom Collins and this guy should be up for the worst politician of the year award.

    Las Vegas is a "destination" (none / 0) (#25)
by Fabian on Mon Sep 14, 2009 at 05:24:07 AM EST
It's entire economy depends on people coming to the city and spending money.  The economy is hurting entertainment and hospitality industries and Las Vegas is almost entirely entertainment and hospitality!

It sounds likes the politicians are lashing out instead of reaching out.

The Boss in Tampa (none / 0) (#27)
by ruffian on Mon Sep 14, 2009 at 05:58:55 AM EST
I had a great weekend! My sister came down from Memphis and we went and saw Bruce Springsteen in Tampa Saturday night. 5th or 6th row back in the pit. We were on our feet about 6-7 hours all told including the lottery lines + the show, etc, but it sure was worth it. Bruce does a lot of interaction with the diehards in the pit. He's not quite as mobile as he used to be, but still sounds and looks great and puts on an amazing show. Clarence looked great too- I think he got a hip replacement, and lost a lot of weight. We were right in front of Little Steven, which was fun since he does a lot of mugging and of course fantastic guitar.

No Patti this part of the tour though. I like her a lot, but there was almost dead silence when Bruce made a comment about 'we all send her our love'. I think I was the only one who cheered! Kind of strange there. Lots of these fans have 'issues' I fear. My sister had never been to a Bruce show, though she has been a fan as long as I have - she had kids to raise, etc. The people in the pit that have been to 50+ shows were giving her a hard time, like she didn't deserve to be in the pit. She gave it right back to them though - like 'Hey, I have a life!'. it was funny.

I was glad he did 'Racing in the Streets'. Love that one. And 'Thunder Road', which is my ringtone.  And 'Lonesome Day', going right into 'The Rising' was another highlight for me. Also pulled out some real old ones based on fan requests - 'Jolie Bonn', which I'm not sure I had ever even heard.

Anyway, if you get a chance to see The Boss, do it! He's the purest essence of rock 'n roll we have going on now, IMO.

Yup, they are still bringin' it!  I was so happy to see Clarence looking good. I was really worried about him last year. One of the guys standing near us said Max Weinberg sometimes does not come due to Conan conflicts, but his son replaces him very well. Max was there this weekend though, and I'm sure he would not miss the last shows of the tour.

anyway, i know you will enjoy!
