I got nuthin today. But here are some good conversation starters - who do you read in the Media? Politics, sports, news, anything?

What do you watch? Sitcoms? Crimes shows? Political shows? Sports? Family Guy reruns?

Finally, what do you listen to?

Update - I just read this:

[University of Tennessee football coach Lane] Kiffin's insufferable nature at least has a purpose. Kiffin is the Sarah Palin of college football. He'll say anything to fire up his base. He does this with a wink, knowing it'll draw attention to the Volunteers.

That from a guy defending Kiffin. Oh boy.

Listen to: My wife, my kids

Example:

Many people ridiculed the 9/12 Tea Party as being so massively hyped and so poorly attended. I heard about on 9/12. Or Nate Silver being touted as some world famous dude. I know Silver from BP, not from 538. No one in my family (wife, in-laws, parents, etc.) has ever heard of him. I think the average person isn't as interested in politics as the average contributor to political sites and the difference is several orders of magnitude.

Actually, I think I am the only Gator fan here.

More Big Tenners than anything. But unlike Lane Kiffin, they are waiting for the Big Ten to actually DO something before popping off.

If you are saying that the comments are about things other than Florida, I cannot agree or disagree. I don't read the diary comments for those diaries you initiate by invoking the Gators. I see the term Florida or Gator and hit "next."
Honestly, I was riffing on your love of the Gators more than anything else. I haven't watched five minutes of college football since the year that three teams ended with undefeated records and only two played for the national championship. I won't watch college football again until A) there is a playoff, or B) my boys get old enough to take an interest.

Florida fans understandably adore Meyer, and why not? He's Bill Walsh. Still, having Meyer dominate the conference so thoroughly is actually bad for it. Meyer needs a foil that possesses the same public smart-ass-ness and brashness he does.

reading the usual political blog suspects and right now I am reading "Let The Right One In" by John Ajvide Lindqvist

watching movies movies movies since I dont watch network tv and I am eagerly waiting for the new season of Dexter (the best thing on tv) the end of this month.

an in reaction to the current crap my coworkers have been giving me to listen to (ok some of it is good) I have been on a retro Leonard Cohen binge.

only Richard Thompson recordings outnumber my Leonard Cohen recordings.

I only acquire a handful of CDs a year now. Same thing with DVDs. Only my comic book purchases have remained constant, and still modest.

I've found that it takes a certain level of investment of time and energy to stay current on pop culture. If you don't have that much time, it's easier to drop out altogether and go retro. No worries about missing the next game, the next episode or the next concert.

else here does. My RSS reader is filled to the brim.

In fiction, I can read an Alan Furst novel in one sitting without much effort; the stories are just so engrossing. I have a weakness for Bond and anything Peter Sellers. I grew up watching Star Trek (probably where I got my utopian vision for the world) but I have no time for Star Wars or George Lucas's lack of writing talent. Law and Order used to put me to sleep at 11PM when it was on A&E.

Music? I'm not going to answer that. . .

The voice cast of Family Guy was on Inside the Actors Studio last night. Except for the woman who voices Meg. She does NOT look anything like Meg.

More seriously, lately I have rediscovered the joy of newspaper reading (NYT on the Kindle). It is, for me, a more enjoyable experience than reading online. I think the form factor and the lack of distracting borders, ornaments, and ads make a big difference.

TL, FDL, Emptywheel, kos, TPM, RawStory, a couple news sites. In print, the daily fishwrap tabs.

I do prefer picking up a paper to reading online. But, my eyes are acting up and it's easier for me to read the screen than it is to read paper.

Listening? Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk (ARD), per the internet, thank you very much. Better news and a good selection of music.

Watching? Network over-the-air drivel ever since they cut off the cable. I've grown to like PBS American Experience - a lot.

Daily Media reading: TL obviously, Atrios, Salon, Daily Howler, various Apple sites, Engadget, James Wolcott, Digby, NYT iPhone app, Irvine Housing Blog...no RSS feeds though. tried that for a while and didn't like it for some reason. I think I just don't like to be reminded to read anything.

TV: Daily Show, Colbert Report, almost any HBO or Showtime series, Masterpiece Mystery, Survivor, Amazing Race, Damages, 30 Rock, Oscars, Emmys. Sports if the Bears are on or rare occasions when Cubs are in playoffs, or it's an Olympics year. More often an Olympic year then Cubs playoffs.

Books: history and biography, classics, Inspector Lynley mysteries, lots of other stuff

Listen to: Most of my listening is in the car, nothing at work - too distracting. I have XM radio and switch between the politics station, left talk radio, the Broadway station, and the Deep Tracks Album rock most frequently. At home I put iTunes on random and it pipes it to wireless speakers. Wide variety of music there, but heavy on the Springsteen, John Hiatt, Eric Clapton, and showtunes. go figure.

Watch: Reruns of Boston Legal, TCM, Project Runway (for creative designers problem-solving skills...amazing talent), Top Chef (I need a wife...or at least, a cook/housekeeper...OK, I'd settle for a cook); PBS/Lehrer Hour; tennis; Tiger golf; the Olympics; Ichiro/Junior; IFC.

Listen to: the wind, the gulls, the surf lapping at the shore, my neighbors quarreling outdoors, nostalgic music of the 40s,50s,60s,70s...mainly big bands/swing and jazz, The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkle, Ella, Mel Torme, Sinatra, Jack Jones...

was pretty poor use of the request sign phenomenon. Some people had great signs for some obscure songs, and he played them and had fun with it. Then you have the people who make a real nice sign for a concert staple like Born to Run or Thunder Road. Like he doesn't know we want to hear those!

Also, if you are in the GA Pit, bring a kid. That is your ticket to the foot of the stage. Next time I'm bringing my nephew instead of my sister.

New Haven police would not comment on the efforts there and continued to deny published reports that a suspect was in custody.

"You guys made up the fact that we had somebody in custody, the media in general," Avery told reporters outside the police department Tuesday. "We're talking to a lot of people."
Several news organizations have reported that police were interviewing a possible suspect who failed a polygraph test and has defensive wounds on his body. ABC News, WNBC-TV, The New Haven Register and the New Haven Independent cited anonymous sources in their reports. The Register and WNBC-TV identified the possible suspect as a lab technician.

This is the first time I remember the police calling out the media. I wish more people would call them out - especially when unverified "anonymous sources" are involved.

but that would be great... Sam Elliott played McGee back in '83 for a made for TV ... The Empty Copper Sea.. Rod Taylor did McGee in a 1970's Darker Than Amber...

I can't think of a single current "known" actor who could play McGee. Remember that McGee has a brooding self critical side that sometimes isn't all that pretty.. Maybe Tommy Lee Jones??
