Monday Night Open Thread: Obama on Letterman

David Letterman's show is getting more political. President Obama is the only guest tonight. Tomorrow night, Bill Clinton will be on.

Obama has a few jokes tonight. When Letterman asks him about Jimmy Carter's statement that racism is behind many of the attacks on him, Obama responds, "It's important to realize that I was actually black before the election."

On the serious side, Obama talks health care and war -- again. This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

conference that he does with the UN meeting? Usually when the UN meets, he blitzes the talk shows to promote his conference to get things done . . .

Is he still 'allowed' to do that?

I wasn't sure if that was still "allowed" when they put down the boundaries. I think it was the first year that I caught the broadcast and was totally sucked in.

He's in an interesting position on Larry. And handling it nicely.

His ability to walk a tightrope in commenting on Obama's efforts on HCR, Paterson, even North Korean, all kinds of stuff extemporarneously and without once putting his food in his mouth is just breathtaking.

I thought during the primaries it was established that the Clintons, themselves, were racists! How can they comment on it, then?

But, it's so logical. The subject of HCR is so much bigger than race.

The clip I've seen with O on Letterman go straight to "I was black before the election." Since it's out of context, I'm trusting Obama the surrounding comments are trying to say the same thing....it's about HCR and the economy. I won't be watching, though.

I'd be far more likely to just think the outburst against Obama was simply a symptom of the coarsening of our culture if I don't know the man behind the Tea Party protest hadn't gotten exposed on CNN for calling Obama an Indonesian Muslim, or if the guy who interrupted his speech wasn't a member of at the very least a "racially troubled" organization or a protege of the most influential American Racist since the Great Depression- but hey I might be wrong.

    I think you are wrong (5.00 / 1) (#18)

and Big Dog, as usual, has it right.  Sure, some of these people are racists, but they're also every other kind of bigot and sexist and homophobe, and super right-wing haters.  Bill and Hillary got attacked just as hard, actually harder.  Nobody's yet suggested, as far as I've heard, that Michelle actually murdered anybody or that Obama was running a drug-trafficking operation out of the Chicago suburbs.

    Yup.

And some like to point out the r*cism by saying that Obama only got 43% of the white vote nationally....to which I say, Kerry only got 41% of the white vote in 2004.  What does that say about his voters?

Also, on a lighter note -- or is it? -- I respond to a Washington Post op-ed with a feminist reading of Twilight.

In the mayor race in Boston.  Mumbles Menino is going for his fifth term.  There is a serious incumbency advantage in MA (look at the senate) for just about every elected office besides governer - where they never seem to want the job for that long.  For those of you who might remember, Menino, the current mayor, was the one who gave the incomprehensible speech during the Kennedy services.  The hardest job in the city goes to whoever has to transcribe this man's speeches.  This is the first time in 16 years he has faced much of a challenge as mayor.

you tell me.  This is the first I've heard about any of this.  The only thing I've heard about Swine flu is they are starting a database to figure out whether people in different neighborhoods have access to the shot.  FWIW - no one has tried to make me get a shot.

Sen. Byrd taken by ambulance (none / 0) (#23)
by MO Blue on Tue Sep 22, 2009 at 09:58:44 AM EST
Ambulances and fire trucks were dispatched to the Northern Virginia home of Sen. Robert Byrd Tuesday morning.
The reason for the emergency call was unclear, but a neighbor of the 91-year-old West Virginia Democrat said several ambulances were outside his residence in McLean, Va.

An officer at the McLean Fire Department said that a unit was dispatched at 9:10 to the address where Byrd lives, but he declined to comment on the substance of the response. link

Update on Sen. Byrd (none / 0) (#26)
by MO Blue on Tue Sep 22, 2009 at 10:50:26 AM EST
"Byrd apparently stood up too fast this morning in his home and fell down," said Jesse Jacobs, a spokesman for the senator. "To err on the side of caution his caregiver called an ambulance. He was taken to the hospital where he is currently being checked out. At this point in time there is no indication that he will be admitted."
