Sunday Night Open Thread

There's so much TV to watch tonight. Continued news coverage of Haiti, the Golden Globes, the premiere of "24 Season 8," a new Next Iron Chef, Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters.

Whether you are watching or just online, here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

Update: Looks like the House is gearing up to accept the Senate bill if they lose in MA Tuesday. [More...]

Over all, however, the bills are similar, if not identical, on a vast majority of issues. For supporters of the health care overhaul, the complaints with the Senate bill may seem minor compared with the prospect of outright defeat of the legislation, the president’s top domestic initiative, and the thought of Republicans’ using a health care failure to clobber Democrats in this fall’s midterm elections.

why they are saying that the bills are similar because they really aren't in two major areas: one being the public options though limited it is and the other being the financing mechanism. There is no excise tax in the house bill.

So the MA senate race is a referendum on Obama's health care bill which would mean even a blue state like MA doesnt want it if Coakley loses but the house is going to go ahead and pass a bill that cost the party a senate seat? Man, this is beyond stupid.

With all the messages coming out, it sounds like Brown is going to win the seat.

    Debacle (5.00 / 3) (#12)
by ruffian on Sun Jan 17, 2010 at 09:00:18 PM EST
so, let me get this straight....Kennedy dying results in the House having to accept the Senate bill...because HCR was largely responsible for Kennedy's seat going GOP.  All the while, if they had used Kennedy's HELP committee Senate Bill and not doen the whole Baucus mess, perhaps the whole thing would have been done a lot faster with a better result for everyone.

    Truly an astonishing story.

by Ga6thDem on Sun Jan 17, 2010 at 09:42:00 PM EST
current bill get much less "progressive" what ever progessive means. I can understand that concern with the house bill but the senate crap bill is a republican bill for the most part. The excise tax is something that John McCain proposed doing in 2008. If you look at Brown's website (which I glanced at) he says that the subsidies should be cut in MA so that's proably what would be in another bill. The bottom line is that I guess the bill would be made even worse by simply just mandating that people hand over money to the insurance companies. It's a GOP wet dream.

In 2004, Mass Citizens for Life refused to endorse Brown because of his support for Roe v. Wade. And less than two weeks ago, Brown declared during a debate hosted by WTKK-FM, that while he was "against partial-birth abortions" and for "a strong parental notification law," he continued to believe that "Roe v. I loved this nearby story at UPI:

TARANTO, Italy, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Police ... said a 4-year-old boy who considered himself too old for his pacifiers called authorities to surrender the baby toys. ... [T]he boy called the emergency line a few days before his birthday and explained that he thought the police should have his old pacifiers, ANSA reported Thursday.

"I'm old enough now so you can have my dummies," the boy told the operator.

Police said two officers visited the boy's birthday party and traded him a souvenir hat in exchange for his four old pacifiers.

I think it's because of my allegiance to what I consider a far better intelligence-terrorism show, Britain's "Spooks," known over here as "MI-5." It's got better pacing, more finely drawn characters, much more dastardly interplay and mind games between intelligence vs. Parliament, and the scenarios are plotted out so interestingly. And, it even seems more realistic. Of course, "24" often seems like a predictable cartoon...

Every year since 1986 Cubs fans have gathered in the dark  dreariness of mid-winter to throw off the grief of last season (every last season), and pump up their hopes and dreams for the new season, the one that will surely be better than last year.

    Good news for this year:

New owners. The Ricketts family bought the team from the evil doers at the the Tribune Corp. A special pox on any house associated with Sam Zell.

Wrigley Field will remain Wrigley Field. The new owners have promised to not sell the stadium naming rights.

Milton Bradley is gone. He has been traded to the Mariners (too bad, Seattle) which will, at the very least, improve the attitude in the locker room and on the field.

And the best thing of all--- It's a whole new season and anything is possible. GO CUBS!!!!

a Tennessee linebacker recruit gave a verbal commitment to Florida today. I really didn't think the Gators needed any more defensive signees.

linebackers is offensive lineman. And of course a new field goal kicker though our recruit seems pretty firm still with the great kid from Florida (even though I think he went to visit Miami this weekend).

Off to read the Kiffin post. I hope BTD doesn't disappoint me. I know he thought he was beneath UT.

He told me that his attention grabbing mouth was the equivalent of acting like Tennessee is Rutgers. We didn't need a coach to get us in the news because we have a great tradition here and kids in the south already know that.

He's a great recruiter but I have no doubt he would have had us on probation before long if he hasn't already done something to get us there.

is still interested in the Vols and looks to be a strong legged kicker that I thought the Gators might pursue after the Kiffin ordeal. The Gators had two players from his high school on their roster this year. Even though the high school is closer to Miami's backyard, they only have one from the school. You still look safe with keeping him in Knoxville.

hasn't been very good since his freshman year. He had pulled a quad muscle that was already messed up in pre-game against Bama and didn't tell anyone except one trainer. I hope the trainer leaves with LK.

territory.  Even a win that close for Coakley could scare the heck out of other members of Congress up for re-election, and whether that would have impact on the corporate health insurance bailout could be a question.

Btw, does Silver factor in the weather forecast?

highly mathematical based on his sabermetric baseball knowledge I believe. Have never seen weather mentioned. Weather doesn't effect the outcome in baseball. Unlike elections, baseball gets postponed.

and not weather or anything else may actually have as much or more to do with Tuesday's outcome than most realize.

True enough, the sudden weekend plummet of Coakley in the the land of The Sawx may not be due to healthcare, jobs, Obama, recessions, curling irons or waterboarding, but rather a little baseball exchange during a radio interview on Friday when she referred to Curt Schilling, supporter of her Republican opponent, Scott Brown, as "another Yankee fan".

In the Church of Red Sox Baseball, Martha Coakley may have committed an excommunicable act.
