Saturday College Football Open Thread

The Big Ten had a banner day yesterday (for the Big Ten -- these things are relative - the Big Ten went 2-1. The SEC had a disappointing day - they also went 2-1.) Can Sparty keep it going today? They have the turmoil at Texas Tech in their favor. Tech fired coach Mike Leach this week amid charges of player abuse - charges Leach hotly denies. In any event, they play a game today. And Tech is an 8 point favorite over Michigan State. I like Sparty (-8).

Ole Miss, Arkansas and South Carolina carry the SEC banner today. I like Ark (-8) over East Carolina, Ole Miss (-3) over Oklahoma State and South Carolina (-3.5) over Connecticut. In the other game today, I'll take Northern Illinois (+7) over South Florida.

This is an Open Thread.

What a roster of nothing games - aside from the ALAMO BOWL of course.  Go State!

This is a strange new development in the bowls (none / 0) (#2)

The post New Years Day bowl games before the national championship game.

I do not know how they are supposed to be appealing television or spectator events.

In essence, I think folks still have the mindset of the season ending on New Years Day except for the national championship game.

On the other hand, if yesterday was a playoff day and next week had 2 semifinal matchups and the national championship game were in 2 weeks, these bowl games might spark some interest.

it has something to do with today being Saturday. Wouldn't want to waste that whole day on just one game.

I've never been a fan of this new system where we stretch it out for days and days in advance of the championship game. I have less interest in the "undercard" than I did under the old system.

MSU is missing 8 starters and 6 other players that have been suspended due to a campus brawl and academic issues.

Neither team is exactly coming in without distractions.

It's 3 starters.  Two good wide receivers and a decent cover corner.

Additionally a significant back-up running back was suspended; the only 'big' running back State had left on the roster.

Five of the Rather Hall incident players are wide receivers.  Although the other 3 were lightly used there are no scholarship WRs to replace the 2 suspended starters.

Also suspended AND kicked off the team was a safety, returning after an early season injury, who would have seen considerable time in the Alamo Bowl.

A few of the other Rather Hall gang players were back-ups that had seen playing time in 5 to 9 games during the season.

In an incident not related to Rather Hall another lightly used WR was suspended.

That's 3 starters and probably four or five back-up players lost.

Academics were NOT involved in any of the suspensions.

If I had my choice between losing a number of players and losing a head coach for one game I'd lose the head coach. Texas Tech still has its offensive and defensive coordinators and the people on the field who actually make the plays.

    receivers and Texas Tech's DBs.

He has only two scholarship WRs to throw to plus some good tight ends.

But, something can certainly be made of that.

Right now my expectations are low, praying that it will not be an embarassing blow out and I had that concern before the suspensions.

One of Joshua's friends brought him a Christmas present right before we left for Charleston.  He opened, it was a Lego Halo Warrior that stands about 12 inches tall when put together.  He scattered everything all over the coffee table and put the feet together before we left.  And there it has sat, because he got other presents.  I threatened and I threatened and I threatened, put the thing together or put it back in its box or I'm throwing it away.  I had the trashcan in one hand and a handful of pieces in the other and I choked.  Then I sat down and put the thing together with waste not want not running through my head.

    I'm just struck by the fact (5.00 / 1) (#10)

that it was the feet he put together first.  Maybe because that's the best place to start?  [shrugs]

I had girl children, so I only know about the pink and white and lavender Legos...  :-)

Oh seriously now... please. I said Nebraska by 21. And even I underestimated the outcome. Could JP be serious? Could he be reaching for the TO crown? Stay tuned ladies and gentlemen for next year's exciting continuation of... the return of NEBRASKA.
