Sunday Open Thread

Crime news has been slow this week but should pick up tomorrow when the courts reopen, and I'll be getting back to those issues.

For those of you with things besides Yemen and AQAP on your mind, here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

A nice story about law students (none / 0) (#1)

Against big, bad debt collectors (aka "The Evil Empire")

Dealing with a debt collector can be an unsettling experience. But dealing with one in court can be downright scary, especially if you don't have a lawyer.

But the University of Detroit Mercy Law School has created a program in 29th District Court in Wayne to make court friendlier -- and fairer -- for defendants in debt collection cases.

The school recently started a Consumer Defense Clinic that offers defendants legal assistance for free in selected cases at the court, where nearly 11% of the 14,475 cases last year involved debt collection.

The program gives second- and third-year law students real courtroom experience. The school hopes to use the program in other district courts.

"The defendants get access to justice rather than being steamrolled by it," said Ian Lyngklip, a prominent Southfield consumer lawyer who runs the program. "You really need a lawyer if you're going to effectively defend yourself against a debt collector."

Lyngklip, who teaches consumer law at the school, said he asked the university to create the program after Wayne District Judge Laura Mack expressed concern about a large number of defendants who were appearing in debt collection cases without lawyers. She was concerned that many of them didn't owe the debt or owed less than the collector alleged.

But, as a judge, Mack can't provide legal assistance or favor one side.

Lyngklip's students have won dismissals on 90% of their cases and racked up another win Dec. 2 by persuading Mack to dismiss a suit against Nicole Moten, 40, of Wayne.

by Rosemary Mahoney, one of my fave authors.  Non-fiction account of her rowing a small fishing boat from Luxor to Qena.  Lots of discussion of writings by others about being on the Nile, including Flaubert and Nightingale.

Re Nerval: not that I recall. (none / 0) (#4)

She includes discussion of the search for origins of the Nile and various theories subsequently proven incorrect.  I have read the Moorehead books. Fascinating.

The White Nile and The Blue Nile was being transported myself. Magical tho real.  In another very recent episode of being transported (in a quicker and rather more fleeting way): Invictus. Perhaps, I was just in the right mood for a reflection on that time and on Mandela's courage, leadership. Unabashadedly, I loved it...felt like crying in joy.

    Lou Dobbs email (none / 0) (#10)
by gyrfalcon on Sun Jan 03, 2010 at 06:34:34 PM EST
I was suprised and frankly PO'd to get an unsolicited email from Lou Dobbs the other day, touting his new Web site, etc.  I sure never signed up for any such thing, nor emailed him or his show ever.  The only thing I can think of is that CNN gave him their email list, which seems like quite a breach of trust.

Anybody else get the Dobbs email?  If so, have you ever signed up for CNN news alerts or the like?
