Saturday College Football Open Thread

7-7 last week. 49-52-1 on the season. Yanks out. Gators in tatters. But today begins a new run. Let's start with the Missouri Tigers playing at home against BCS #1 Oklahoma. I like the Tigers (+4) at home. I've now watched 3 Oklahoma games and 2 Mizzou games. Oklahoma is not that good and Mizzou is better than I thought. The emotion of playing at home can carry them through.

I've become a believer in Auburn. I think they are going to win the SEC. And it starts by giving LSU a beatdown today at home. I love Auburn (-6) in this game. A 10 unit play. More . . .

Georgia has woken up. And I think they win the rest of their games and maybe, the SEC East. The Dawgs (-4) over Kentucky. A 5 unit play.

Iowa has it going now and Kirk Ferentz never lets up the accelerator. I like Iowa (-6) over a Wisconsin team that had everything go right last week at home in the big upset over Ohio State.

In other games, I like Bama (-17) over Tennessee, Notre Dame (-7) over Navy, Minnesota (+10) over Penn State (a reflection on Penn State), Mich St. (-6) over Northwestern (I believe in the Spartans this year), Indiana (+14) over Illinois (Zook should never be a 14 point fav over anybody), Ole Miss (+10) over Arkansas, Wyoming (+11) over BYU, Okla State (+6) over Nerbaska (the wheels start to come off the Huskers now), Texas Tech (-3) over Colorado, South Carolina (-12) over Vandy, and Washington (+7) over Arizona.

Yes, mostly because I am an Oregon Ducks fan, but I do have a soft spot for the Tigers. They are the only team in their conference I do not actively dislike.

So, Go, Tigers! Win one for the Ducks.

remember whether Columbia is the capital of MO, or whether that's Jefferson City, and whether in Columbia they pronounce it Missour-ee or Missour-uh.

Strange kinda divided state that can't even come together on pronouncing the state name, let alone come together on politics.

That said, I'll easily root for the Purple state MO Tigers tonight over solidly Red from OK Sooners.

Great win over the Sooners 36-27. And your win knocks Oklahoma out of the # 1 spot.

Oregon Ducks, currently # 1 in the human polls, should now move up to No. 1 in the BCS also.

Let's hope the Ducks can hang on to the top spot.

It was a very weird feeling rooting for Texas.  Then again, if Osama Bin Laden had a baseball team I'd probably root for them against the Yankees...  And the A-Roid strike-out was pretty great.

I am interested in your opinion on Pete Rose.

Specifically - it seems he is barred from baseball and consideration from the hall of fame on the grounds that he bet on baseball games.

It seems to me that the only dishonorable thing would have been if he had bet on his team to lose and then went about flubbing the game in order to collect. From what I have read, he has not been accused of that. If he bet on his team to win, and then went about doing everything he could to see that they did in fact win, I can't find any fault with him.

Your thoughts on this would be welcome.

    Not that you asked me. (5.00 / 0) (#8)

IMO, a manager betting on his own team, even betting on his own team to win, is extremely problematic.  He could, for instance, burn his bullpen when he ordinarily would not, compromising future games.  Or use a player he knew to be injured in a desperate attempt to cash a bet.

Baseball will forgive many sins, but a person associated with the game betting on the sport is not one of them.  The Hall of Fame is of course a different entity from Major League Baseball and could induct him on their own, but their rules explicitly state that anyone banned from the game is ineligible from consideration.

    Parent

    Good points, Tony. (5.00 / 1) (#23)

Baseball can forgive a lot of low-life activity off the field, and has basically accepted that players will use whatever performance-enhancing substances and devices -- from greenies to steroids, a pitcher cutting the ball or applying saliva or vaseline to it, a hitter fooling with too much pine tar or using cork -- in order to gain an advantage or, as he might see it, keep up with the Joneses.

Betting on the game, however, is a whole nother kettle of fish, and traditionally the people who run the game tend to draw the line firmly on that one.  The Black Sox Scandal of 1919 made a huge mark on the game, and with all the books and movies that deal with it, it's never been forgotten.

Pete Rosé might make himself eligible with a genuine and sincere turnaround in his attitude towards gambling and betting on baseball.  But last I checked, he's still out there playing the ponies, and still insinuating that betting is okay so long as you're betting on your team to win.

Of course, with the barely semi-principled Bud Selig still running things, and with the embarrassment of the Steroid Era happening on his watch, he might think re-instating PR and making him eligible will help remove some of the remaining stigma of the PED Era players getting into the HoF, or sort of put all these controversies to bed with one "magnanimous" stroke.  I suspect PR will be made eligible on Selig's watch; just a question of when.

One thing that drives us Hawk fans crazy about Coach Kirk is that when we get a lead, he does let off the accelerator--the offense gets more conservative in an effort to let the air out of the clock.

Sure it helps to have one of the best defenses in the country to rely on, but giving the ball to A-Rob (our only healthy RB with experience) 30+ times a game is a worry.

You can take the Coach out of the NFL, but you can't take the NFL out of the Coach.  I blame Belichick.

    That being said--Go Hawks!

Darkness on the Edge of Town. kdog was asking about it a few weeks ago and I finally got around to watching it last night. I loved the old footage of the band rehearsing and recording the record. It really showed the craft of making a record. The Boss really was the boss and had an idea in his head of what he wanted to achieve, and worked until he got it. That is my favorite of his records, so I appreciate the work that went in to it.

The interviews confirmed the themes that so resonated with me when I first got into Springsteen in my mid-20's - a little late to the game. This record had been out 5 yrs or so before I discovered it. But as it happens I was about the same age Bruce was when he recorded it, and he was dealing with the themes of becoming an adult in the world, and how you deal with the new feelings and frustrations that can bring. This was the early 80s for me, during the last so-called 'economic recovery'. Like so many now, I was underemployed and wondering if I would ever have the life I wanted (in a lot of ways I still do). It took a lot of love and faith in life to see me through, and I got some of it from this record. I highly recommend 'The Promised Land' and 'Badlands' to young people going through that now. They truly helped my sister and I, and we are Bruce fanatics 25 years later.

I think the doc captures a lot of that, plus the joys of being in a band and making music.
