Wednesday Open Thread

With a $50,000.00 contribution from Larry Zimmer, CEO of Men's Wearhouse, proponents of Prop 19 have been able to air the above ad, featuring former San Jose Police Chief Joseph McNamara , who explains why he, and other law enforcement officers in California, will be voting Yes on Prop 19.

George Soros has donated $1 million for a final GOTV effort and ad campaign. More at the Atlantic.

Firedoglake says the latest poll numbers show a drop in support for Prop 19. They really need to get young voters to turn out and vote.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

    funny:

. . . an even better rumor: supposedly Disney is thinking of cutting Keith Richards from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides because gasp! he used drugs.

I feel for Disney, the human riff hid his drug use so well, how could they have known prior to the release of Keith's new biography?  He's a sneaky bastard that Richards:)

Looks like a winner judging from the excerpts printed in Rolling Stone Magazine btw...loved the story of setting the Playboy mansion bathroom on fire partying with Bobby Keys...classic!

Any Mention of Tax Rates ? (none / 0) (#2)

Will it be like alcohol, taxed per amount, or taxed like normal goods, determined by cost ?

I never thought I would see this in my lifetime.  Even if it fails, this will happen in my lifetime, which is crazy considering all the talk of this country moving right.

Speaking of WOD, Mexico's pres is telling Americans to lay off the dope to quell the violence down south...and in the same breath defends prohibition and rags on Prop 19...add Calderon to the list of clueless world leaders if you have not already done so...its the prohibition stupid!

As the clock ticks down to the midterms and the White House tries to rally the base, President Obama this afternoon is meeting with five popular progressive bloggers.
They are pictured, from left to right: Joe Sudbay of AMERICABlog, Barbara Morrill (aka BarbinMD) from DailyKos, John Amato from Crooks & Liars, Oliver Willis from OliverWillis.com, and Duncan Black aka "Atrios" from eschatonblog.
According to Sudbay -- who also writes for AMERICAblog Gay and is thus the first member of the gay media to meet with President Obama since he took office -- the meeting is scheduled to last 45 minutes, and will be followed by 15 minutes with White House senior adviser David Axelrod.

to think she may be a "progressive" troll, working undercover to discredit the tea party, by constantly blurting out inanities in public. either that, or she really is just not very bright.

of course, if you consider her normal audiences, not being very bright turns out to be an advantage: they can easily relate to her.

Interesting political ad on radio (none / 0) (#16)
by caseyOR on Wed Oct 27, 2010 at 06:41:44 PM EST
I was just in the car, running errands, and I heard a new political radio ad. This is the first time I've come across an ad like this.

Two voices, one male and one female, speaking with the inflections and syntax that suggest they are African American. They are attacking the Tea Party and supporting Obama. The script is chock full of racist buzzwords. They talk about claims that the First Lady is uppity; references to the President as a boy; things in that vein.

They close with remarks about how the Tea Party wants to take their country back, and they then state that the TPers can't have it back and they, the speakers, have Obama's back and so should everyone else.

Not a word about the issues. Nothing on jobs, health care, the wars. Just exhorting people, they do seem to be targeting AAs, to protect this President.

Paid for by one of those blandly named, D.C. headquartered organizations that no one ever heard of before.

I do wonder why it is airing in Oregon, a state with a miniscule AA community.

Yes, it was on a station that (none / 0) (#18)
by caseyOR on Wed Oct 27, 2010 at 10:37:04 PM EST
is heard throughout a large swath of the Willamette Valley as well as SW Washington. And, yes, Oregon's AA population is concentrated in the Portland area, but it is still a very small community.

None of the members of our Congressional delegation seems to be in danger of losing reelection. My only thought is that it was aimed more at SW Washington. Patty Murray is in a tight race with Dino Rossi, trying to hang on to her Senate seat. Both Obamas have been to Washington to campaign for Patty.

The ad did not mention the name of any current candidate, just talked about the President.

well-spent, so I suggest to you that it's designed to appeal to Democrats and liberals as well as for African-Americans.

If the radio station was AM, you might be surprised at what distance the signal was still intelligible when compared to FM.
