Travel Alert Issued for Europe

The State Department has issued a terror travel alert for Americans in Europe. It represents less of a threat than a "travel warning."

The United States travel alert does not discourage Americans from visiting Europe, a step American officials rejected in part because of concerns about the impact on tourism and student travel. A “travel alert” of the kind issued Sunday is considered to be far less disruptive than a “travel warning” that would advise Americans to stay away from certain high-threat areas.

Paris and Berlin seem to be the targets.

    Amping up the fear quotient just in time for the election.  I wonder how long it will be until we go to Orange Alert.  Not that we ever went below ... yellow.

    ...but the Christmas markets draw a good number of American tourists.  Lots of organized tours (Tauck, GET and the like) out there specifically for the markets...

    Not sure why this would help democrats... but Obama hate is strong so why not.

    If you want to get into conspiracy sh*t, I would say the terror alert has more to do with keeping up the Afghanistan war effort, than elections.

    loyal opposition every time the previous administration issued a terror alert it was to affect an election or cover something up. What is Obama trying to hide?

    Maybe he's positioning himself as tough on terror or possibly he's trying to justify incinerating Pakistani civilians with his drones.

    I suppose it could just be a don't change horses in the middle of the stream when we're at war thing.

    Yes, alerts and fearmongering make voters pull the lever for GOP.

    Tried and true formula.

    This is about keeping up support for the war, imo.

    that the agenda of the national security establishment (i.e., those who make these warnings decisions) might not be consonant with the Democrats winning elections but rather be more inclined to want Republicans to win?

    I'd put money on that.

    when word went out (mainly in non-U.S. media, we noted) of attacks said to have been averted.

    Now, the alert is only for travel elsewhere.  It would seems to be a disconnect, and media ought to be reading what was written (including by some of them) a week ago and asking more -- such as whether it turns out that word a week ago now has been deemed incorrect, and the U.S. now is not a target?

    Japan issued a travel alert for Europe on Monday, joining the United States and Britain in warning of a possible terrorist attack by al-Qaida or other groups, but tourists appeared to be taking the mounting warnings in stride. AP

    these warnings. Maybe it's foolish of me but: fool me once, etc. There's always a reason the Powers that Be want to stir up the fear pot, and I refuse to fall for it. YMMV.
