The oldsters continue to lose at Survivor. I hope they send Jimmy T. home, he's such a loser. Looks like it might be Danny instead.

    Kudos to Roy Halliday, (5.00 / 3) (#1)

    who pitched a no-hitter for the Phillies against the Reds in the opening game of their National League Division Series.

    This was Halliday's first post-season game in a 13-year career.

    Halliday won 21 games this year, leading the National League in wins, complete games (9) and innings pitched, and coming in second in strikeouts, third in Earned Run Average.  He threw a perfect game against Florida earlier this season.  

    In today's game, he faced one batter more than the minimum, walking one in the middle innings.  Only three other pitchers have thrown two no-hitters in one season;  the most recent was Nolan Ryan over 30 years ago.  This was also only the second no-hitter in post-season play in all of baseball history, the other being Yankee Don Larsen's perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1956 World Series.

    There were four other pitchers who pitched two no-hitters in the same season, not three.  They were
    Nolan Ryan (Angels), 1973
    Allie Reynolds (Yankees), 1951
    Johnny VanDerMeer (Reds), 1938
    and the immortal Virgil Trucks (Tigers), 1952.

    My apologies for having forgotten Mr. Trucks.  He went 5-19 in 1952, but 2 of those wins were no-hitters.  Go figure.

    VanDerMeer is the only pitcher to have thrown no-hitters in consecutive games he pitched.

    I didn't get to see all of it, only a few of the middle innings, but the crowd was so loud, then a Reds pitcher throwing an airball to first-- amazing.

    I love baseball. Spring Training to the World Series, Free Agent Season, the hot stove league... I do love it so.

    In contrast to the 'unintended consequences' theory of electing Obama....

    McDonald's and 29 other company got waivers for health insurance.  Ha!

    What does that mean?  The schmucks get to pay more money for less coverage, the insurance company gets to continue it's huge profit margin and a generous ability to deny payment.
