Friday Open Thread

I'd love to be online shopping today, but instead I'll be at the car dealership getting a side mirror that shattered on Wednesday replaced ($600, unbelievable) and then the jail.

On the plus side, I finally installed my new wireless extreme N dual band router (to go with my new 3.0 cable modem) and my internet shot up to over 20 mbps. I also installed a gizmo to make my blu-ray player wireless instead of ethernet without the player having to be near the ethernet connection. It plugs into a regular power outlet. Netflix streams just as fast as it did with the ethernet. Now I don't have to upgrade my bluray player from wireless capable to full wireless. Here's the router, the modem and the gizmo. (Note, you might find them cheaper elsewhere.)

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

    WOW (5.00 / 1) (#1)
by befuddledvoter on Fri Nov 26, 2010 at 03:18:17 PM EST
I have no idea what all this stuff is anymore.  I stopped trying to keep up with electronics.  I watch young people sitting opposite me on the subway, heads glaring downward; hands craddling a little gizmo with fingers moving a mile a minute.  Suddenly, it occurred to me - I could be murdered right in front of them and they would not even be able to describe what happened.  Somehow, this virtual social activity has taken the place of real dialogue.

Aside from this, I love the idea of Netflix streaming since I still get mine delivered in the mail.  Hmmmmmm.  Am I dating myself?  My birthday was yesterday and I am feeling a bit older.

casing that held it? Because a few weeks ago the glass on my mirror broke and I had it replaced for something like 20 dollars.

the casing got a big hole in th backt. Don't know what happened, I was driving and heard a really loud bang like a gunshot, looked over and my mirror was shattered. Either a rock flew into it or it just exploded, I have no idea. It has heating elements and wires in it and they had to replace the whole thing. $420 for the mirror unit, the rest was labor and a "hazardous waste" charge of $18, even though I had them give me the broken one so I can get it to my insurance company.

sources is Yves Smith's blog Naked Capitalism. Yves and her contributors have been on top of the financial mess in all its manifestations for some time now. I read her every single day now. It is the only info source I have any trust in.

She has been doing yeoman's work on the mortgage fraud. Check the archives for previous posts.

I drive a minivan I have had for over 10 years because I haul a lot of equipment around sometimes, and I found that the minivan is the best compromise between a truck/(true van) and a car.

Anyway, the power window on the driver side went out last winter, and it wouldn't close, and it cost $600 to fix/replace at the dealer.  I was getting kind of chilly for a while.

You might get a sun tan with all that wireless that is radiating through the air while you watch your reality programming.

Personally I have taken to downloading all the TV Science Fiction Series that I have missed over the years from Canada, Britain and the US because I work so much, and putting the shows on USB2 flash-drives and plugging them into my new Panasonic DVR.  Now I can watch them in order and anytime I want.

at Walmart checking out a Black Friday Special, that the Blu Ray movies on DVDs in the Redbox machine cost more than the regular DVDs.

They cost $1.50 while the normal DVDs are $1.00.

if you prefer blu-ray also. I guess it makes sense since the blu-ray movies are more expensive to buy, but it still feels a bit like being nickle and dimed to death.

    if you're only getting 20mbs d/l, (none / 0) (#14)

something is wrong with your router. i have the same extreme, duel-band pci card, and i get, at minimum, 30mbs d/l. i am in the process of upgrading my board, cpu and RAM, to support 64bit, with W7 ultimate, and hope to jack it up even higher.

something about having lexis/nexis pop up instantly on my screen just sends a cheap shiver down my leg! :)
