Saturday Night Open Thread: Kid Rock

Detroit has a new ambassador, Kid Rock. He's had a great year. GQ has named him Rock Star of the Year. Yesterday, his Jan. 15 show in Detroit (to celebrate his 40th birthday) sold out in 19 minutes.

He's also doing good things. His Kid Rock Foundation purchased 1,000 Thanksgiving meals for the Detroit needy this year. Here's more of his good deeds. [More....]

Here's one of my favorites, from the 2008 Fashion Rocks awards:

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

    Thomas Friedman is irrelevant other (5.00 / 0) (#17)
by KeysDan on Sun Nov 28, 2010 at 12:45:07 PM EST
than for the report that he is one of the "opinion-makers" that President Obama reads.  So, maybe this is a worry (NYT Sunday op-ed): Tom is concerned that we are "slipping" as a country; people, he believes, are not concerned by the national debt as much as they want "nation-building".

As a part of this rebuilding and refurbishment is a need to cut Medicare and Social Security entitlements at the same time as we make new  investments in schools and government-financed research programs that will spawn the next Google and Intel. He believes we need to cut payroll (social security) taxes and corporate taxes and raise gasoline and carbon taxes.

Friedman units are still in play as Friedman is still touting his un-reconstructed Iraq war cheerleading, albeit reduced to "completing our work in Iraq which still has the potential to be a long-range game changer in the Arab-Muslim world."

Iraq is, to him,  the smart war and Afghanistan is the dumb war (Obama will not like that part).  Tom believes that the best thing the President can do about all this is to declare his support for the draft recommendations on how to reduce the country's budget deficit just laid out by Obama's Catfood Commission by Bowles and Simpson (by the way, laid out while the president was out of the country and before the Commission voted on it).   It is great, Tom says, because everybody takes a hit.  This column is worthy of another Friedman Pie-in-the-Face Award.

since he is a Republican, but he backed Obama. I don't care about his politics since he doesn't broadcast his views, I just like his music and his attitude.

    in 2008:

"I truly believe that people like myself, who are in a position of entertainers in the limelight, should keep their mouth shut on politics," the rap-rock musician, 37, tells CMT Insider.

"Because at the end of the day," he goes on to say, "I'm good at writing songs and singing. What I'm not educated in is the field of political science. And so for me to be sharing my views and influencing people of who I think they should be voting for ... I think would be very irresponsible on my part."

and is uninformed, then he's right, and good for him for knowing when to keep his mouth shut. But i'm glad there are others who do make it an active interest and share their views. You don't give up that right just because you become an entertainer.

We are all going through hard economic times. The New York Times has a column about some economic fix-it ideas that can help us come out better as a nation.
The article also has a link to the community-wealth.org website. It is worth a visit.

'"In the interview with The New York Times, Pelosi wouldn't admit to having deep emotions about the setback for her party in the election.

"I have deep emotions about the American people," she said. "If I were to cry for anything, I would cry for them and the policies that they're about to face." "

I think she will be providing the straight talk in the next couple of years.

You guys think the border patrol just start filling out arrest paperwork when they see Willie's tour bus approaching?

I'm thinkin Willie ought to have diplomatic immunity. Give him a diplomatic pouch with the United States seal to carry his stash.

Hell, I'd give him a seat at the UN with a full vote on the security council after the way he brought the rednecks and hippies of Texas into a state of mutual respect if not downright affection armed with nothing but his soft spoken drawl.
