Saturday Morning Open Thread

Did I miss anything?

Today being Saturday, a few words about the resignation of Florida football coach Urban Meyer - he had a Leahyesque 5 year run unmatched in recent college football history (2 national championships, 3 BCS bowl game wins, 85% winning percentage in the toughest college football conference.) He was a great, great football coach. That said, he clearly was not at his best last year. It seems that Meyer can only work at full throttle. That leads to burnout. It was time for him to step down.

So who replaces him? I think Florida AD Jeremy Foley will settle on Dan Mullen, the former Gator offensive coordinator and current Mississippi State coach. I think if he could fulfill his own wish list, Oklahoma coach Bobby Stoops would be the next Gator coach. That's who I would want as well. Behind Stoops, I think Jon Gruden would do a tremendous job (but he is hanging out for the right NFL spot). I am also intrigued by Jim Harbaugh. I also think it would be intriguing to see what Kirk Ferentz could do at Florida. He's a great coach. Finally, while I think Boise's Chris Peterson is a great coach, I'm not sure he fits Southern college football. If he finds that Boise is not a big enough stage for him, I suspect he would go to the Pac 10, not the SEC.

Open Thread.

but not sure what your link has to do w/the subject of King's column

in that column King does 2 things that make him an idjut, imo

    1. he reels off the standard apologist list of Awebama's [non]accomplishments

    2. he essentially says Dems are stuck w/Obama in 2012 because Obama is black - which even if King thinks is true, & even if it is true, is one awesomely stupid thing to come right out & say

that is point 2 in my previous comment

your link reports on self-described AA conservatives leaving the Democratic Party apparently for reasons of policy

my link to King's column shows King saying exactly what you just quoted (talk about hostages!) - that any primary challenge to Obama will cause the AA vote to bolt, & King makes no mention whatsoever of policy (except to smack "the left") but only of the fact that Obama is the first AA president - which is to say that we are stuck w/Obama because he is black - a stupid argument for King to make on behalf of his love object

so again i don't see the connection between that & your link - maybe you can enlighten me

    Just an example (none / 0) (#34)
by jbindc on Sat Dec 11, 2010 at 02:19:42 PM EST
Of how active members of the Democratic Party - i.e. both past presidents of the state College Democrats and one an elected official - and both African American - decided to leave the Democratic Party.

These were not just some random people who voted occassionally and were polled.

And since King's point was that AA's will leave the party if Obama is primaried, my point, which should be obvious, is that some have decided to already leave.  I realize 2 is a minute number, but to "threaten" that AA's will leave the party looks stupid, since they could be trickling out already - much like many whites are too.

by The Addams Family on Sat Dec 11, 2010 at 02:42:02 PM EST
sometimes i too think my points are obvious when in fact they are anything but

anyway you are saying that Colbert King's "not a threat but a promise" is itself stoopid since AA's are already trickling out of the party (in the case of these two, because they are conservatives, not because of the prospect of a primary threat to Obama)

& i am saying that King's stated reason for his "not a threat but a promise" is a piece of stoopidity with its own zip code

so yeah, King is stoopid on 2 counts -  but i think the stoopid i cited burns more

There will be more added to the long line of people who have already left the party because they feel the party left them.

It's hard to picture Obama/Biden as inspiring many to register to vote, to change parties or to join the kind of GOTV effort Obama put together in 2008.

BTD, but I don't envision a jump from offensive coordinator to the top job at Florida... Florida and Mullen are the 'peas and carrots' solution.

I don't think too many MSU fans will be rabidly angered if Mullen returns to the site of his successes, either.

I've also heard Petrino, who probably hasn't finished unpacking at Arkansas yet. But Petrino is a merc head coach... always looking for the better deal.

...and not the big media outfits that hire them to sue anyone and everyone they can as part of an ongoing harassment campaign?

Denver Post management has taken aim over the past year at the internet, apparently sweeping the web routinely for Denver Post content and threatening litigation if it finds unlicensed material floating free of the Denver Post brand. It sent a letter to popular blogsite ColoradoPols this past summer sounding Orwellian warnings against quoting even the smallest amount of material from the paper. The Post has now sued the national conservative politics Drudge Report for running a Denver Post photo. The Las Vegas company suing on behalf of the Post is asking for $150,000 and for Matt Drudge to surrender his popular website domain names drudgereport.com and drudgereportarchives.com.

As you might imagine, there's plenty more over at ColoradoPols.

Clearly the Post is fighting for their very survival, but the way they are going about it seems to be a classic case of cutting off their nose to spite their face.  We're not allowed to even mention the Post at CoPols, which means less page views for them, which means lower ad rates which leads to lower revenue...

Copyright enforcement company Righthaven is going after its biggest target yet--widely read news aggregator The Drudge Report. Righthaven is suing over a photograph The Drudge Report posted that originally was published in the Denver Post. That newspaper is owned by the MediaNews Group, which Righthaven started working with earlier this month.

I think that it's very possible that over the next year, a lot of "free-for-the-taking" internet assumptions are going to be noticably squeeezed out as the taming of the wild west web continues.

STOCKHOLM -- A car explosion and what appeared to be a suicide attack injured two people, killed the apparent bomber, and caused panic among Christmas shoppers in Stockholm Saturday.

The Swedish news agency TT said it had received an email warning with a threat to Sweden and its people ahead of the blasts. The agency said the threat was linked to Sweden's presence in Afghanistan, where it has a force of 500 soldiers, mainly in the north.

"Now your children, daughters and sisters shall die like our brothers and sisters and children are dying," the news agency quoted the e-mail as saying.
