Fox News Latino could not have made a more misinformed choice to make a point about "anchor babies." Penelope Cruz is not an undocumented resident. Her presence in this country is entirely lawful. She moved to California at the age of 25. She also lived in New York for a number of years. She owns real estate in the U.S.

Penelope Cruz owns a number of homes including a Balinese residence in the Hollywood Hills, a home in Madrid, Spain, and a newer property Cruz and new husband Javier Bardem enhabit in Coldwater Canyon, Los Angeles.

Among her American made films are “Blow,” “Vanilla Sky” and “Nine.” "Blow" grossed $53 million in the U.S. Its production budget was $53 million. Not only did it generate income and jobs, it also generated U.S. tax revenue. She was also in Sex and the City II. The lifetime gross of all the films she's been is exceeds $500 million. One can only imagine how much money the upcoming Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides will generate in the U.S.

“Fox News Latino is being insensitive and their actions are reprehensible.The term ‘anchor baby’ is equivalent to other defamatory terms such as ‘wetback,’ ‘pickan**ny’ and ‘tar baby.’ Media outlets should never use these demeaning terms in connection with precious babies, and it is unfortunate that we have to inform FOX News of this when they are typically viewed as conservative.”

Penelope Cruz was born and raised in Spain. If she were not Hispanic, would the radical right have chosen her to denigrate? Has anyone ever called Nicole Kidman an "anchor baby?" Kidman has dual citizenship in Australia and the United States because her Australian parents (non U.S. citizens) were in Hawaii when she was born, entitling her to U.S. citizenship. The attack on Cruz is just another blatant example of hateful anti-immigrant bigotry.

As if Penelope Cruz needs to have a baby in The USA to give either herself or the baby some sort of advantage. These bigots can't even keep their own internal logic straight.

saw that movie?! I couldn't really decide whether I liked it or not. Kind of how I feel about most woody allen movies. They are interesting/fun enough. But not nearly as "deep" as he thinks they are... I think.
I bet they "got together" on that set.

what more favorable immigration status Cruz and Bardem might be able to secure for themselves on the basis of having a U.S. citizen child (the only theoretically legitimate meaning to the "anchor baby" epithet). Is there any? Are they in some danger of being told to leave this country involuntarily that would be allayed if they had a kid here? Otherwise, their future child is no "anchor" at all. Anyone here who knows the actual answer under immigration law?

was a bad choice as a poster-woman for this xenophobic cause...I don't think most red blooded American males have a problem with Penelope Cruz making a life here, even those with a tendency to be haters.

What is a "Balinese residence in the Hollywood Hills"? Has Bali moved to Southern California? I thought the Pacific plate was sliding away from the North American plate.

I have a friend who is a native Balinese (he lives in a Balinese residence in Bali). He was visiting here in Northern California a couple years ago and it was silly to see how often we got pulled over by cops simply because (to them) he looks Mexican. The cops would then lie about "not signaling" when changing lanes to justify the stop. An education for a pasty white guy like me to see first hand DWB in operation.
