Thursday Night Open Thread

The Senate has confirmed Michele Leonhart as head of the DEA. No change there either.

I just got home from a miserable day...a completely unexpected, emergency root canal. It hurts way too much to blog, so here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

Good news would especially be welcome.

Happy Holidays to you, huh?  I hope the oral surgeon wasn't too intimidated to give you a script for the good stuff...

especially for the Western US--undoing Bush/Norton bad policy on wilderness.

"I am proud to sign a secretarial order that restores protections for the wild lands that the Bureau of Land Management oversees on behalf of the American people," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in Denver, where he announced the shift.

The order essentially repeals a policy adopted in 2003 under then Interior Secretary Gale Norton. That policy stated that Interior could not designate some wilderness protections on its own and had to rely only on Congress for any designations.

Jeralyn you had to have an awful root canal. Anything having to do with the mouth is extremely painful for me at least. Having a baby hurts less than some of the dental work I've had done.

Personally, I'd far rather a root canal than a bad spider bite.

I'm going to be feeling spiders in the bed all week now, thanks!

    Root canals shouldn't hurt (none / 0) (#8)

if they're done properly.  Something's not quite right here.

What's bad about root canals is that a fairly large percentage of them get infected afterwards, which the dentists never warn you about, and send you screaming back to have the temporary filling opened up so they can drain, more antibiotics, then another visit to close them up again.  I had a couple that got reinfected multiple times before they settled down.

I learned, actually, how to scratch a hole in the temp filling myself so I wouldn't have to wait overnight (this stuff always happens when the offices are going to be closed for hours, or even days, preferably around 6 on a Friday night...) to have it dealt with.

But the root canal procedure itself shouldn't hurt if you've been given the right amount of novocaine or whatever to begin with.

That sounds very NOT FUN (none / 0) (#9)

And it's probably a good reminder that flossing is not optional. I love the Reach Access flosser. It has a long handle so you don't have to reach into the back of your mouth, and the floss is very narrow and high tension.

    Yes, flossing is a must. (none / 0) (#16)

There is a significant relationship between flossing, periodontal health and prevention of heart diseases. It is probably among the best and simplest steps we can take on our own for not only good dental hygiene but also a healthy cardiovascular system. Of course, a good diet and exercise is not to be overlooked.

when an abscess or infection is the reason for the root canal, not the result of it. See here.

An acute abscess is characterized by pain, swelling, and fever....Pain is gnawing and continuous. The involved tooth is painful when percussed (tapped), and often the teeth cannot close without added discomfort. ...If treatment is delayed, the infection may spread through adjacent tissues, causing cellulitis, varying degrees of facial edema, and fever....Local swelling and gingival fistulas may develop opposite the apex of the tooth....Antibiotics may be prescribed if systemic symptoms such as fever and swelling in the lymph glands are present. (Mouth infections often affect the lymph glands in the neck region.)

is brutal...rather have a broken leg than an abscess or toothache.  Ya can't eat, drink, talk, do anything really without agony.

At least you're on your way to pain free, and I hop ya get there by Christmas...maybe that's your silver lining...it hit yesterday instead of today or tomorrow, and you were able to take care of it.

It always bothered me that dental care is viewed sperate from, and of lesser importance than health care in our society.  How many people are sitting in dental pain right now with no means to see a dentist?  I'm not talking just the homeless, but working people with health insurance, only they don't have 2 grand laying around.  How many people getting passed over for jobs because their teeth are eyesores?  It's a silent quality of life killer...senseless pain, depression, painkiller addiction.

It would be great if we could somehow roll dental into general health care and make it available to more of our people.

Oh, abcesses are brutally painful. (none / 0) (#20)

I understood you to be saying the root canal itself was painful.  But they're supposed to clear up the infection with antibiotics before they go after the root canal, if I remember right, and particularly because of that post-root-canal infection/abcess problem, which is more likely if the original abcess hasn't been completely suppressed.

    yes, it's the abscess (none / 0) (#21)

that's so painful. The antibiotics are helping but they take 24 hours or more to really make a difference, both in terms of the pain and the swelling. I'm just hoping they got it all.

It safely to Ensenada. Beautiful sunset. Lively babd! Including a small boy play penny whistle, balting out carols on street corner downtown. We both forgot to bring our passports. Return trip might be quite a bit longer as we will have to get in the "no passport lane at the border crossing on Christmas, a Christmas morning, although the traffic @ the border is usually minimal then.

they changed the rules after 9/11, and you must have a passport to go to Mexico, Canada, and Carribean nations...when a drivers license/birth certificate used to suffice.

Oh well, worry about that later, right Oc?  I can think of worse places to be stuck.  Enjoy!  Have a Don Julio for me...Feliz Navidad!

Monday night. Drove to Ensenada yesterday. No insulated containers. Kdog, I'm calling you if we cannot re-enter U.S.  Yes, we should have packed our passparts, but my brother's is in FL.  We are depending on the input of a trolley security officer we talked to @ the border b/4 driving into Mexico. Hope he's right!

cannot refuse U.S. citizens entry into the U.S. They might give you the third degree in order to establish your citizenship, though. Start trying to remember the mascot of your high school football team!

get sending my Chistmas wishes to all on the site before The Big Guy made his rounds.

I've been working in a temporary gig - document review, they call it - since mid-November and have been living out of a suitcase all that time without having been back to my humble abode. It's like 400 miles one way and I've been hoovering up all the hours I can get - nearly 70 a week every 7 day week since Thanksgiving.  I've been either too tired or too disinclined to drive 800 miles in my aging car....

Which leads me to one thing you should all hold in mind:  when people talk about the wikileaks dump of 250k documents as being something minimal or something easily digested, consider this.  We've had upwards of 40 attorneys (the number varies) working this pile of work since mid-November working hours similar to mine.  In that time, we've gone through about half a million documents, i.e., about twice the number of the wikileaks pile.  And we're not really delving into deep reading of our documents, unlike some would do with a wiki cable.  We're just skimming, figuring out in which pile of fifteen or twenty is where the document belongs.

In any event, as I write this the sun is slowly setting outside the windows of my train and I'm thinking about sleeping in my own bed tonight and getting to cook my own breakfast (as opposed to gulping something in/from a convenience store) in the morning and seeing snow instead of people going on about how cold it is when it really isn't all that cold.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
