House Dems Say No to Tax Cut Deal, Senate Proceeds

Update: It looks like the deal will pass.

The House Democratic Caucus has voted to reject President Obama's compromise tax deal.

While this doesn’t necessarily scuttle the whole tax deal, it is “highly unlikely” that the tax-cut agreement will come to the floor as is, according to senior Democratic aides. A tax compromise could still pass if an overwhelming majority of Republicans voted for it alongside several dozen Democrats.

The White House responds:

“The House and Senate are working through the normal process of bringing a bill forward, and we are confident that the major components of the tax framework that we fought for will remain in the final package brought to the floor and ultimately passed by Congress,”

The Senate is proceeding to consider the bill this afternoon.

It sounds like they have planted the flag though on the estate tax issue.  I suppose if they get a better tax rate on that, they'll give.

    abdication of any fiduciary responsibility (5.00 / 4) (#10)
by ricardo on Thu Dec 09, 2010 at 06:32:09 PM EST
Any remaining fiduciary responsibility on Obama's part has disappeared: if the tax cuts had only been allowed to expire there could have been hundreds of billions of dollars in new revenue that could have been used for effective, targeted green infrastructure, but instead we have hundreds of billions more in debt and a "temporary" payroll tax cut that will never be restored - something that will only further exacerbate the social security "crisis" in the upcoming years.

Does anybody seriously think that an unemployment insurance extension is permanently off the table? - pull the plug on UI and it would have been front page headlines and the lead in the evening news as the suffering of the former middle class became the narrative du jour.  Or is Katie Couric going to lead with a story from Florida's Gulf Coast exposing the pain of some billionaires who are unable to take their yachts to sea because they can't afford the extra millions a year in gas and maintenance when their tax cuts expire.

And the tax relief accruing to the middle class: it's chicken feed (when it's not crack, that is)...a few hundred dollars a year that will buy more toxic stuff from China...god forbid we buy stuff from our own green industries.

Obama sends young Americans into harm's way every day in Iraq and Afghanistans and he quite understands the calculus of jeopardizing American lives for American interests.  Yet, he said in his presser this week that he didn't want Americans back home held hostage - just keep feeding them whatever opiate of the masses they're ingesting this week, right?

    It's all very sad...

that the Democrats are "holding the legislation hostage." Apparently, one of his advisors told him to keep hammering away at the talking point that somebody somewhere is holding something hostage.

I'm beyond disgusted with this guy.

the those that are balking at the new tax cut compromise come out and say we can't afford "any" of the Bush tax cuts at the present time, then they will have taken a valid stand and I'll start listening to what they have to say.

So far the Dems bitch about tax cuts for the rich but want them to stay in place for everyone else, and the Repubs want tax cuts for everyone. Take a stand and push for them all to expire and begin acting fiscally responsible.
