REMINDER: Reid Promised Vote On Public Option

On March 19, 2010, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said:

Reid promises public option vote 'in the coming months'

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) promised two Democratic senators this week a Senate vote on the public option "in the coming months." In a letter to Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), the top Senate Democrat said he was committed to pursuing the controversial public insurance option later this year. "Like you, I remain committed to pursuing the public option," Reid wrote in a letter dated Thursday, which was obtained and published by the Huffington Post. "As we have discussed, I will work to ensure that we are able to vote on the public option in the coming months."

(Emphasis supplied.) Just sayin'

... is "I will work to ensure" the same as "I promise that"?  If so, what do the words "work to" mean, as compared with saying "I will ensure"?  Just wonderin'.

Anyway, as Majority Leader, all Reid needs to do is schedule a vote. If it is filibustered, it is filibustered, but then Reid can say he kept his promise.

does Reid actually have the authority to just schedule such a vote?  Has the requisite bill made it out of committee?  If not, "work[ing] to ensure that we are able to vote" really doesn't have all that much meaning.  And with a lot of his fellow Dems in the Senate figuring that Reid is a dead man walking and won't be their colleague any longer in a matter of months, I doubt that Reid has too much pull left within the Democratic Caucus.

    gives him that authority actually.

He does not need a bill out of committee to schedule a vote on a bill.

was passed in December. He took a House bill that was passed, stripped it and put in his health care bill - which got the 60 votes and then went back to the House where it passed in March.

I keep reading that's the only possible reason any one of the "cultists" could possibly have for criticizing Obama.

Obama will apply populism and ban insurance company rate hikes, thus making it uneconomical for any company to sell health insurance.  Then you can have a public option by default without needing a vote.
