it was really gray-on-gray -- and on such little screens.  Better contrast, actually black-and-white, would have been a blessing . . . especially through all that static and "snow," remember?

So the littlest kid also got the fun, before solid-state, of being the one to not watch teevee but to stand next to the teevee and jiggle the rabbit ears.

My baby brother still raises that issue, when we air family issues. :-)

I'd put my money on the Hebes.

Isn't it funny how we get used to names which are somewhat offensive---like Indians, Braves, Knickerbockers---but if you see an old name like the Hebrews for the first time, you really do a doubletake. I know I did.

of the lameness that is the NY Mets organization, the team won't be wearing their "Los Mets" jerseys on their trip to AZ this year, or when AZ comes to town, despite the fact the team already has "Los Mets" jerseys that they've worn for a couple years for a couple games a year in homage to the support they receive from the latino community.

I've been tempted recently, now I'm especially glad I haven't broken my boycott of Sh*ti Field yet.  The Wilpon family, only 10% less lame than the Dolan family.

birthday of Go Seigen (Born Wu-Ching Yuan in China, but lived in Japan from his teens),
the most dominant, brilliant go player of the 20th century---possibly the greatest player in history.
He was not allowed to play in Japanese title matches before about 1960, but he played many 10 games matches with top  players in the 40's and 50's. He was so strong that he pushed all the top Japanese players to a small handicap (in go, 3 wins in a row makes the loser take a handicap of 1 stone).
I love playing over his games. Even though there is a lot I don't understand, his power and style are obvious.

If anyone has read "The Master of Go" (I have not), that story is related to Go Seigen's early playing history.

Back in the 90's, I met Iwamoto Kauro and lost a game at 4 stones to him. He was 93 at the time.
I think I mentioned his Hirsoshima story before. He was playing a title match  in  Aug. 1945 in Hiroshima. The police chief told the players to move outside the city limits, because the city was known to be a prime target.
They were playing as the bomb went off.
Iwamoto devoted his later years to promoting go around the world as a means for fostering understanding and world peace.
