Lost Finale Open Thread

Final episode of Lost tonight.

Also, Go Suns!

Update (TL): And the finale of Celebrity Apprentice is tonight. Go Bret Michaels! He's out of the hospital and on a plane to New York, subarachnoid hemorrhage, warning stroke, hole in the heart and all. (The plane had to stop in Nashville when he didn't feel well, but he got back on and is expected to make the finale.) Added: He made it to New York and left the hotel for the studio a little while ago. There will be a doctor in the house. (No spoilers as to who wins in comments, please.)

Open Thread.

If the Lakers win and both conferences are 3-0 (none / 0) (#1)

can we declare this the worst NBA playoffs in history?

It makes me wonder if the Celtics are that good or if the Magic (and the Hawks, and the Bobcats) are really that bad. You have to wonder, if the Celtics had played the Hawks, would they have won every game by 60 points?

But wait until the finals (none / 0) (#2)

    Another classic Lakers/Celtics series....

The Lakers are better than they were the last time they faced the Celtics in the finals two years ago....But the Celtics may be better too.

he's going to do it his way. He's going to go out rocking. From his website:

Bret is a very passionate person and refuses to live his life curled up in a ball wondering if or when something else might happen. No doubt life has risks and rewards, being a type 1 diabetic he has lived with struggles and complications since he was six years old but he always tries to maintain positive attitude and seldom lets things get him down. I have seen him handle the ups and downs, highs and lows of this disease. No doubt these recent medical complications have been tough but he wants to continue to live his life, enjoy every day and get back on the road. He is taking all the medications and steps to insure that he can do that. As his friends and staff we are all making sure that he is not taking any undo risks and we are certainly taking every precaution possible to insure his health

And he's competing for the American Diabetes Association -- if he wins tonight, he'll present a $250,000 bonus check to them. He's a severe diabetic and it looks like his young daughter may be diabetic. She was recently tested.

opera. Well, I never had the chance, but Domingo was advised not to finish an opera a few years ago because his blood pressure was sky high.
Then there was the baritone who died on stage after singing (in some Verdi opera) that he was going to die. Famous singer, but I can't recall the name now.
Tatiana Nikolaeva had a stroke while performing and died.
Are you familiar with her? She was  a Russian pianist who impressed Shostakovich with her Bach. He wrote his 24 preludes and fugues for her.
Her Bach is quintessentially Russian---definitely musical, but heavy and ponderous. I think her Bach is a beautiful sounding artistic failure.

(also, IIRC). I believe he started bleeding in his throat while singing and had to stop performing. He died about a month later.
Some voice teachers used to believe that he had a bleeding vocal cord and that's what killed him; in fact, it was pleurisy.
    Ok, we can google now.

I recalled. After the performance where he bled from his throat, he suffered terribly for about 8 months from pleurisy and possibly other conditions. He probably died from peritonitis, according to wiki.

    Here's an anecdote I learned second (5.00 / 0) (#18)

hand.  Plastic surgeon says when family/patient ask him to pray with them before surgery, he declines.  Why?  Surgeon IS God.

Well, my question was based on (none / 0) (#19)

    a story I just read.
When a woman was told by the surgeon (at a Catholic hospital) that he and the nurses prayed for success, she told him " I don't want a surgeon who prays to God. I want a surgeon who thinks he is god"

This is in a thead over at Pharyngula about a husband who doesn't want his wife to have her foot amputated (not clear if she's competent---she just had 6 (!) heart attacks two months ago)
because he wants prayer to have a chance to work.
Based on my own, vicarious experience of several cases, if a surgeon told me he wanted to amputate my leg, I would say "how high?".
These guys don't suggest amputation lightly.

    for the War on Spice?

This stuff kinda reminds me of meth...there is a school of thought that says cocaine prohibition led to meth becoming a popular alternative...cheaper and can be produced domestically, and loads more harmful.  Now we have Spice...a cheaper alternative to reefer, only more harmful.

Prohibition...bringing you cheaper and more dangerous alternatives to prohibited products, then we prohibit those...it's the gift that keeps on giving!

    Terrible finale (none / 0) (#22)
by waldenpond on Mon May 24, 2010 at 09:25:09 AM EST
It has to be the worst finale I have ever seen.  It was a series of replays to sappy music.  They made no attempt to wrap up story lines, merely an unmoving romantic 'homecomings'.  Ended with a  funeral.   I thought I would buy DVDs and rewatch, not now.  Very unsatisfying.
