Monday Night Open Thread

I'm just getting online today -- way too busy with work -- so I have nothing for you. It will be the same tomorrow and Wednesday it's a week filled with hearings, jail visits, motions and conferences. I'm about to skim the 300 plus emails in my in box.

So the owner of the Times Square SUV sold it to a stranger a few weeks ago. He's not under suspicion. Authorities say the stranger is Pakistani and a CT resident who paid cash, and recently traveled to Pakistan. How do they know that? Was the car owner able to discern nationality? Did he view a drivers' license showing a CT residence? It doesn't sound like the buyer ever registered the vehicle. The "Pakistani" man is now a person of interest.

Have there been any photos of this bomb? Was it even assembled? Or was it just a bunch of potentially dangerous components? Sounds like the latter. And the fertilizer was not the kind that explodes.

Our last open thread is getting cumbersome, here's another one, all topics welcome.

good thing you got to go to the Florida Keys Jeralyn because the oil spill is predicted now to head to the keys.  Looks like some of us won't ever get the chance.

just what it would take for the American government to get on the side of the American people.  Here we are faced with one of the greatest ecological disasters in our history, and President Obama is still sticking to his energy plan that would reduce our "dependence on foreign oil", when it is a fungible commodity traded on the world market. Yes, let us reduce our dependence of oil, but that is is different strategy.  Moreover, BP is responsible for the blow and the gushing of crude oil into the sea at the rate of at least 200,000 gallons a day, is in charge of the clean-up with the oversight of the Coast Guard and Interior Department. BP, initially, said there was no oil spill, all the oil flowing into the Gulf was just from the platform that exploded. The response was, oh, okay, keep us informed The Obama administration was too slow in response.  The closeness of the agency that oversees and the industry is so close that the US Minerals Management Services gives annual safety awards to industry.  All should be safe, and if some are doing something special, it should become a standard for the industry.

until there is some serious campaign finance reform, especially in light of the Citizens United decision.  Our elected representatives are too tied to the people/corporations who give them money, as opposed to the average citizen. Yes, people get the type of government they deserve, but too many people seem not to be willing to educate themselves about what is really going on and continue to vote against their own self interests.  Far too many listen to Fox News/Limbaugh/Hannity/Beck and so on.  As long as this continues, I am very pessimistic about the future of our country.

If I heard right on CBS radio on the hourly update, the car was sold on Craig's list and the buyer and seller corresponded (so they were probably able to trace communications to an IP address) and the seller said he thought the buyer was "Hispanic or Middle Eastern".

purchased the SUV, is a naturalized US citizen, was recently in Pakistan.  He is of Pakistani descent.  He bought the SUV for cash.  -NYT

Federal authorities have identified the man who recently bought the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder that was rigged to explode in Times Square as a naturalized United States citizen from Pakistan who recently returned from a trip there, . . .

wasn't re-registered after the owner sold it to him and they were strangers? Track the ip address on Craig's List? Is nothing private anymore? Don't answer, I already know the unfortunate answer.

TV correspondents is that they've intercepted some communications electronically which have led them to their "person of interest"--

Now arrested at Kennedy Airport, btw.

This investigation goes way, way beyond standard police work.

Jeralyn.  I think the government knows what I bought at the store last week, what I watched on teevee last night, etc.  And what I will watch tomorrow night, even though I don't know yet.
