Crist Vetoes FL Anti-Choice Bill

AP:

Gov. Charlie Crist has vetoed a bill that would have required women seeking an abortion during the first trimester to undergo an ultrasound exam and pay for it. Crist said Friday it put an inappropriate burden on women seeking an abortion. Crist was a Republican until he left the party recently to make an independent bid for the Senate.

His veto message.

Inappropriate burden on women, rights of privacy, unwisely expand the role of government....thank  you Crist.

inhumane arrogant acts of drug warrioring, Florida jailed a patient confined to a wheelchair, in intense pain with MS and botched back surgery, because he violated some technical rules on his narcotics prescriptions (received legitimate, but undated prescriptions from his doctor, and filled in the dates himself later). They gave him 25 years for "drug trafficking", although they admitted he never gave the drugs to anybody. The jury was never aware that he would be sent to prison.

Crist gave him a full pardon after the case became widely known. He obviously is one of the good guys, even if he was a Republican.

To me the issue isn't Crist's veto but that this terrible bill was passed to begin with.  This shows how far to the right the Florida GOP has gone.

Moderate conservatives like Crist are no longer welcome in the Florida GOP.  The Florida GOP is now the party of right-wing extremists.

"only the Democrats will protect your abortion rights," eh?

They really are going to have to work hard to come up with a new cudgel.

While I am very happy about this veto, it is one man that is already on the outs with his party.

I don't know who said that only the Democrats will protect your "abortion rights."  They've done a lousy job of late.  However I will take a short vacation from saying bad things about Republicans if you can find me one who is still in the GOP who will protect our reproductive rights, including the right to choose abortion.

Kos predicts that Crist will eventually promise to caucus with the Democrats to 'seal the deal' with the undecideds. Could be.

It's nice to see someone pandering to the Democratic voters for a change.

    Parent
If Gov. Crist doesn't really believe in what he wrote, but wrote it to get Democratic votes, then it is pandering. I thought andgarden implied he did it for the votes, which puts it in the pander camp. Whatever his motivation, I also happen to believe it was the right thing to do. They aren't mutually exclusive concepts.

He justified his decision with such tried and true talking points straight out of real womankind life, and the lives of anyone who genuinely cares about any woman.  I haven't heard such words out of a candidates mouth in so long I almost swooned.

I could actually see voting for Crist in this race (if the Democrat is running a distant third when it comes to the finish line, or if Crist actually continues to appear to be more committed to civil rights then the Democratic candidate).

This is the first time in a couple of years that I've felt that women have been recognized by a politician as a panderable voting bloc. Such a contrast to how the Democratic party has treated women. (or, as Rahm Emanuel put it "where the f*ck are they going to go?" Take that, Rahm!!!)

the Republicans, I think he might have. I get the impression he really did hate this law. But if he thought it would cost him the nomination, he would not have done it.

Also keep in mind that if he was truly the Republican leader in FL this law would not have passed the FL congress.
