Sunday Afternoon: Homeward Bound

We're driving back from Aspen. Another great weekend at Owl Farm with the NORML lawyers. It rained all day yesterday but that didn't stop the outdoor picnic (Anita had tents brought in.) The Red Tones played for hours, the food was great and we all missed Hunter. Friday night, Aspen top chef Chris Lantern of Cache Cache cooked another incredible feast for 200 at Gerry and Chris Goldstein's home.

it was the TL kid's first time staying at Owl Farm. He got to sleep in Johnny Depp's room and got a weekend course on all things Hunter, including watching a slew of old videos even I had never seen. He had a great time. He says it was like stepping into an alternate reality.

As to the current state of drug law reform, while we all recognized there's been progress the past few years with medical marijuana, we are also aware things go in cycles and another backlash is always around the corner. We are still years away from where we need to be. For those of us who have been fighting the battle in courtrooms for decades, we're so glad to see more and more of the next generation of lawyers joining us.

This is my first full blog post on my iPad as we're still driving. Just got to the top of Vail Pass. I'll be back blogging tonight.

I'm spending today as I have most days lately--battling annoying vertigo. I hated the spins when I was a kid and drank too much. I really hate them now, especially when I have work to do....

Obligatory over-50 health complaint aside, it looks like the Obama administration is focusing on the Gulf and gearing up for some serious damage control--of a political nature. What has happened to David Axelrod? Was 2008 just a fluke?

Like most everyone, I've been mourning the Gulf. There is a 1960s-era B & W photo on my mantle of my mother sitting cross-legged on the beach at Gulf Shores. She's younger there than I am now. She's wearing white denim shorts and a dark, collared shirt. She's holding up a fistful of white sand, slowly spilling it into the wind, smiling. It was one of the better moments of my mother's life....This is one of those "I'm glad she's not here to see this" moments. And I'm sad that my cousins' grandchildren won't know the Gulf the way we did.

Looks like he is going to use the spill to hammer GOP and recalcitrant Dems, into shifting their stance on energy policy and the environment. Let's hope he pulls it off and can capture American mind's to finally believing that we have to act on energy and the environment.

President Barack Obama says that the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster "echoes 9/11" in its power to change the course of American history.

"In the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11, I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come."

on driving on long trips because he doesn't think I'm a good driver. (I think I'm a great driver.) So I played with the iPad the whole way.

It's really fast and the 3G (or E when 3G wasn't available) worked great.

The 6-year-old mare won the $200,000 Vanity Handicap by a half-length on Sunday at Hollywood Park, rallying with her usual last place move to overtake St Trinians approaching the wire.

You go girl! Oh yeah, and then there's that record she set :)

animal doing what it was born to do. Yes, there are problems in racing, but there are those that do it better and advocate for the better. It's really not that different from dogs. Good breeders/owners vs bad etc. Not all horse breeders/owners/trainers are created equal.

I think it's also part the figurative artist in me. Just watching the anatomy of these horses in action blows me away. And this filly just rocks. I like her personality. Plus, she beats the boys with style  ;)

I buy leather, not that much though (can't remember the last time!). I will be buying some skins from a rancher soon to restore some old chairs.

    Mineral Fueled War (none / 0) (#21)
by squeaky on Sun Jun 13, 2010 at 09:38:07 PM EST
WASHINGTON -- The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials.

The previously unknown deposits -- including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium -- are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe.

An internal Pentagon memo, for example, states that Afghanistan could become the "Saudi Arabia of lithium," a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and Blackberries.
