Spain's last stand in the World Cup comes this afternoon versus Honduras. With Chile's 1-0 win over Switzerland, Spain's chances hinge on a win today. If they draw, even a win over Chile can not guarantee Spain's passage to the Round of 16 (Switzerland could qualify with a win in its final match with Honduras.) Spain, the pre-tournament favorite, has to win today. And even a win today is no guarantee- only a guarantee that Spain will control its own destiny.

It's a huge match.

    When I was 15 or so and have loved Updike ever since.  Unabashedly American, I often recommend him to my English relatives.

    on the plane to a titanium rib extension surgery.  It is actually nice to come home and have the distraction of Spain fighting to stay alive in the World Cup.  Keeps me from worrying about things I have no control over.

    I'm alway busy then, traveling, doing the pre-op, trying to keep him up late the night before so his wait the next day isn't as long for him, then the healing time, making sure he gets pain meds on time. They just got one of those stupid pill/med dispensers last time and the nurses sure were already sick of it because you can't get the kids' pain meds early by even a few minutes, then start down the hall making the rounds to your patients.  It really seemed to mess with how well they were able to take care of their patients.  There are no early meds acquired.  If you have a kid in extreme pain fifteen minutes before the next does it is pointless to try to call their doctor too.  By the time you get through and get permission for an early dose or something extra the kid has suffered the whole time and now can finally have the next dose.  I hate it like mad, but it kept me busy.  I'm glad you brought this up because it reminded to explain the new meds situation to my husband so he can plan accordingly.  He puts his foot down on stuff like this better than I do right at the start, and he will have orders for something to be available to Joshua that first night if the pain breaks through.  Then I will get from him what it was that they figured out and use it next time when I go with him.

    • Les Miz: for examples of tournament p!ssiness, France has been a veritable p!ssoir; too many ridiculous moments to list but it's a cast of thousands, each apparently determined to have a turn in the spotlight.
    • England: geez, what a bunch of mopes. Shake it off and get over it already. Last I read, they went out for a team meeting over beers to air some grievances after Gerrard ragged on the fans for disloyalty, then apologized, then ragged on media for making him apologize.
    • Azzurri: The usual 60-million headed hydra of an Asst. Coach picking apart Coach Lippi, pre-emptively so on potentially starting Pirlo. IMO all this crap is the Jan Brady Syndrome against Masha Masha Masha from Brazil.

    Sadly, this is only a handful of the non-playing related headlines taking away from some exciting ups and downs over the weekend.

    I am experiencing some serious schadenfreude watching the European teams self destruct.  Couldn't tell you why exactly.

    But France has been by far the best.  I mean, you got the coach sending people home, the team refusing to practice and the former star who disgraced the team last year being interviewed about this year's problems.  Not to mention the fact that if it weren't for a well-placed handball in qualifying they wouldn't even be here.  And that was done by the player on the team it's easiest to actually like - who isn't even playing in the cup.

    The icing on the cake would be if they lose to South Africa.  I REALLY hope they lose to South Africa.

    I join you in hoping that S.Africa gives them a righteous spanking. Some of those fans have been saving for YEARS for a seat at the WC. Would be a shame for the host nation to be eliminated with visitors like Les Miz in their Group.

    I give no credit to the 'because'.....

    As MY points out  [Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan each had four chiefs of staff during the course of their eight years in office, and George H.W. Bush had three in a single term, so consequently I wouldn't find it shocking if Rahm Emanuel steps down sometime after the midterms]

    so two years would be about right, it doesn't seem like a fun job.  Two years to build whatever power you can and then on to the next step on the ladder.

    is really going to muck things up about General McChrystal.  I don't like McChrystal's past dealings prior to the Obama administration...not one little bit.  When he went to work for Obama though and did things the way Obama wanted them done, I have zero problems....and in fact I have a frickin fierce loyalty now.  I knew that Biden doesn't like McChrystal or his COIN strategies, and I knew that Holbrooke, Biden, and James Jones have tried to gang up on and feck McChrystal up.  But I just read in the Times that the Rolling Stone story seems to line out who is in the McChrystal camp and that would be Gates and Hillary.  I will never get credit though for developing my own loyalties being the PUMA that I am :)  I am loyal to McChrystal and his "ideas" not because I think they are the only thing that will work and everything that Biden, Holbrooke, and Jones would like to do would amount to little more than dressed up war crimes.....but probably because I'm sich a PUMA <snark> :)  Why am I always agreeing with Hillary?  It gets tiresome being such a PUMA and I'm so brainwashed apparently I know what Hillary would want me to think before she goes public with it :)

    that is about 30 mins old.  McChrystal is apologizing but continuing to talk a lot too which is odd, very very odd.  I think he wants out of the Afghanistan mission if the Obama administration isn't going to listen to him as to what needs to happen.  He definitely isn't signing up for more collateral damage and once Holbrooke and Biden and Jones have him out of the way there will be much much more of that.  I hope my husband knows he has DEFINITELY done his last tour under what will be the "new rules" if McChrystal goes.  McChrystal has given enough to this mission.  There is no use in fighting with anyone at this point.  He does nothing but work and work and work and it has been that way for years now, he doesn't get vacations like pols do and wouldn't even take them if he had them to take. I don't see how he could give more and maybe at this juncture he needs to give less and get out of this snakepit while the getting is good.
