your buzz kdog. You obviously need some stronger stuff ;-). You said:
The world will be as f*cked as ever when the World Cup ends...trust me.
You're wrong there my man. The world, i.e. the Gulf of Mexico, will be considerably more f*cked when the World Cup ends on July 11th. That's another 1-1.7 million barrels of oil in the Gulf. In other words, an additional 4-7 Exxon Valdezes.

If this continues through the summer and into the fall, it may be hazardous for you to spark up in NYC. That would really crunch the buzz...hey kdog? :)

And I don't know...once you reach a certain level of f*ckeditude it ceases to matter...I fear the Gulf is past there.

If it wasn't for all the innocent wildlife victims I'd say we deserve to choke on all that oil, from FLA to Maine...chickens coming home to roost.  I've long said better this than polluting the sh*t out of a 3rd world country who doesn't even get the benefits of being energy gluttons...though we are polluting the sh*t out of those countries as well.

All we peons can do is cut down our energy consumption and enjoy the World Cup...might be the last one if prophecy holds:)

from five (at least; two more still being assessed) tornadoes in the town of Eagle in Wisconsin, a bit north of you in Chicago.

Well, the former town of Eagle, as it's a small town, and more than 20 homes were destroyed, and more than 100 severely damaged.  I didn't know there even were 120 homes in the town.

Sad thing, too, is that it's the site of the wonderful living history museum, Old World Wisconsin, with many ethnic cultures' buildings (homes, schools, etc.) saved from around the state and moved there.  The octagonal barn -- it's a beaut -- endured some damage.  But it could have been worse, as you ought to see (you can see, actually, online) the photos of the hundreds and hundreds of trees sheared off to stumps all around it.

Sad, too, that the town's tornado sirens did not give warning.  A lot of people don't realize that the sirens don't go off until there has been a touchdown, so if you're the site of the first one, well, you won't hear a siren. . . .

Good thing, though, is that despite the extent of devastation to the present and to the past -- no deaths and only minor injuries from all those tornadoes.  Amazing.

There are too many other interesting sports out there.  Games, especially at playoff levels, should not end in ties - there should be a winner and a loser.  That's the point of playing the game.  Look at that tennis match that just ended - it took them 3 days, but someone finally won.  And to routinely have games where no one scores, well, it's just not for me.  (That's not to say I have not found the guys who are playing at the WC, well, hot.  There are some advantages to watching this particular sport!)  :-)

in a day or two, there will no longer be ties, just play to win, and the loser goes home.

As for the 3-day tennis match, wake me up when you have such a marathon for the final championship match -- a McEnroe-Borg type affair that's the final decider.

Otherwise, 3 days for a match at a non-championship level of competition, well you've really got to be a tennis fanatic to actually watch all 3 days of it as opposed to just admiring its oddity from a distance in the sports pages -- probably the same smallish number of people who would stick around to watch an entire 20 inning baseball marathon game finally come to a conclusion.

How can you guys get so excited about watching a sport where the average number of goals per game is less than 2, and a tie is allowed to stand? the great save, the great tackle, the great long ball, the ball control, etc.

The same way you appreciate a great catch or run in American football that doesn't produce a touchdown.  Or a great crossover move in b-ball that doesn't produce a basket.  Or a bonecrushing check in hockey.

And the fact that scoring is rare in futbol just amps up the elation and excitement when a team does find the net...it's like an explosion of joy or agony.

Big city or small town?  After a month here, well, I think that I could live in one of the big cities, laughable as is the emphasized item in our guidebook that Italian police really enforce traffic regulations.  Ha!  I found few crosswalks in Rome that were actually available for walking, as most were used as parking spaces.

But the small town life is so odd, so far behind the times in so many ways -- okay, I guess it's too much to have internet access as good as Mexico had ten years ago, but working toilets that don't waste gallons of water with the lousy installation here are rarities!  Above all, there is so much discourtesy, from everyday people right up to the top officials.  I've seen that from insularity in a small town in the U.S., but never like what I have seen here.

I'm bemused now by the common complaint that the U.S. is the rude culture, the noisy culture, the car culture, the crime and drug culture.  The things I have seen in a small town here. . . .

Obviously rooting for the American, but honestly - they're both kind of winners already - and neither one is gonna have any gas left in the tank after this one.

Also, in the real (unpleasant) world (of non sports related events), a judge overruled the drilling moratorium (although it's being appealed), a cap fell off the well - although it's now been put back on, and we're all still royally screwed.

Oh and Futurama is back on tv (yay!), Gates apparently wanted to keep McChrystal, and Friendly's has introduced a burger that replaces buns with grilled cheese - because we all need more fried cheese in our buns.

Michael, that wasn't McChrystal's strategy....that was the strategy of all of HIS bosses too.  Now I find out that Yon also gave background on McChrystal to the Rolling Stone reporter before the reporter met with McChrystal, and some of the Rolling Stone article is worded very similar to Mr. Yon's take on COIN.  It has a quote from a Special Forces soldier too upset because he can't get his Gun On under McChrystal the way he wants to, and I can just about promise you that "contact" was provided by Michael Yon.

Michael Yon has sent an email to General Petraeus expressing his full confidence in General Petraeus, and I think it is funny as hell.  Dear Michael, based on what it looks like you took part in....to include not understanding that the COIN strategy is one that belongs to the President of the United States and David Petraeus, I can promise you you will never have another military embed for the length of your natural life.  You email everyone you can imagine about how much full confidence you have in them as far as the military mission goes and enjoy your forever vacation in Thailand.  You managed to finish yourself too.

When Josh gets home and heals we will be on our way to Seattle before school starts.  We wanted to make certain that Joshua was up for keeping his feet first and going through another major surgery.  He just recently made his final decision.  He wants one more surgery first, oy...and about six months in casts bless his heart.  We got bad news about his back.  He will be a titanium rib kid for a very long time.  My husband finished growing very early, and I finished growing very late.  Joshua will have the rods in his back until he quits growing and they checked his growth plates yesterday.  He may be ten years old but he has the growth plates of an eight year old.  And yet, this is good for his feet if he wants to try to keep them.  The surgery they will do is they will take a wedge out of shin to bring his feet plantar again (he is toe walking).  Then they will try stapling the front of his tibia growth plate to his ankle and hopefully his heel will be encouraged to grow more and literally outgrow the front of his ankle, and he has many more years to do this in.  Poor kid though got my slow growing genes and Jew nose bump.  It was really not fair that he got the Jew nose bump, his nose was such a cute little button I thought for sure he got his dad's nose :)

to be making those kinds of complex decisions. And such a physical, emotional and mental journey for one so young. I wish all of you the best of outcomes.

And speaking as one who's got a bit of a bump in the schnozz, it ain't hurt me none. Oy!

Keep me posted on your travel plans to the Great NW. I do an annual end-of-summer BBQ, and it would be fun if you could all come.
