Monday Night Open Thread

There was a big explosion here just before dinner as a power sub-station blew about 1/2 mile away.

An Xcel power substation near National Jewish Hospital and Rose Medical Center exploded about 6:30 p.m. knocking out power to more than 37,000 customers, causing traffic jams and bringing curious spectators out across much of east Denver.

The explosion sent flames shooting 70 feet into the sky, said Denver Fire Lt. Phil Champagne. At 7:30 p.m. the flames were under control, Champagne said.

The TL kid was driving down the street from it and said there were two really loud booms and then flames and black smoke shot up really high in the sky. I was on the phone and didn't even hear it, but my power has been going on and off all night.

This is the second time in three weeks Xcel has had major problems. At least I have my iPad with its 10 hour battery and 3G for when the wi-fi goes out.

In any event, as I check on the news I've missed, here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

    The right-wing hit on Helen Thomas (5.00 / 3) (#2)
by FoxholeAtheist on Tue Jun 08, 2010 at 01:28:38 AM EST
    •  The video of Thomas's remarks was made by Rabbi David F. Nesenoff who 'interviewed' Helen Thomas, on the White House Lawn, on American Jewish Heritage Celebration Day, May 27/10. Imo, it appears to be a hidden camera -- and the interviewer is deceptively relaxed and cordial. Helen is friendly and in good spirits. The story and video appeared on RabbiLIVE.com on June 03/10. The original video is twice as long as the 1 minute clip most of us have seen.

    •  How did the video go viral? It first got picked up by the right-wing blogger Jeff Dunetz, who spiked it to the moon. The following account was written, by him, on June 07/10, evidently, prior to Thomas's resignation:
Friday morning (June 04/10), I received an email from a friend, Rabbi David Nessenoff which provided me my first look at the video of the now famous explosive interview with Helen Thomas. David had sent the video to a friend at a newspaper who didn't think it was a big story. My response to David was, give me a few hours and the video would become viral, and given some luck the video would have a half of million views before the end of the weekend (there were a million).

I quickly posted it on my site The Lid, wrote it up for Andrew Breitbart's Big Journalism, gave it to Scott Baker who posted it on Breitbart TV , and sent out tweets and emails to most of the large sites [including Drudge]. Before I left on a five hour car ride to my brother's house for the weekend the video was posted on the Big sites on the net. By the end of the day it was on radio and TV and the calls Thomas' head were all over the place...

Helen Thomas is merely a symptom of the problem, not the disease. Firing her would be like treating HIV with a band aid...I wonder if there would be the same calls for Thomas' head if she hadn't already been considered something of a joke by the press corps, someone who has stayed on long past her time.

Just examine the facts; Pat Buchanan who is a holocaust revisionist has a daily gig on MSNBC. Helen Thomas has a tiny voice compared to Pat Buchanan, yet it is Thomas' head being called for...firing her while ignoring the "cartel leaders" such as Sharpton, Buchanan, and the other big haters in the public eye is treating the symptom, but not the disease...

Charmed, I'm sure. It took 5 days for a conservative extremist to end Helen Thomas's 50 year career in journalism. But, like he said, he couldn't have done it without the help of the "big sites" on the net -- some of which are self-identified progressives.

Regarding the link, RabbiLIVE.com; and the link, original video; these two no longer link to the information/material they originally contained. The original material was removed sometime Tuesday evening. It has been replaced by something very objectionable. Don't open, or open at your own risk.

Sorry Kdog, I had to tuck this in under your kind comment.

Simply because people have come to expect that kind of thing from the nutjobs who inhabit the talk radio - Fox universe of discourse?

What do THESE people have to do to get fired; start from reading Mein Kampf, (just the part that attacks the Left), on the air?

I repeat. She said what she said.

No amount of parsing can change that.

because I'm borrowing it from Mom, BUT . . . If I see one more Tony for BP commercial, I may be buying Mom a new TeeVee.  Here's hoping I don't meet him on the street {pls note, I'm not prone to or suggesting violence, I'm just P*SSED~!} . . .  WhyTF?! didn't they have a front line like they do in a wild fire? If they really cared, they would have gone "all in".

All my crude oil conserving and non-driving years mean NOTHING in the face of this disaster. Voting doesn't seem to matter either . . . I think I will crawl into a hole. A nice self sustainable organic one . . . someone wake me when "we" get it . . . .

Climate change is still the bigger disaster, so your efforts at lowering your carbon use have not been in vain. Is burning this oil as gasoline better for the environment than dumping it in the ocean? Some say no.

    feel better now?

Either way, you are right about Hayward. Get off the TV.

that BP disaster is not as opposed to climate change. Rather it is a symptom of contributing factors to climate change and - significantly - it is an accelerator of climate change. Which is the bigger disaster is not really the question since they are different synergistic parts of the same ongoing disaster.

Also, I wonder who is saying that dumping crude and NG with over 800,000gal of Corexit (so far) is better (for ? environment) than using gasoline?

I used to go to middle school over there, Gove Aaron. It was so strange to drive by recently and see it all but boarded up. Strange, I say, but nevertheless somehow just.

That was probably the worst time in my life, and a couple of other kids there too.

There was one severely malnourished red-headed girl whose brother was locked in a closet for his entire life by her abusive parents. She would come to school, day after day, and you'd pass this most forlorn little girl in the world moving though the halls like a ghost. The administrators at Gove blew her off time and again (even though, to look at her it was easy to see something was seriously wrong at home). Finally somebody took her seriously enough to investigate the matter. I remember her crazy parents coming out to scream and yell at her near the buses one afternoon. Awful. Just bloody awful.

I think I remember that she and her brother were being either adopted or had a non-adopting benefactor after the news broke... I hope she and her brother made out okay. What a tough-from-the-core little girl she was. Much tougher than those of us who were making a show of, "back off, or else!"

Hard to believe I don't have more of these fond visits with my childhood memories...

Almost as shocking as that boom & ball in the sky last night...to be reading TL and discover another who went to the same junior high.
You mention the school's closed situation now. Think what it feels like to have attended the "prior" Gove across the street that burned down in the 70's with only the top of the parapet remaining.
I am sorry for the sad experience during your years there. Your story is instructive, tho. It reminds me how one fortunate or unfortunate experience can stay with us, even influence the rest of our years.  My years there were filled with very good teachers and a point that determined my career (when I decided to be a lawyer.) OTOH the high school years had some of the same shockeroos--e.g., wealth v. non-wealth and real world inclusion/exclusion issues--to which you refer. So, for me, it was the precursor Gove that sustained my self-esteem until leaving for college.
