Friday Morning Open Thread

World Cup -Brazil v. Netherlands this morning. Should be a great game. I like Brazil.

Wimbledon - Berdych v. Djokovic as we speak. Nerdych up a set. Later, Nadal v. Murray. A match to watch.

Tour de France - Prologue time trial tomorrow morning from Rotterdam (temporarily moved to France this year.) Stages 1 through 3 will take the peloton through the Netherlands and Belgium - cobbles and the Ardennes. After heading back to France, through the Alps and the Pyrennees, the Tour finishes on the Champs Elysees July 25.

Open Thread.

to Holland v. Brazil too...I prefer the men in orange.

I don't know if this has been discussed here but healthcare.gov is up.  I like their "Find Insurance Options" database.  I'm thinking about switching my plan (I have individual insurance) and it gave me 10 companies, each with multiple plans, in the span of 2 minutes.  Unfortunately no price estimates are available until October 2010 but it's still helpful.  And then when I clicked to the homepage it gave me the option to "go back to your coverage options" in case I did that by accident.  Neat!  Hopefully this will educate people on what's in the law.

What do you all think of it?

    I love Instant Karma!

I'm still suspicious about that ball. I don't care how many simulations were done in its development, you don't HALVE the stitching in a spherical missile and expect it to work kinda sorta the same way.

It can still bend, as has been shown by some glorious goals and lovely footwork so far, but IMO it favors a less "beautiful" style than Brazil or Spain.

    (and GOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!)

My SpFreTalian heart is still with Spain overall, but my head is leaning German.

I can't wait for the Nov/2010 publication ofhis memoirs, which he ordered sealed until 100 yrs. until after his death. His autobiography ...

... provides a remarkable account of how the dying novelist's final months were overshadowed by personal upheavals.

"It's completely at odds with the impression most people have of him," says the historian Laura Trombley, who this year published a book about Lyon called Mark Twain's Other Woman.

"There is a perception that Twain spent his final years basking in the adoration of fans. The autobiography will perhaps show that it wasn't such a happy time. He spent six months of the last year of his life writing a manuscript full of vitriol, saying things that he'd never said about anyone in print before. It really is 400 pages of bile."

Twain, who was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, had made several attempts to start work on autobiography, beginning in 1870, but only really hit his stride with the work in 1906, when he appointed a stenographer to transcribe his dictated reminiscences.

Your links are pretty cool usually, but this one to Twain has to be the coolest!

and we are numero uno. Take that Mexico! The BP oil spill is, as of yesterday, the largest ever in the Gulf of Mexico.   Based on the highest of the federal government's estimates of oil that has spewed into the Gulf waters for the past two and one-half months, the spill hit the 140.6 million gallon mark, eclipsing the puny 140 million gallon Ixtoc I spill off Mexico's Gulf coast in 1979 to 1980.  While Mexico's Pemex may contest the data leading to their heartbreaking loss, BP, with the Administration's customary acquiescence, can always counter with the real data of the amount of oil gushing since the April 20 blowout. Pemex's only possible argument is that the comparisons are not on equal footing, since Ixtoc 1 was one of those safe shallow water wells, and not a moratorium-prone deep water well.

looks like it will mean a lot of people I know will not stay in school, move back home, and one single father may have to sell his home (in this market).

The ones in school are older workers laid off and taking the initiative to retrain, and many in fields where we will need them such as health care.  Others are training to be teachers and in other public service fields.  What is the sense of cutting off the career retraining of so many?

Washington continues to be a ship of fools -- and I have to think that the captain of the ship could use his vaunted rhetorical skills to go to the country on this one . . . while his vice president who was picked for his knowledge of Congress sure isn't doing the job in this administration, either.

And it will get worse in other ways, as the economy and the awful Dem governor soon to step down are ensuring, say the polls, that we will elect a Repub governor this fall.

also, the 3D glasses always make me feel like I am going to barf so I would take them off every few minutes to let it pass.  when I did you could hardly tell it was in 3D.  I honestly dont think the effects stuff looked any better in 3D.  but I am obviously not a big fan.  I actually considered getting  up and going to the theater where it was not in 3D.

personally I am never paying to see another movie in 3D unless there is a really good reason.
