Thursday Night TV and Open Thread

Big Brother 12 begins tonight. There's a saboteur this season. (Update: I hope the female sheriff is the first to go. After that, the mensa guy.)I guess most people are watching LeBron make a decision.

The Emmy Award nominations are out (list of major awards here). I'm glad to see that Breaking Bad is up for Best Drama Series, Best Actor (Bryan Cranston) and Best supporting actor (Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman). And I'm really disappointed Mary Louise Parker and others from Weeds didn't get a nod. It should have gotten best comedy over Nurse Jackie. Nurse Jackie isn't funny, it's depressing, and the episodes are repetitious. Edie Falco can only do so much, and she can't carry the whole show.

Damages and the Good Wife picked up a few, and while I like Damages more, I have to say Archie Panjabi for best supporting actress in the Good Wife (the private investigator role) is a much better pick than Rose Byrne in Damages. Juliana Margolies is probably a shoo-in in best actress, particularly since Glenn Close didn't have much of a part this season in Damages, but Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad way deserves to win over Martin Short for Damages.

Jimmy Fallon will be host for the Aug. 29 show.

This is an open thread, all topics (tv related or not) are welcome.

So what did he decide? And why is it a big deal?

    still milking it. It's disgusting.

    It's not really important.

People are paying attention because LeBron is the most famous athlete in America.

shows up for Best Drama: Dexter.
In fact I see that in most categories I only watch one of the shows. Guess the odds I will see anyone I recognize on stage are slim to none.

I was hoping Jonathan Rhys Myers would get a nom for The Tudors this year. I thought he was exceptionally good portraying Henry as an aging man. I would still have wanted Michael C Hall to win however.

I didn't think Weeds was very good last season, so i'm not disappointed about that. Other years it should have swept though, so it is too bad it did not win more when it was a better show. I'll be pulling for Glee, though it is going to be tough with all the hype. I hope my anti-hype defenses don't overwhelm my love for the show. love Nurse Jackie too,so if the show and Edie win I'll be happy.

    and Lithgow for Dexter.

Other than that.....I think Modern Family and Breaking Bad will have good nights, from what I hear about those shows.

    So N.P.R. has announced that... (none / 0) (#11)

...they'll be known as NPR from now on.

This got me thinking - Have there been any really good new programs on public radio lately?  I think that most of the reliables are still on the air (like Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me; American Routes, etc., etc.) but I'm at a loss to think of any newer programs of note.  Have there been any new radio shows on NPR, PRI, APR (or wherever) that managed to just sort of come out of the blue and take off over the past few years?

That's the only one I can think of. I think 'On Point ' is pretty new, but I don't like it that much. Don't care for the host- she does that fake incredulous voice too often.

...with Slate.com, it was a serious effort at creating a new variation on traitional formats.

Unfortuntely, I think Day to Day was completely cancelled a year ago.

I think that 9/11 caused some severe long-term changes in radio listening habits here in the US, and public radio programming is still trying to recover.  But I don't have any independent documentation for that theory.

and people who now have Fannie and Freddie loans being threatened by the Obama administration if they took a look at the numbers where their mortgage is concerned and choose to walk away.  We have talked about this too.  We could not have been more careful or more responsible for self when we purchased our home.  But the bankers were making insane often fraudulent loans and really busted the markets and our whole economy.  We played by every rule in the book while nobody else in the equation was.

A mortgage is a collateralized loan. Commenter says that if the administration thinks they will take this route trying to strong arm Americans and beat them into submission and make them pay off the huge indebtedness that the bankers and Wall Street planted on all of us that an army of contractual lawyers are going beat them to death with it.

To the bank? lol....  I have to say that in this case the rich are doing the right thing. The NTY January writer was absolutely correct. Ruined credit ratings etc are over rated, obligations to banks that will stab you in the back and sell your children into slavery are misguided. F' those a$$holes. There is no honor or integrity in going down to keep a property that costs more than it is worth, particularly if you are ruining your life just to keep the bank's profit margin intact.

It is not an obligation it is a business deal. The deal is you do not pay your mtg and the bank gets the collateral, aka the property.

I didn't just fall off of the finance turnip truck.  It is a deal though.  I don't like not following through on my deals if it can be helped.  I dislike it so much I have sucked up many things and dug deep to uphold my part in many deals. This is not a character flaw in my opinion.  Maybe it is in yours.

If lenders feared an avalanche of strategic defaults, they would have an incentive to renegotiate loan terms. In theory, this could produce a wave of loan modifications -- the very goal the Treasury has been pursuing to end the crisis.

    Yes think of the children....

Brent White, a University of Arizona law professor, notes that a family who bought a three-bedroom home in Salinas, Calif., at the market top in 2006, with no down payment (then a common-enough occurrence), could theoretically have to wait 60 years to recover their equity. On the other hand, if they walked, they could rent a similar house for a pittance of their monthly mortgage.

    the hungry children.

But in any case people like you, who believe that walking from a bad mortgage deal is immoral, keep the banks in charge.

This is not a character flaw in my opinion.  Maybe it is in yours.

And continued. The feeling of "oblgation" to the bank is your problem, and one that you pride yourself in. And I have a character flaw because I feel zero allegiance to the banks

    Go figure.
