4 blocks from the bay. Lovely breezes {grin} I am on the warmer side of the bay, so about 10 degrees warmer than SF on average. The avg summer temp here should be around 78. I was avoiding the farther inland areas because I'm not happy with upper 80's and 90's plus temps. And I could give a fig that it's a dry heat, lol!~

We never hit 70 today. Stalled out at 67, but I'm not complaining. There's a lot of gravel down in the area my veggie garden is, so it tends to be warmer back there and has good reflected light for growing. I am looking forward to the warm up later this week. Should be mid 70's, which feels upper 70's/low low 80's in the garden sun. I'll be working and the dog will be lazying on the warm gravel :-P

Last visit to the dentist for this trip. (5.00 / 1) (#14)
by jeffinalabama on Tue Aug 10, 2010 at 03:38:37 PM EST
Fitted with a mouthpiece so I don't grind my teeth any more, in addition to cleaning, six cavities filled, some fillings replaced, and a replacement crown. Total cost was right at $700. Next year I'm getting an implant and starting (possibly finishing) reconstruction of at least my front teeth. Hey, I'll be a short, fat, balding gimp with BEAUTIFUL teeth!

I don't think I'll be continuing my dental insurance upon my return from Colombia, for some reason.

HEck, for all this dental work, I paid more 12 years ago for the crown I just replaced. It's worth it. I ought to advertise for them, maybe I could get free work, lol!

by vml68 on Wed Aug 11, 2010 at 10:13:59 AM EST
that I am ignorant/misinformed about a few issues.
Having worked at places that always offered medical/dental/vision, I assumed that all work places offered the same. The husband and I started making use of our insurance for the first time last year. We've both been extremely healthy so we did not even go for our free health/dental checkups till now.

I always thought our insurance was expensive, only to find out that it really is not. I was comparing coverages with my brother and he pays almost three times what we do for his and his is almost but not quite as good as ours.

Was also talking to someone who is going through fertility treatments and their insurance does not cover it. The prices are jaw dropping, anywhere from $15,000-25,000 per cycle. There are couples who are $100,000 or more in debt trying to have a baby. I have to admit I was stunned. And,I was extremely relieved to find out that should I have to go that route my insurance covers it 100%.

I felt a little guilty about it. Other than not being a big believer in the institution of marriage,I had also told my best friend (she is gay) that I would not get married till she could. So to get married to save a bundle on taxes was not exactly a proud moment for me. My friend never believed I would hold out so long, she thought it was hilarious that I did not cave in to pressure from my family and his all these years but caved in over tax savings. What that says about me I am not sure... :-0!

    this passed the house today.

"The House of Representatives passed a $26 billion measure Tuesday afternoon to help avoid teacher and emergency-responder layoffs"

"The measure, which passed the House on a largely party-line vote, is designed to save the jobs of approximately 160,000 teachers across the country, as well as create and save positions for police officers, firefighters and nurses, according to Democratic leaders.

Republican leaders have blasted that bill as an irresponsible union giveaway that will impede prospects for a long-term economic recovery"

emphasis mine.  Going to Obama's desk today.  Left vs. right stakes are high.  Today it means 160,000 fewer people out of work.

    Newtie's ex-wife (No 2) (5.00 / 1) (#39)
by jbindc on Tue Aug 10, 2010 at 04:50:12 PM EST
    Speaks out:

She sounds proud, defiant, maybe a little wistful. You might be inclined to think of what she says as the lament of an abandoned wife, but that would be a mistake. There is shockingly little bitterness in her, and she often speaks with great kindness of her former husband. She still believes in his politics. She supports the Tea Parties. She still uses the name Marianne Gingrich instead of going back to Ginther, her maiden name.

But there was something strange and needy about him. "He was impressed easily by position, status, money," she says. "He grew up poor and always wanted to be somebody, to make a difference, to prove himself, you know. He has to be historic to justify his life."

She says she should have seen the red flags. "He asked me to marry him way too early. And he wasn't divorced yet. I should have known there was a problem."

    Within weeks or months?

    "Within weeks."

    That's flattering.

She looks skeptical. "It's not so much a compliment to me. It tells you a little bit about him."

And he did the same thing to her eighteen years later, with Callista Bisek, the young congressional aide who became his third wife. "I know. I asked him. He'd already asked her to marry him before he asked me for a divorce. Before he even asked."

    He told you that?

"Yeah, he wanted to -- "

But she stops. "Hey, turn off the tape recorder for a second. This is going to go places ..."

Back in the 1990s, she told a reporter she could end her husband's career with a single interview. She held her tongue all through the affair and the divorce and even through the annulment Gingrich requested from the Catholic Church two years later, trying to erase their shared past. Now she sits quietly for a moment, ignoring her eggs, trying to decide how far she wants to go.

    SNIP

He thinks of himself as president, you tell her. He wants to run for president.

She gives a jaundiced look. "There's no way," she says. She thinks he made a choice long ago between doing the right thing and getting rich, and when you make those choices, you foreclose other ones. "He could have been president. But when you try and change your history too much, and try and recolor it because you don't like the way it was or you want it to be different to prove something new ... you lose touch with who you really are. You lose your way."

She stops, ashes her cigarette, exhales, searching for the right way to express what she's about to say.

"He believes that what he says in public and how he lives don't have to be connected," she says. "If you believe that, then yeah, you can run for president."

Sitting on a bench, she squints against the light. "He always told me that he's always going to pull the rabbit out of the hat," she says.

Gov. David Paterson (D) said today that if the developers behind the controversial Cordoba House agree to move their planned Muslim community center farther away from Ground Zero, he would "look into trying to provide them with the state property they would need."

At a press conference today, Paterson said that while he supports the Cordoba House and thinks the developers have a right to build it at the proposed site, he is "very sensitive to the desire of those who are adamant against it to see something else worked out."

In Sarah Palin Email Hacking Trial

The Smoking Gun has dug up some entertaining testimony from the trial of David Kernell, the 22 year-old hacker convicted of breaking in to then vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin's email in 2008.

Specifically, it's the testimony of Christopher 'Moot' Poole, founder and administrator of 4Chan, the image board on which Palin's password was posted.

    Q. Is there a certain language that is commonly used for users of 4chan?

    A. In what sense?

    Q. Certain terms have a meaning unique to 4chan?

    A. Troublemaker.

    Q. And the term "rickroll", you said it tries to make people go to a site where they think it is going to be one thing, but it is a video of Rick Astley, is that right?

NEW YORK -- New York City's transit agency has approved a bus advertisement that depicts a plane flying toward the World Trade Center's towers as they burn along with a rendering of a proposed mosque near ground zero.
The ad was paid for by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, an organization that opposes radical Islamic influence in the United States. The group's executive director says she doesn't find the ad offensive.

And, I hope that this stupid decision does not lead to violence, as we already have enough bias crime already, no need to stir more up.

The ad equates criminals with an entire religion.

Would the MTA approve an ad with a picture of Madoff wearing a skull cap and prayer shawl, holding, a bunch of money while laughing at NYers?

Or an overweight black woman lying on the couch with a crown on her head?  Just say no to lazy blacks?

last summer here there practically was no summer.  it was weirdly cool.  there was about three days at the end of the summer when it got over about 85.

this summer.  very very different story.  heat advisories practically every day for months now.

Last summer we had record smashing heat. This summer? Remarkable lack of heat. So bad that, unless we get an unusually awesome September, the tomatoes in my garden will mostly not ripen.

this year is very unusual, mostly because of the extraordinary amount of rainfall and low temps in May and June. It set the stage for a late-starting and slow-going gardening season.

July was actually fairly normal in terms of temps. The last few Julys have been unusually  hot. So, by comparison this July seems quite coolish. That said, yesterday (8/9) generally the "hottest" day of the year based on historical records, we barely reached the high '60s.

Crossing my fingers for that awesome September.

We had the same kind of summer last year, and if it hadn't been for all the fungal diseases, the tomatoes were fine.  Ripened a little later, but not by all that much.  It's that high sun angle that's most important, and the critical components of it come right through the overcast, too.

We've been significantly hotter than usual this summer, and my tomatoes are still mostly green.

my first summer here in 20yrs and I'm enjoying it, even more so when I check the temps (and humidity) of my old hood :)

Was in Napa last night. Plan on making many more trips up and around there. Good to know it should be a good vintage yr :)

fungal pressures from the cool moist weather, for most growers it'll be a great year. Can't wait.

is a desireable factor in making a specific style of sweet white desert wines, mainly. Powdery mildew, however, loves coolish-wetish weather and will ruin the actual grapes. If the growers keep up with their anti-fungal sprays, they should be fine.

Veeery generally, the most flavorful grapes are gotten when the climate is so cool that the grapes only barely are able to get ripe.

Has it really been that moist? (none / 0) (#56)

They get more sun than I do, and my garden is doing pretty darn good, though a bit slow on the tomato ripening. My LL a couple blocks away is doing better in that respect. I think she has better sun though (less tree blockage :) ) I was worried about powdery mildew early on when the rains weren't stopping, but now even though we have the fog, moisture doesn't seem to be an issue as we get enough sun during the day. Napa is about 20 minutes up the road from me and some grapes are growing much closer, and they def have warmer temps and less fog. I should mention I'm only a about 4 blocks from the bay/marina.

Gotta tell ya, having no AC and no need for it effin' rocks! Plus good sleeping weather every night!
