Sunday Open Thread: Detroit's Kid Rock Turns 40

45,000 fans turned out last night at Ford Field in Detroit to help Kid Rock celebrate his 40th birthday.

I liked the part of the clip (at 2:33) when a fan puts something on the stage, he bends down to pick it up, looks at it, and puts in his back pocket. Doesn't miss a beat. At 2:42, he asks the crowd how they feel, and he yells back, "I feel f**cking great" and then launches back into "All Summer Long" -- "We were trying different things, we were smoking funny things...Sweet home Alabama." (Thanks to MLive for not blocking censoring it.)

Kid Rock is a great personal ambassador for the city. But in their day, so were the MC5 (Kick out the Jams); Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Bob Seger, Commander Cody, and even Alice Cooper.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

I always like posts about Detroit. I lived there in the 80's and would move back in a second.

    A great city.

Commander Cody wouldn't have gotten where he did without them.  Being DFH's, they were out of Ann Arbor ('67), not Detroit and were out in SF by '70.

Star-Making Machinery, which chronicled the band during the recording, production and marketing of the band's first album, Lost in the Ozone, was one of the texts for my History of Rock n' Roll class.  A great behind the scenes look at the recording industry.

/MC5 is the greatest proto-punk band ever.

Per the debate about whether or not U.S. inflation figures could even be trusted at this point (which I don't feel that they can be...the man behind the curtain is manipulating everything at this point), leading investor Jim Rogers comes out attacking U.S. inflation figures and calls them a sham.

    ...for avian themed NFL teams.

The Falcons get crushed by the Pack, the RatBirds can't hold a lead and lose to the Steelers ("its all the refs fault, hon") and the Seahawks go down in the snow and cold of the Second City--no Beast Mode today.

But it looks like another airborne team, the Jets, will survive to the next round.

I have been reinforcing my bird's 'screeching'. It sounds similar to me screaming "yes. yes. Yes!!!" as the plays are happening. BUT! I have been trying to turn it into J-E-T-S Jets Jets JETS! If they keep winning, I may have a winning screech with my bird (one I can live with!) :)

assuming they beat Chicago, that is...

Worst possible scenario is to know that one of two teams one absolutley cannot stand will be playing in the Super Bowl, so here's hoping Aaron Rodgers can win one more and I can root for them to beat whoever wins the AFC.

As for your aside about officiating, the best games for me are the ones where the refs let the teams play the game, where they don't feel like they have to make sure their own - and generally inconsistent - judgment trumps everything.  There have been too many games this year where bad calls that, in real time and in later review,  were clearly wrong made the difference between wins and losses.

Just get out of the way and let the teams play - or - make officiating a full-time job where bad decisions are subject to fines or suspension.

your Ravens choked away the early lead and the game...I know Sexy Rexy wanted a piece of B'more after choosing Harbaugh over him.

    no Mark Sanchez, kdog...

I've been a big defender of Flacco, but I am starting to wonder about his ability to make decisions, about his awareness in the pocket, his ability to read the field.  After three full seasons of being the QB, I think he ought to be farther along than he is.  I don't get it - last week against KC we had a great game plan and the offense - and Joe Flacco - executed it and had possession for over 40 minutes - we actually played a 60-minute game.

So, is it Joe, or is it Cam Cameron's play calling (Rice up the middle for 2 yards, Rice up the middle for no gain, checkdown pass play for 5 yards, punt)?  I felt like the Ravens played scared against the Steelers, and if not for the Pittsburgh mistakes in the first half, would the Ravens have been able to score?

Then again, our great veteran weapons on offense couldn't seem to catch passes that were thrown right to them; both Boldin and Houshmandzadeh dropped passes that were right on the numbers, at critical times - so that's not Joe, that's on them.

Argh.  I guess it is what it is, and whether there are any coaching changes in the offing, and whether that would make things better - who knows?  I heard a rumor that Brad Childress might be in line to take Cameron's job - and that worries me.   A lot.

One thing's for sure - it'll be Jets or Steelers in the Super Bowl; if I had to choose which team would go to the SB, I suppose I would reluctantly favor NY over Pittsburgh, but by a hair so fine you'd need a microscope to see it.  I'm pretty sure I will be rooting for Green Bay or Chicago, though, regardless of which AFC team is playing.

kick off too due to the inflated prices of food and fuel.  This is due to Ben Bernanke's Quantitative Easing, investors are running to commodities...the poor of the world will starve because Wall Street will not take the defaults and take the corrections.  All the smart money knows that the only thing worth anything is commodities and all the smart money has ALL THE MONEY because we gave it to them so they could trickle it down.  It is more profitable to starve us though at this time.
