    Started learning Catalan today. (5.00 / 2) (#4)
by jeffinalabama on Thu Jan 06, 2011 at 05:36:08 PM EST
a linguist acquaintance from Romania married a fellow in Barcelona, so we're IM'ing in Catalan. My acquaintance already spoke US English, French, Spanish and Romanian before moving to Catalonia. She also speaks passable Italian.

Her father was a linguiat for Romania during the Warsaw Pact years. He speaks Russian, Ukranian and German, and if I recall correctly, Magyar and Polish, or Magyar and Czech.

What an incredible and interesting family. Eleven different languages in two people. I'm an old dog trying to get caught up. I've been told that if I wanted to teach US English in Barcelona, I'd have an easy time getting a high school position.

Ahhh, the idea of moving there... just an idea, but possibly a years' exchange, that might be nice.

Anyone been to Barcelona? My acquaintance told me Catalan will 'make me dizzy.'

Barcelona (or Bar-the-lona) has a verve. Envigorating even in its age. With port and wonderful coast nearby, and mountains not too far away.... An architectural and design hub; and, good zarzuela too.

We only spent a few days there in the late 90s, but the memory of sights, sounds, and Mediterranean food remains strong & warm.

A friend of mine has a daughter living there (and raising a son now 15.) I saw the daughter--who was visiting her mother in Denver in recent weeks--and she still remains happy with the living arrangement after several years as well as with the position that combines high tech plus English teaching. Also: The son was here, and he is doing quite well after earlier quick immersion in Catalan.

    I envy you the opportunity.

only a tourist's knowledge but fun to just walk Las Ramblas, the famous boulevard, and to take in the unique architecture of Antoni Gaudi, including the museum, and, of course, to see the still unfinished Sagrada Familia.

For the third day in a row, while up at the pool, I've been treated to a young hawk/falcon showing off its acrobatics amongst the buildings.  Most excellent.

A marked decrease in the number of pigeons around as an added side benefit.

/off to put a kiddie pool stocked with fat, tasty trout on the roof

It's still by far the winningest football program in history, and would be a feather in the cap of any career if someone could come in and get things going again in Ann Arbor.

My two sons-in-law are Michigan diehards.  During Richrod's 1st year I told them that winning 10 or so games every year isn't a birth right.

They looked at me as though I had an extra eye in the middle of my forehead.

When I told them that Lloyd Carr was a fine coach they grimaced then snapped that he hadn't beaten Ohio State in X years.  He's got to go.

Out with him.  Carr actually deigned to lose 3 games in a season a few times.

Finally when I told them that after Carr was gone so was 38 years of continuity they looked at me as though I were ready for a rest home.  Thirty-eight years, what in hell could that possibly mean.  What's this continuity thing anyway.  What difference does that make.

They also insisted that Harbaugh would automatically take the Michigan job if Richrod was fired.  They looked forward to ousting Richrod, their savior was in a holding pattern at Stanford pining for a chance to return Michigan to glory.  Today Harbaugh signed with the 49ers.

by lentinel on Thu Jan 06, 2011 at 07:46:47 PM EST
I just saw the film, "Conviction".

Maybe Jeralyn has mentioned it, but I had not heard about it.

It dramatizes the wrongful conviction of a man who served 18 years in a Massachusetts prison. He was freed thanks to the tireless efforts of his sister who became a lawyer and successfully obtained DNA evidence that exonerated her brother.

Hillary Swank gave a performance as the sister and lawyer that I will never forget.

Astounding in every way, this film.

    It's official! (Maybe) (none / 0) (#17)

The Enquirer (which first broke the story of the affair) is reporting that John Edwards is engaged to Rielle Hunter!

    Stay tuned folks!

It isn't any of my business, but I can't help it and I think this is horrible.  Ms. Hunter gives me the creeps, the other children's mother is barely cold in her grave.  I hate this
