Off to Key West and Open Thread

>

It's time for Key West and the 29th annual NORML Legal Conference. For those who haven't been to Key West, also known as the Conch Republic, it is a tiny treasure only 4 miles long, 2 miles wide and 90 miles from Cuba. It is the southernmost point in the U.S. and about as laid back as you can get. There's lots of pirates. And you can't beat the weather.

Big Tent Democrat will be around, I may pop in now and then, and we'll have our usual open threads like this one, all topics welcome.

If you get the chance and want a wonderful beach while you are down there, the drive to Bahia Honda State Park is more than worth it.

Has the First Amendment expired in your public square?  Has your local park prioritized empty vistas over the right to petition your government for a redress of grievances, thereby adding one more grievance to the list?

Here's a proposal. Pack up all of your grievances in a bag and bring them to where the government responsible is located.  Move your protest and yourself and as much of your Occupy community as you can bring with you to Freedom Plaza -- http://occupywashingtondc.org -- or McPherson Square -- http://occupydc.org -- in Washington, D.C.  You need not bring anything else.  Together we can keep the DC occupations sheltered and fed and supplied with resources.

It had to begin in San Francisco, the center of hippie culture, of course.

SAN FRANCISCO -- While Occupy Wall Street protestors rail against the economic elite a new breed of Internet startups is out to overthrow big businesses as rulers of the marketplace.

Entrepreneurs are catering to a new generation that would rather share cars than own them; sleep in spare bedrooms instead of haughty hotels, or raise capital from peers instead of borrowing from banks.

"We are at the start of an ownership revolution," said Rachel Botsman, whose successful book What's Mine is Yours showcases a technology-driven shift to "collaborative consumption."

"We don't want the DVD, we want the music," she continued. "We don't want cars, we want to get from A to B. There is a generation growing up that has a whole different relationship to ownership."

    [snip]

"The way people live and do things is changing," Busque said.

"We are on the brink of a major groundswell of peer-to-peer marketplaces shifting the way things happen."

    VC's.  And I'm not a big fan.

But, in their defense, they are taking a risk.  And though I've never encountered a 90% deal, the percentages can be very high.

However, if the company takes off the founders generally do quite well.  And if it doesn't (the more common outcome) the founders aren't facing huge debts.

Former Arapahoe County Sheriff Patrick Sullivan was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of trying to trade drugs to a man for sex, as investigators monitored the deal.

Drug task-force officers were "visually monitoring" the deal when the 68-year-old former national Sheriff of the Year delivered methamphetamine to an Aurora home and sought sex in return, said current Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson.

The supercommittee, a sort of homeopathic version of a legislative body, a thing, reduced to its essence and then placed near a vial of water whose molecules were supposed to realign and magically cure what ails us, or, ahem, whatever, failed.

    [snip]

It remains a matter of faith that the purpose of government is the endless promulgation of new rules; literally, it can never end.  It's the equivalent of "growth" in economics--not a temporary condition, merely descriptive, sometimes desirable and sometimes not, but rather a universal state of being whose absence equals non-existence.  There is no possibility of equilibrium, no rest, and no balance.  The universe is a series of endless crises to be combated with endless proclamations.  If Congress is not at every moment making something new illegal and something presently illegal legal again, then it is a failure.

    [snip]

If you can think of yourself as a human being instead of a citizen or a subject, then it is a horror.

not so quietly into the night.  Funny article in the globe today by By Matt Viser and Christopher Rowland, can't link to it since you need a subscription, but here are some choice quotes:

``I'll be honest: I will make a lot of money,'' Frank said. ``I will talk less than I used to and get paid much more for it.''

    On Newt Gingrich:

``He's awful; he's a despicable human being,'' Frank said. ``He has no core philosophically; he's no different from Mitt Romney in that regard. But also, totally worse than Mitt, he would go after people, he would lie about them, these tactics of destruction. I think he's just one of the worst people that I know of who didn't commit violence against somebody.''

``Grumpy is no way to spend your retirement,'' said Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond, in response.

    On technology:

``Yeah, I got to learn how to use a computer,'' he said. ``I know what a computer can do, but I've had my staff do it for me. I have to get proficient . . . particularly word processing.''

``Personally I don't get e-mails, because they are a nuisance,'' he said. ``Why would I want to get a personal e-mail? I would get buried with people bothering me.''
