A First Hand Account of Solitary Confinement

Sarah Shourd, one of three American hikers detained in Iran, describes her year in solitary confinement in the Iranian prison in the New York Times. It's very depressing, but a good reminder that extended solitary confinement is torture.

    takes a very strong and resilient mind, I would think. Good for Shourd. She seems well on her way to recovering her sanity.

    I imagine many would snap almost irrecoverably. Including some of the jailers?

    How many in Gitmo have been in solitary for years, and tortured on top of the torture of solitary?
