March Madness Day 3

8 games today and tomorrow for a trip to the Sweet Sixteen. Here are my picks:

Temple +6 over San Diego State (2 units.) SDSU has good athletes but I do not think they can hold up on this stage. Temple, playing with no pressure, having won a nailbiter in the first round, seems poised to not only cover the spread, but to win outright.

More . . .

Butler +8 over Pittsburgh (2 units.) Neither team impresses me offensively (Pitt is a stellar defensive team). Butler is scrappy and should keep it close. Pitt finds a way to win probably.

Kentucky -4 over West Virginia (3 units.) John Calipari is a terrible basketball coach. Really terrible. Last year, he had one of the most talented teams in recent history and could not even get them to the Final 4, losing to a much inferior West Virginia team. Here we go again? Kentucky looked terrible against Princeton. However, they seem to be better in tight games than before. This Kentucky team comes nowhere close to last year's team. But they will beat West Virginia today. Handily.

Richmond -4 over Morehead St. (7 units.) Cinderella vs. Cinderella? I think not. Richmond is much superior to Morehead. This line is off by 5 points. Love Richmond in this spot. Best bet today.

Kansas State +3 (3 units) over Wisconsin. Crazy Cuban (redundant?) Frank Martin righted the Wildcat ship towards the end of the season, including an impressive win at Texas. Pullen is one of the best players in the country. And I'm getting points against Wisconsin? Trap line? I'm putting 3 units on K-State plus the points.

UCLA +5½ over Florida. (3 units). Too many points. Gators have won nailbiters all year.

Connecticut -4 over Cincinnati (6 units.) UConn beat Cincy in Cincy on February 27 BEFORE going on the great run they are on now. This is a terrible matchup for Cincy, as they do not shoot well enough to give UConn trouble (a la Notre Dame and West Virginia). Second best play of the day.

Gonzaga -1½ over BYU (5 units.) The Zags are on a roll. BYU is hanging on. Yet the pressure and attention is on BYU. Zags in a walk.

Let Go Gators!

    Frank Martin is an idiot.

So I Calipari, so I hope he goes down.

SDSU, you are right, is all about if they can handle the nerves.  My hunch is they got them all out with that first win. Remember, Tent, this is a team that got shipped to Providence last year and took Tennessee (a game away from the Final Four last year) to the final seconds.  I think they've been here enough now to overcome the jitters.

I like Gonzaga over BYU, as well.

Richmond has one problem, named Kenneth Faried.  He dominated inside against Louisville, and he should also do the same here.  Love this game, I'll take Morehead, what the hell.

    UConn wins big.

I think UCLA will overcome your Gators.

I like Butler, too, although Pitt's D is phucking stifling when it's on.

    Go Aztecs!

    Calipari vs. Huggins (none / 0) (#2)

Two a-holes matched up.  Is there any way they can both lose?

Well, it's Part I of the 68. I agree with most of it....

The Zags lack of defense (none / 0) (#13)

just made Wofford's defense look really good. With the Gators up next, looks like my two favorite teams both get their shot at Jimmer.

the big east is as overrated (none / 0) (#14)

in basketball, as the SEC is in football. so far, the A-10 and the CAA are giving them a run for their money.

whilst i remain in a deep, black depression over ODU's loss to Butler, Butler beating Pitt has raised my spirits somewhat.

This one really surprised me (none / 0) (#15)

Didn't see the game, so I have no idea what happened to Gonzaga.  They got Jimmer'd?

Aztecs in the Sweet 16 just up I-5 in Anaheim. Should be a home game for them.  But they always have me worried.  They just seem to get too wound up.  And Steve Fisher is lucky he got the W, after having two last shots to win it, and coming out of timeouts with NOTHING resembling a good play, I dunno, not his finest moments as a coach.

But it's on to the erstwhile Pond, and UConn or Cincy.
