the new HBO movie about the 1971 PBS experiment in reality tv involving the Doud family from Santa Barbara -- is well worth a viewing.

I recall seeing some of the episodes in the early 70s when first aired but I was either too busy in school (no tv in the dorms in those days) or didn't find it compelling enough for consistent weekly watching.  Probably too young also -- still in my teens -- to appreciate some of the adult dynamics going on.  I think I always picked up on how the family seemed self-conscious about the cameras, or how it would have been impossible to live as a family normally does and not adjust accordingly, and so suspected there was something at least partially scripted or staged.

Still, quite an unusual television experiment for the time.  It would also be interesting to see the entire Loud family appearance on the Dick Cavett Show in 1973, which I missed back then.  YT has some snippets.

The HBO movie gets 3 out of 4 stars from our tv critics.

Watched the HBO movie last night too (5.00 / 1) (#26)

It was good - what a strange story all the way around. I was too young at the time to appreciate it, but I do recall all of the publicity and wondering why any family would do that. My own family was going through turmoil at the time and I thought the Louds sounded pretty tame.

Well done film though - loved seeing all the clothes and the hair. Really brought back some fashion memories. Very authentic, as you would expect given that they had actual footage to work from.

I do not believe the Good Book refers to multiple antichrist personages, only one, THE antichrist.  I mean, come on Franky, if you start having Tom, Dick & and Harriet antichrists on every other street corner, then you completely dilute their value.  This is just good old fashioned free market demonology, don'tcha know?

too good when some of the Nixon tapes came out that showed the Rev engaging in some antisemitic conversation with Dick.  But, at least he apologized and asked for forgiveness and otherwise thereafter didn't seem quite as far to the right as his son has turned out to be.

aren't quite the major political-social force they once were, back when the Rev Billy would visit the WH, starting with Ike iirc, and every president since then would have to suck up to him, either for an endorsement of policy or for a general photo-op in the Oval Office.  The more right-leaning televangelists began taking over the leading Graham position sometime around Reagan, and I don't think son Franklin has ever reached dad Billy's stature.

I just wish normally smart people like Christy Anne Amanpour would stop enabling these idiots and bigots.  (Obama too, with his Rev Rick ...)

    from the San Francisco Chronicle:

    OAKLAND

    Clown jailed over blackmail

A Redwood City man who tried to pick up blackmail money from his immigrant relatives while dressed in a clown suit has been sentenced to three years in prison for passing himself off as a federal immigration agent.

A federal jury convicted Frank Salvador Solorza, 46, of conspiracy, impersonating an immigration officer and attempted extortion. At a hearing in Oakland on Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton ordered Solorza to begin serving a three-year sentence in 45 days.

Solorza was arrested in February 2009 after he arrived at a home in San Mateo County on a child's bicycle - while dressed in a clown suit, a clown glitter wig and a Pirates of the Caribbean hat (complete with dreadlocks) - and grabbed a briefcase that he believed contained $50,000 he had demanded as the price for not having his relatives deported, authorities said.

Solorza is a cousin of the alleged victims, who emigrated from Mexico. The father of four said three Norteño gang members had put him up to the scam.

The "computer generated" record is sufficient...

BTW, I am not a "birther" but do question why the left went balls to the wall for GWB's National Guard, Yale and Harvard records but won't ask about the Occidential, Columbia and Harvard records relating to BHO.

Before you even start, (as stated above) he was born in HI, but why the secrecy of all subsequent records?

I salute your father's service and honorably respect your loss.

If not for about 2 years difference in birth dates, would have been in the draft pool for VN.

However, that does not answer the question of why the left was hell bent on digging through GWB's records (military and collegiate) yet turn a blind eye to Obama's records.

Goose and Gander springs to mind.

Elect better Representatives, Senators and Governors. Re-elect the President. In 2016, nominate a candidate to the left of BHO on all issues. Do the same for all elected offices at every level. Make phone calls, attend town hall meetings and make your voice heard.

reelecting Obama will probably make it less likely that you can get a candidate "to the left" or any candidate to win in 2016. If Obama is reelected, you need to shoot for the presidency in 2020 since rarely has a two term presidency been followed by a president of the same party.
