    My contract is still pending. I just called one of my contacts and found that everybody's contract is delayed---provost has been traveling, one of the operating officers has a family health problem--- but he also saw that my offer had been approved by the provost.
    So it looks like I'm still going, but obviously I won't make it by Aug. 29, when classes are supposed to start. I have to get a special visa before I can even fly over there, and I haven't been contacted about that at all.

    and best wishes for a happy day and an equally happy and successful year; it's not always easy for us Virgos to really cut loose and get a little wild, but do your best!

    My age doesn't really bother me, but when I turned 50, I jokingly said I was celebrating the 20th anniversary of my 30th birthday, and that method has kind of stuck - although at some point, I may have to rethink that, since even the "anniversaries" are adding up, lol.  This year, it's the 28th anniversary of birthday no. 30.

    I'll know the whole age thing is getting to me if I have to start lying about how old my kids are - 28 and almost-25.

    Pulls no punches when talking about Eric Schneiderman being the lone AG holding out on a deal between the banksters and the government.

    In Schneiderman we have at least one honest investigator who doesn't agree, which is to his great credit. But everyone else is on Wylde's side now. The Times story claims that HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan and various Justice Department officials have been leaning on the New York AG to cave, which tells you that reining in this last rogue cop is now an urgent priority for Barack Obama.

    Why? My theory is that the Obama administration is trying to secure its 2012 campaign war chest with this settlement deal. If Barry can make this foreclosure thing go away for the banks, you can bet he'll win the contributions battle against the Republicans next summer.

    Which is good for him, I guess. But it seems to me that it might be time to wonder if is this the most disappointing president we've ever had.

    Of course, if I remember correctly, Matt Taibbi was one of those who helped sell us this individual for president, was he not?

    Taibbi stood in 2008.  What is more important to me is that he has been doing yeoman's work ever since.  His reporting has been consistently honest (blunt and direct, actually) where ever his attention has gone.  He has "pulled no punches" for quite a long time.

    Don't always have the same interpretion that he does but I very much respect his skills.  In fact a few days ago I was listening to him on NPR and it occurred to me that he is as close as this "day and age" gets to Seymour Hersch.  YMMV

    That he's doing this now.  Better late than never, I guess.

    But it just makes me angry all over again when, if he and others who actually take journalism seriously, had done their jobs, we would be in a whole different situation.  Even if Obama had still come through the primaries and won, and won the election - he would have actually toughened up and been ready to take on the job.  All the fawning and no-questioning did not do him any good and certainly didn't do us any good.

    The 1964 Republican Party Platform - ahhh...bring back Barry Goldwater.

    Some of thier complaints with the Johson administration:

    This Administration has adopted the policies of news management and unjustifiable secrecy, in the guise of guarding the nation's security; it has shown a contempt of the right of the people to know the truth.

    This Administration, while claiming major defense savings, has in fact raised defense spending by billions of dollars a year, and yet has short-changed critical areas.

    SNIP

    This Administration has failed to honor its pledges to assure good jobs, full prosperity and a rapidly growing economy for all the American people:

    --failing to reduce unemployment to four percent, falling far short of its announced goal every single month of its tenure in office; and

    --despite glowing promises, allowing a disheartening increase in long-term and youth unemployment.

    SNIP

    This Administration has impeded investigations of suspected wrongdoing which might implicate public officials in the highest offices in the land. It has thus aroused justifiable resentment against those who use the high road of public service as the low road to illicitly acquired wealth.

    And then - some of the things they pledged to do:

    --tax credits and other methods of assistance to help needy senior citizens meet the costs of medical and hospital insurance;

    --a strong, sound system of Social Security, with improved benefits to our people;

    --continued Federal support for a sound research program aimed at both the prevention and cure of diseases, and intensified efforts to secure prompt and effective application of the results of research. This will include emphasis on mental illness, drug addiction, alcoholism, cancer, heart disease and other diseases of increasing incidence;

    --revision of the Social Security laws to allow higher earnings, without loss of benefits, by our elderly people;

    --full coverage of all medical and hospital costs for the needy elderly people, financed by general revenues through broader implementation of Federal-State plans, rather than the compulsory Democratic scheme covering only a small percentage of such costs, for everyone regardless of need;

    --tax credits for those burdened by the expenses of college education;

    --vocational rehabilitation, through cooperation between government--Federal and State--and industry, for the mentally and physically handicapped, the chronically unemployed and the poverty-stricken;

    --incentives for employers to hire teenagers, including broadening of temporary exemptions under the minimum wage law.

    Too bad even Democrats don't fight for this stuff anymore.

    Nothing is more important than balancing the budget with the least increase in taxes. The Federal Government should be in such position that it will need issue no securities which increase the public debt after the beginning of the next fiscal year, July 1. That is vital to the still further promotion of employment and agriculture. It gives positive assurance to business and industry that the Government will keep out of the money market and allow industry and agriculture to borrow the monies required for the conduct of business. digby

    You have no idea what was going in Flanagan's life. You have only a comment from the police. And Flanagan is not here to confirm or deny.

    Suicide is a desperate act, committed by desperate people who have come to the conclusion that they have no other viable options. That is the tragedy, that people come to a point where suicide is, in their mind,  the reasonable action.

    It is horrible for his family and friends. And my heart goes out to them.

    I listened to Tim Kurkjian of ESPN on the radio this afternoon who described Mike Flanagan as intelligent, funny, and his closest friend among players in the game from the first day he met him. As a Tim Kurkjian fan, I especially enjoyed reading his thoughts on Flanny that he penned this afternoon.

    grocery store as his home is about 2 miles from mine; last time I saw him, he and his daughter were actually in line ahead of me, and he was having some kind of problem with his "bonus" card (for every 100 points, you get 10 cents off each gallon of gas at Shell), and he was so apologetic for holding me up - I assured him it was no big deal, and we joked about whether I might end up with his bonus points.

    People in the Baltimore area, the people who knew him, worked with him, played with him, are, as you might expect, having a really hard time with this.  He always had time for the fans, never acted irritated when people would come up to talk to him.  This speaks to what kind of person he was, and that he took his own life doesn't change that.

    I don't think it's up to us to judge what he did or why he did it; for one thing, we're coming from - at least I hope we are - a place of functional, rational thought, and those who choose to end their lives are not.

    I, too, feel terrible for his wife and children, who will be wracked with guilt for years to come.  Everyone who called him their friend will be doing the same thing.

    Selfish?  I guess he didn't think so, but then, I'm pretty sure he wasn't thinking rationally.

    He will be greatly missed in the community.

    I think the one thing that has to be (5.00 / 2) (#99)
    by Anne on Fri Aug 26, 2011 at 07:12:37 AM EST
    true for all of us is that the person we see in the mirror, and the one who lives in our heads,  is not always the one others see when they look at us.  I have yet to hear a single person have a bad thing to say about Mike Flanagan, and yet, it's clear that he didn't see what they saw, or feel what they felt, about himself.

    As more bits and pieces emerge, it's starting to become clear that he had been struggling for a while, and I think, like a lot of people going through emotional turmoil, maybe there's one thing that starts the downward spiral, but other things tend to go along for the ride - especially if someone keeps thinking they can deal with it on their own - which may not have been the case with Flanny - he may very well have sought help, I don't know.

    It's just hard to put one's head in a place where one could truly understand how bad things would have to be, how bad one would have to be feeling, that ending one's life would seem like the best solution to whatever is going on.

    That's a level of pain I hope I hope no one I love and care about - and that includes me - ever experiences, and I certainly would not wish the aftermath of guilt, regret and blame that follows something like this on anyone.

    This is a paragraph from LAT article on Gov. Brown's proposal to give a tax break to companies hiring in CA and companies buying CA equipment (maybe mfg. elsewhere?). Your commenter cannot link via Blackberry. Sorry.

    i love Arthur Silber's blog:

    1. Arthur is smart
    2. Arthur is a good writer
    3. Arthur is uncompromisingly, incisively, cogently leftist
    4. Arthur doesn't allow comments

    Arthur needs help, if you have a few $ to spare.

    containing elements of federal forfeiture laws, federal stings and support/enforcement of Bush's Medicare drug scam.

    Makes me wonder how many of the "dangerous" foreign Rx drug suppliers we were being warned about several years ago when folks were travleing to Canada for Rx drugs were in fact fronts, "phony drug selling websites" of the sort created in this sting operations. Got to alos love the use by the Feds of a guy who had been involved "in an unrelated multimillion-dollar Internet fraud."

    Oh well, at least there's now hundreds of millions more for law enforcement efforts.

    "Google, officials said, was on notice as early as 2003 about the illegal sales and repeatedly was warned to stop the advertising by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy."

    Warned not by the Goverment, but the Nat'l Assoc. of Boards of Pharmacy. Who are they and who do they represent?  I wonder.

    If Google was posting ads from disreputable foreign suppliers why then did the Feds needs to create 7 dummy drug selling websites and involve this person charged with an unrelated felony to nab Google?  Seems to me they would have already had what they needed based on the NABP complaints, if they were accurate.
