Monday Night Open Thread: DWTS, Can Nancy and Chas Dance?

DWTS begins tonight. Nancy Grace looks like she has had a bit of a makeover already, maybe it's just the spray tan, but she looks better. Can she dance? We'll find out. (I wonder if the pro cast had a say in their partners. Nancy's paired with a new cast member, maybe none of the regulars wanted to dance with her?) How will Chas do? Great I hope. I wonder if they will go last so we have to watch all the others too.

Breaking Bad was terrific last night, Gus vs. Don Eladio and Jesse steps up. If you missed it because of the lamest Emmy's ever, catch it On Demand or on AMC's website. There's also a new episode of Weeds tonight.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome. [More below]

Update: Netflix is taking a media beating for splitting its DVD and streaming business. The CEO Reed Hastings took to the Netflix blog to explain and apologize for the "suddenness" of the decision announcement. Anytime a CEO begins with "I messed up" he has my attention. I appreciate his response and don't mind logging on to two websites. I also think he's right to concentrate on streaming which is the future. Netflix needs to up its game in that department, Xfinity gets the new movies sooner. If it could match or beat their timing, it would be much more economical. DVD's have too many previews, and it's hard to fast forward through them. But they are valuable for movies and tv's you missed the first time around or are outside the top 40 of the day. So I'm keeping both subscriptions.

Nancy Grace wasn't awful. But she needs to stop talking about the courtroom. She hasn't been a practicing lawyer for 14 or 15 years. She's a pundit turned talk show host. She won't be the first one going home.

Update: Entertainment Tonight's reporter needs to learn to count, pay attention or both. There were 12 couples dancing. Contrary to his report, Nancy Grace did not land "in the middle of the pack" but in the lower 1/3, with 16 (5+5+6 = 16.) Only two people did worse than her. And Elizabeth Canalis, George Clooney's girlfriend, did not get an 18 but a 15 (5 + 5 + 5 = 15.)

is is name. I had to look it up, never heard of him or seen him before. He was energetic. I think Chynna Phillips and Kristin Cavalieri will be the ones to battle it out, possibly with the female athlete whose name I can't remember. George Clooney's ex wasn't very good and Rob Kardashian is really obnoxious but Carrie liked him so he'll probably stay a while.

He was my favorite on 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy'. So funny, and a heart of gold. I miss that show. It was oddly touching. They helped those guys with a lot more than their decorating and manscaping.

Yes, thank god DADT is gone. (5.00 / 4) (#6)

We are what, 40 minutes into a no-DADT military, and so far no reports of a collapse of unit cohesion or the destruction of military discipline or the end of morale.

Heterosexual troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have not laid down their arms and refused to fight because the gays in their units stopped lying about their personal lives.

So far, it's All Quiet on the Openly Gay in the Military Front.

Fox News (not) has dispatched hundreds of "reporters" (sludge dwellers) across the seven continents and five oceans (and rumor has it that a few have been placed in orbit also) to lay in wait for that first dispute between a hetero & gay soldier somewhere on this earth (and beyond) for that inevitable "BREAKING NEWS!"

Let's have a lottery for when Fox "breaks" the earth shattering news:......."discord in the Armed Services as gays and straights Clash!"

    It is sad (5.00 / 2) (#8)

when I think about the environment in the war zones under the Bush administration and all the rapes they tried to cover up or ignore.  It was a crime in the military to be gay, but not necessarily to rape someone.  Very sad memories of how Republican leadership hates both women who tell and gays who tell.

When Iraq kicked off it seemed like (5.00 / 1) (#11)
by Militarytracy on Tue Sep 20, 2011 at 08:15:55 AM EST
the cover ups became epidemic.  Everyone was so afraid of other things.  I remember when you guys first went in, everyone was afraid that chemical weapons were going to be used.  It seemed like under all that chaos and terror a lot of things happened that nobody wanted to deal with.  It felt like because people were dying, we didn't have time to acknowledge the rape problem.  Salon and Ms. Magazine both did write ups on it.

I remember reading the Salon article (none / 0) (#16)
by republicratitarian on Tue Sep 20, 2011 at 09:17:08 AM EST
Again, saying that the covers ups were epidemic doesn't seem correct. I don't see any evidence of cover ups at all. There is only one mention of a cover up in either of those articles, and it deserves the attention it gets.

Was there a problem? yes. Was it addressed? yes. Is it still being addressed? yes. It always will be. I'm sure your husband can attest to this, the military gets more training on Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention now than it ever did before. There are unit victim advocates now, hot lines, and anonymous reporting that weren't there before.
We actually went through our annual training on it this last weekend.

There were obviously issues during the Bush administration, but they were addressed (and still are being addressed) and that started us on the path that we are on today. I guess I just didn't agree with the cover up comment or equating that environment under Bush with being gay in the military and the repeal of DADT. Sorry if I got long winded about that.

properly addressed at all.  I'm sorry all this is hard for you to hear.  In 2008 the DOD released their horrifying stats on their own study that said 1 in 3 female soldiers would be raped by her fellow soldiers.  The military was grindingly slow addressing what was happening.  Don't you find it odd that whenever we have Republican leadership it changes what the I.G. considers important and addresses?  I do, and raping women in the military when George W. Bush was President was a huge problem.

    I do think this administration (none / 0) (#20)
by Militarytracy on Tue Sep 20, 2011 at 09:34:57 AM EST
cares.  I'm sick of how the climate and the rules change and horrible things are okay to happen within the military though whenever we get a Republican President. It is shameful.  It is horrible.

We were talking this morning about the DADT change, and how the next time we get a Republican President they may work very hard to find a way to harm gays in the military if possible.  They used DADT to say that finally they had something on the books that made it illegal to be gay in the United States military.  They twist, they use, they cover up, they damage people, and I'm determined to remember it all because I'm tired of repeating it.

It's not hard for me to hear at all (none / 0) (#21)

I've been in for 24 years and I've been in a unit that has females for over 17 years. I've deployed to Iraq with a significant percentage of females in my unit and I know how unique that situation is, especially in a combat environment. I would agree that the military was grindingly slow addressing it, they are slow at addressing everything. But again, equating a rape problem with the Bush presidency is incorrect in my opinion. He put us in that stupid war, and that was the first time we had ever had that many women on the battlefield for that length of time. What was already a problem was magnified. It finally got the attention it deserved and started getting addressed during the Bush administration and continues to be addressed to this day.

I'm not going to bat for Bush, I just disagree with you comment equating that situation to him.

Explain to me then (none / 0) (#22)
by Militarytracy on Tue Sep 20, 2011 at 10:06:57 AM EST
how our I.G. has such different interpretations of priorities and regulations under different leadership?  I think that is the key to where the breakdown occurs.

I'm also grateful for individuals like you who have no tolerance in creating or enforcing a command environment where rape is ignored because that is also key to this going on.  If the wrong person gets raped on your watch though and you don't go along with the powers that be, you could lose your career to what goes down and be munched under the gears of an administration that does not care and will not address because they are too busy creating history and you will be that history one way or the other.

My smartarse spouse was spitballing the next attack on allowing gays in the military.  Since the incidence of HIV infection is increasing in the general population in some places I suppose to people once again thinking that it can't happen to them, he says the next thing some winger pol will throw out there will be some stat that the incidence of HIV infection has doubled in the military since the lifting of DADT and that the health of our forces are now being put at risk.

I don't think the ugly is over yet.

secretly liked it if Nancy Grace had crashed and burned, she did just fine.  I would even root for her if she would just dance and not talk.

Chaz also did fine.  Better for the first part of the dance and then nerves kicked in or maybe he made a mistake or something.  I hope he gets to stay a while.

Loved Carson -- he was having a blast.  I hope he stays a while, too.
