last week. Dec. 4 1956, the most important day in the history of rock and roll, rockabilly, and country. All at one studio, Sun Records in Memphis...

because of the Million Dollar Quartet. Mentioned it to a friend, showed the first thousand words, and she wants to shop it... as long as I complete it!

    I repeat: keep writing.

That might be a great idea, actually. Jim's a great fellow, and he knows the good tables, and the good rooms.

US building secret drone bases in Africa, Arabian Peninsula

The Obama administration is assembling a constellation of secret drone bases for counterterrorism operations in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula as part of a newly aggressive campaign to attack al-Qaeda affiliates in Somalia and Yemen, U.S. officials said.

One of the installations is being established in Ethiopia, a U.S. ally in the fight against al-Shabab, the Somali militant group that controls much of that country. Another base is in the Seychelles, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, where a small fleet of "hunter-killer" drones resumed operations this month after an experimental mission demonstrated that the unmanned aircraft could effectively patrol Somalia from there.

The U.S. military also has flown drones over Somalia and Yemen from bases in Djibouti, a tiny African nation at the junction of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. In addition, the CIA is building a secret airstrip in the Arabian Peninsula so it can deploy armed drones over Yemen.

    Of course:

"The operation of the drones in Seychelles for the purposes of counter-piracy surveillance and other related activities has always been unarmed, and the U.S. government has never asked us for them to be armed," Adam said in an e-mail. "This was agreed between the two governments at the first deployment and the situation has not changed."

The State Department cables show that U.S. officials were sensitive to perceptions that the drones might be armed, noting that they "do have equipment that could appear to the public as being weapons."

To dispel potential concerns, they held a "media day" for about 30 journalists and Seychellois officials at the small, one-runway airport in Victoria, the capital, in November 2009. One of the Reapers was parked on the tarmac.

"The government of Seychelles invited us here to fight against piracy, and that is its mission," Craig White, a U.S. diplomat, said during the event. "However, these aircraft have a great deal of capabilities and could be used for other missions."

But I've probably lost 20lb (my husband likes a little junk in my trunk(lol)). Can't win. LOL

You know me always the optimist.

Everyone is fine, and looking forward to being together. We tried to make it easy for everyone. Took the insurance money(not much)paid for everyone room in the family. A hospitality suit for friday evening, breakfast in the AM. Service at 1130, followed by a catered brunch.
In some ways this a good time, imagine everyone surprised to find out today I am in the hospital.
I think they just want to put there hand on me(LOL).
I've only been in the hospital to have babies. I guess I will be leaving empty handed. I will admit I miss my mommy.
As far as the pneumonia,I can't change it. I will think about when I get back.
It will be a wonderful celebration of her Life.

I am so, so sorry to hear about your Mom.  I've never forgotten how you described your caring for her as your responsibility and your privilege.  She was so big a part of your life and that of your family.

I grieve with you.  Your loss reminds me of mine, and I'm crying for both of us right now.

Pirate Party scores in Berlin city elections. (none / 0) (#62)
by caseyOR on Wed Sep 21, 2011 at 06:45:14 PM EST
In the recent election the Pirate Party won nearly 9% of the seats in the Berlin city parliament. It may seem small, but we are talking about a political party named for sea-going buccaneers. And, this is how the Greens got their start.

While there are Pirate Party chapters in the U.S.A., no party member has yet won election in the U.S. AFAIK.

    Pirate Party platform. (5.00 / 1) (#65)
by caseyOR on Wed Sep 21, 2011 at 07:00:11 PM EST
The Pirate Party's core platform issues are:

Based on a core platform of patent law reform, privacy rights, transparency in government and free Internet access, the Pirate Party also promotes legalization of marijuana, a guaranteed basic income and free transport for all Berliners.

What's not to like? Just expand "free transport for all Berliners" to include all people, and the platform is good to go in the U.S.A.

Because once a member of a (recognized) pirate crew, one becomes a pirate. Welfare of any individual becomes the responsibility of all pirates.

by caseyOR on Wed Sep 21, 2011 at 07:11:53 PM EST
Perhaps this is not so much an issue in Berlin because Germany has good health care for all.

It is a big issue here. It deserves a prominent place in the platform.

of the Suskind book, but what a book.  The first chapter about Elizabeth Warren will piss you off if you hang out around here comfortably, it was what many of us suspected but didn't have much evidence of.  Second and third chapters...reliving the Obama campaign, remembering the best times of it and how wonderful some things were...because they really were all that and a bag of chips.

And if the first chapter (none / 0) (#87)

    Obama and Dunn's Statement (none / 0) (#88)
by AngryBlackGuy on Wed Sep 21, 2011 at 09:18:10 PM EST
Here's what he said he was told by former White House communications director Anita Dunn:

Looking back, this place would be in court for a hostile workplace....Because it actually fit all of the classic legal requirements for a genuinely hostile workplace for women.

    But here's the full quote:

I remember once I told Valerie [Jarrett] that, I said if it weren't for the president, this place would be in court for a hostile workplace....Because it actually fit all of the classic legal requirements for a genuinely hostile workplace to women.

    Link

That seems like an important distinction if you are evaluating Obama's reaction to gender issues in the WH.

    Drum:

"This doesn't necessarily change the substance of the charge about the White House atmosphere -- though it might, depending on what Dunn meant -- but it definitely changes what it suggests about Obama himself."

    Yeah (none / 0) (#107)
by lilburro on Thu Sep 22, 2011 at 06:58:30 AM EST
I think the WaPo article made the same point.  The quote is not meant to indicate Obama's personal treatment of women in the workplace, but rather the greater environment in general.
