    (At least, someone speculated) on sprots talk radio that the Mets are in a delicate balancing act with Reyes, who is now a free agent.  Could have been his call, so as not to chance it, and the Mets went along with it so as not to hurt his delicate widdle feelings.

    an equally bush league performance by the Yankees last night when they pulled all their starters and used a dozen pitchers. I'm a Rays fan since they are from Florida, but last night they came back against a Triple A squad making it far less exciting that it's made out to be.

    it's a shame civic-minded women have to get maced by goons to get people to notice, but thats usually the way it goes.  Seems more people are joining in everyday...political activists, hippies, and the homeless.  Very cool sh*t.

    I gotta get over there and pay those noble souls a visit...maybe Saturday.  I'll be sure to report my findings on the scene.

    This fall, there will be a "Personhood Amendment" on the ballot in Mississippi. Ballot Measure 26 will:

    ...change the meaning of the word "person" in the state constitution. Under the new language, human life would begin not at birth but at the moment of fertilization. If the amendment passes, it will outlaw abortion in the state entirely, even in cases of rape or incest.     One would think with real problems facing this country and presumably Alabama, that one, they would have their focus on the beings that are actually out of the womb, and that no-one would have a penny to spare on BS that we all know will get tossed in court.

    To me Alabama and Mississippi are the classic examples of what happens when republicans get everything they want in terms of policy.

     Good news all pneumonia cleared. Off oxygen and all meds. The dr are still mystified about this type of pneumonia. want me to comeback in 4months for more x-rays.
     I will admit I was a little frighten. And missed my mommy. But something good came from this,I stop smoking (mom and grandkids happy),the thought of smoking makes my chest hurt. Lost about 15 pounds (I hope that it). I never wanted to be a super thin person. My husband like a little junk in my trunk LOL.

    Not smoking is a good plan. Why make it even harder for your lungs to work?

    It sounds like you had a very rare type of pneumonia, if the doctors mystified. Hopefully, you will get x-rays in four months that show your lungs are clean as a whistle.

    I don't think you need to fret about your weight loss. Normally when people quit smoking they put on 15 - 20 lbs so you should soon be back to the same junk in your trunk as before rather than carrying around more extra baggage. ;o)

    as an opportunity to go the "Total" good health route if you are not currently doing that. IOW, make better and healthier food choices (less fat, and less calories), increase the number of steps you take each day and design a regular exercise program.

    Those steps should help you stay off the cigarettes too. Also find ways to keep your hands busy especially when you are sitting down. Knit, cross word puzzles etc rather than having your hands available for food or cigarettes.

    After several unsuccessful efforts to assassinate its own citizen, the U.S. succeeded today (and it was the U.S.).  It almost certainly was able to find and kill Awlaki with the help of its long-time close friend President Saleh, who took a little time off from murdering his own citizens to help the U.S. murder its.  The U.S. thus transformed someone who was, at best, a marginal figure into a martyr, and again showed its true face to the world.  The government and media search for The Next bin Laden has undoubtedly already commenced.

    What's most striking about this is not that the U.S. Government has seized and exercised exactly the power the Fifth Amendment was designed to bar ("No person shall be deprived of life without due process of law"), and did so in a way that almost certainly violates core First Amendment protections (questions that will now never be decided in a court of law). What's most amazing is that its citizens will not merely refrain from objecting, but will stand and cheer the U.S. Government's new power to assassinate their fellow citizens, far from any battlefield, literally without a shred of due process from the U.S. Government.  Many will celebrate the strong, decisive, Tough President's ability to eradicate the life of Anwar al-Awlaki -- including many who just so righteously condemned those Republican audience members as so terribly barbaric and crass for cheering Governor Perry's execution of scores of serial murderers and rapists -- criminals who were at least given a trial and appeals and the other trappings of due process before being killed.

    I'm not, by any means, excusing whatever it is that al-Awlaki has done or is alleged to have done, but once you can justify the assassination of one American citizen - however evil he or she is deemed to be - you can justify it for anyone else.

    It's the reason our privacy rights have been steadily and severely eroded - because someone decided  that national security trumped constitutional rights, and chucked it into the gutter.

    I remain exponentially more afraid of my government than I am of terrorists or terrorism.

    the uneasiness I have been feeling about this assassination of an American citizen. Slippery slope is way behind us; we are now careening down a cliff toward giant rocks below. The end game will not be pretty.

    By all accounts (if those accounts can be believed) al-Awlaki advocated violence against Americans.  Still, he was an American citizen. And he was hardly the first citizen to encourage violence against the U.S. Except for the fact that he was a muslim, al-Awlaki does not strike me as all that different from the many rightwing militia groups operating in the U.S. and advocating the violent overthrow of the government.  

    If advocating, encouraging, preaching (choose your verb) violence  is now an offense that permits the president to order assassination, how long before American citizens living here are targeted? Are we only going to assassinate muslim Americans? Or are Christians also to be targeted? Are we only going after fundamentalists, or will the President decide that those on the left are also fair game?

    This is bad, this is very bad. We have entered a dark night of the soul. I fear we will never find our ay out.

    I would be very disappointed in you.  I'm in a different place in this and I accept that.  Al Qaeda is the reason why my husband deploys though, if they get through again there will be fresh Americana insanity and more soldiers going to war.  At no point if and when we are attacked again will that inspire us to just give up and accept a new norm of being attacked by terrorists.

    I sit on a cusp, the success of al Awlaki and others changes my life and what everyone here will deal with on a daily basis.  I know that many people don't feel the war or see the war but I feel the war and see the war.  If we are successfully hit tomorrow morning my life will get real different once again real quick.

    Al Qaeda would laugh their butts off and he wouldn't be here to provide any defense of self, how does that work?  Sounds so stupid to me.  Awlaki joined a war effort, was a propaganda machine for a war effort.  He was in my opinion a warrior on the battlefield.  In any war, since when has the place of your birth mattered...the only thing I've ever known to matter in a war was who you were fighting for and I know who he was fighting for.

    I think that what some people are suggesting--after one reads the something-like "first we'll have a procedure/trial, and then after he's found guilty...."  IMO, a show trial would have even been worse. Also, IMO, as-Awlaki did more than talk & inspire: he acted; he joined forces & operations with the legally declared enemy.  This is not a criminal case; it is a classic combatant situation.

    Lots of really nerdy brainy people but all military or GS, most of the GS are ex-military and one shrink included too who has never been military but works within the structure now.  I think I'm the only true blue liberal at any of these things, I know I'm the only admitted one, but we still have community in spite of it.

    It was brought up though that having 1% of the population, all volunteers and responsible for the safety of the nation that a military affords, allows the facts and the need for suvival to become too skewed in the public debate.  I'm not so sure of that.  The debate seems fine to me and healthy, God forbid if nobody shows up to argue for our better angels.

    If we had mandatory public service and more public skin overall on the military side of things would anything be improved for the better?  I'm not sure of it at all.  I know that because our forces are volunteer and extremely self motivated and competitive we have amazing people who handle the very worst things and they do it with extreme skill and competence.  And no matter how much skin and varied skin is in the real ground game we will always have those arguing for world peace NOW.  I do have a diary that I want to write about the recent Al Qaeda successes.  But I need to approach it all from a very respectful place, I know my audience by now :) I've been so P.O.d at Obama lately though it is very hard to write a diary in praise of his military effort.

    It seems awful to me that our Commander in Chief is supporting, allowing, and arguing for polices that are doing horrible damage to the citizens of the country.  The military is supposed to be standing on the wall, protecting this area so that the Democratic process can take place and voices be what is heard instead of power, violence, and force being all that is heard.  But is that what is happening at this time?

    It is mighty kind that the oligarchy hasn't gouged me and screwed me over yet, because they need me and they know it. But I also recognize an oligarchy when I see one, paychecks and guaranteed healthcare for my family has not made me blind to the facts and what is really going on out there.

    awesome wine out there that I think is a blend.  We have a get together tonight so I will write the info down then because telling me something on the phone does nothing if I'm not writing it down.  But I did recall that it is from Herding Cats Winery.  I looked them up, there are many ways to embibe with herding cats.  Very reasonable right now too, but if they are good that will change.

    is Herding Cats Merlot/Pinotage the older the better .  She also gave me the name Jirdilede 2004 at around $13, but this was after several sampled wines.  I can't find a thing online about it though and I swear I wrote her words accurately on my hand. I think several wines have come in between the information and the actionable intelligence :)  She is bringing me a bottle though sometime next week and surely we will all be able to read the label accurately then and I will report back:)

    They will not be charging a fee for using debt card. They are eliminating their rewards program though.

    I find it handy not to carry much cash or a check book so I do use my debit card quite a bit. Would definitely quit using it if they ever start charging me for allowing them to generate fees from merchants when I use their card.

    The problem is finding one where I qualify for membership. I will also probably keep the BoA account (at least minimally) for the mere fact that there is a branch near my mom's house in metro Detroit, so when I go visit, I am not hit with stupid ATM fees, or she can put money in my account if I desperately need it (which, unfortunately, I have a couple of times in the last year).

    Maybe PNC - they still aren't doing these fees (although, it's probably a matter of time) and they also have branches here and back in Michigan.

    ATM network. You can use network ATMs anywhere at no charge, just like you can use BoA's all over w/o charge. You could withdraw $$$ in Michigan, and your mom could deposit $$$.

    There are credit unions that are open to everyone in a geographic area. It's not like the sold days when credit unions were only open to employees of specific companies or union members. Just off the top of my head I can name five CUs here in Portland where I qualify for membership simply because I live in Portland.

    Look for the word "community" in the name. That often means the CU membership is determined by location.

    I will never pay those types of fees even if I have to put my ATM on ice and go back to checks/cash. I will suffer any inconvenience not to give in to these craven banks who first eliminated the jobs and now want us to subsidize their incompetence and unrestrained greed.

    I agree re: credit unions. I'm trying to figure out the logistics of moving my accounts.

    I will end where I began. I started with Hill Financial who got taken over by Meridian Bank during the S&L crisis. Who got taken over by Core States. Who got taken over by Wachovia. Who got taken over by Wells Fargo.

    are owned by BNP Paribas, a giant multinational finance corporation headquartered in Paris, France. I believe they are the largest, or second largest, financial corporation in the world.

    Although 1st Hawaiian came through the crisis in decent shape, it is still part of the international banking industry. It executives fight against sensible regulation right alongside Jamie Dimon and Lloyd Blankfein.

    IMO, the better choice is to find a local credit union or a community bank, one with no ties to the mega- financial companies. I prefer an institution that is focused on and committed to my community.

    Sadly that would mean no trips to Hawaii to visit your money.
