A New Specific Terror Threat for 9/11

ABC News skipped the analysis after President Obama's speech to cover an unconfirmed but specific terror threat from an outside country connected to 9/11. The target may be Washington or New York. The threat came in Wednesday night. Obama was briefed today.

CBS is covering the speech. NBC went to football.

underestimate the power of a threat to bring people back into line, remind them how important all that defense spending is, and make them more amenable to social safety net "changes" so we don't have to put our security at risk.

I guess I have terminal cynicism, but I just don't ever trust or believe them when they leak "news" about terror threats; all I could think was, "this is all about reminding the people what a big burden Onama has," so we all go easy on the criticism.

    From CNN:

Earlier Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told reporters that intelligence officials had picked up "lots of chatter" on jihadi websites and elsewhere about the impending 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks "and we're taking it all seriously," but nothing yet that warranted issuing a threat advisory.

Nonetheless, the department will be at a heightened level of readiness as the nation commemorates the anniversary, "staffing up" the Federal Air Marshals Service and other agencies, she said.

"We don't have something that would reach that standard (of a credible threat), but we still have lots of chatter out there. And we take every bit of that seriously and are tracking it down," Napolitano said. "In the intel world, there's lots of chatter, and we're taking it all seriously. And should there be something that rises to the level where I have to issue a threat advisory, we will issue a threat advisory."

A federal official told CNN's Mike Ahlers that Napolitano was aware of the threat when she made those remarks.

Napolitano said it is not uncommon to see increased chatter before major events. "We know it's an iconic day to al Qaeda, in part because of what was found at the (Osama bin Laden) compound. So we are preparing accordingly," she said.

"I don't want to give those (details) out because I don't want to tell the bad guys exactly what we're doing," Napolitano said. "But I think it's fair to say that in addition to asking citizens to be vigilant and so forth, that we have ourselves leaned forward and have made sure that we are doing all that we can from the DHS perspective."

They all get the same information, and then, through the prism of disparate advisors, they interpret it differently. And then, when they brief their different constituencies, they use all kinds of obfuscation, distortion, and misleading information, believing they're "informing," but not too much.

In other words, I don't think all those on the "list" are given precise instructions on how to disseminate the intel.

I can't help but remember the night we were told of OBL's killing, Brennan all but wound himself into a rubber band ball twisting, exaggerating, and spinning the news. And I'm saying to myself, "this is the guy first in line with the secret stuff?"

    contradictory statements in linked article.

From Homeland Security Department spokesman Matt Chandler:

"It's accurate that there is specific, credible but unconfirmed threat information," Homeland Security Department spokesman Matt Chandler said in a statement. "As we always do before important dates like the anniversary of 9/11, we will undoubtedly get more reporting in the coming days."

From Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano:

Thursday morning, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told reporters that there was "a lot of chatter" around the anniversary of the attacks but that there was no information about a specific threat.

O.K. is Chandler correct and there is a specific threat or is Napolitano correct and there is no specific threat?

Also why am I the one asking this question? Shouldn't AP be clarifying this discreptancy before going to print?

Officials say the alleged terror plot was initiated by new al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden's successor.
