New Year College Bowl Game Open Thread

The picks:

Houston -7½ over Penn State (3 units), Georgia -3 over Michigan St. (3 units), South Carolina -3 over Nebraska (5 units), Oregon -6 over Wisconsin (3 units).

My best bet of many years was discussed weeks ago - Oklahoma State (-3) over Stanford (50 units.) Today the line is -5.

Go Gators!

Your issue with the Gator Bowl is still flawed. You're welcome to re-evaluate their choice of course, but the Gator Bowl is contracted to get the 6th choice of an SEC team and the 5th choice from the Big Ten.

The next pick in the SEC after the Gators went to the Auto Zone Liberty Bowl (Vanderbilt). The next pick after Ohio State went to the Meineke Car Care Bowl (Northwestern). So technically you are right, the Gator Bowl had the option of choosing Vanderbilt vs Northwestern rather than Florida vs Ohio State.

Writing about the passage of and Obama's signing into law the Indefinite Detention sections of the 2012 NDAA along with the entire bill, Naomi Wolf has this to say...

Perhaps Congress assumes that it will always only be 'they' who are targeted for arrest and military detention: but sadly, Parliamentary leaders are the first to face pressure, threats, arrest and even violence when the military obtains the power to make civilian arrests and hold civilians in military facilities without due process. There is no exception to this rule.

Just as I traveled the country four years ago warning against the introduction of torture and secret prisons - and confidently offering a hundred thousand dollar reward to anyone who could name a nation that allowed torture of the 'other' that did not eventually turn this abuse on its own citizens - (confident because I knew there was no such place) - so today I warn that one cannot name a nation that gave the military the power to make civilian arrests and hold citizens in military detention, that did not almost at once turn that power almost against members of that nation's own political ruling class.

Read the whole thing. It's worth it...

by Militarytracy on Mon Jan 02, 2012 at 08:06:13 PM EST
I asked for some new fragrances for Christmas.  My daughter and her family were at Dillards, and the woman at the perfume counters was giving them spray sticks to smell.  They chose the one they thought smelled best and suited me best.  It wasn't until they got home that they realized that they had bought me Justin Bieber.

They have toddlers.  Driving 30 miles and going through a shopping mall with toddlers again to exchange my scent isn't happening.  They wrapped it, apologized, told me I could take it back but what sort of snob won't try some Bieber?

I sniffed it, smelled good.....I'm wearing Justin Bieber Always.  Wore it for New Years Eve too, and even admitted to it.

BRITAIN is gearing up for fighting in Syria that could be bigger and bloodier than the battle against Gaddafi.

The Ministry of Defence is drawing up secret plans for a NATO-sponsored no-fly zone but first it needs backing from the United Nations Security Council.

As the unrest and killings escalate in the troubled Arab state, agents from MI6 and the CIA are already in Syria assessing the situation, a security official has revealed.

Special forces are also talking to Syrian dissident soldiers.

They want to know about weapons and communications kit rebel forces will need if the Government decides to help.

"MI6 and the CIA are in Syria to infiltrate and get at the truth," said the well-placed source.

but considering that Iran has the US surrounded in the region ;-), and considering the current nose to nose locked and loaded naval standoff between Iran and the US in the Strait of Hormuz right now, it looks to me that they are going to go, and maybe sooner than later... and the nuts at AEI are talking themselves into it....

The biggest problem for the United States is not Iran getting a nuclear weapon and testing it, it's Iran getting a nuclear weapon and not using it. Because the second that they have one and they don't do anything bad, all of the naysayers are going to come back and say, "See, we told you Iran is a responsible power. We told you Iran wasn't getting nuclear weapons in order to use them immediately." ... And they will eventually define Iran with nuclear weapons as not a problem.

But to do it they have to do Syria first.

It's going to happen. The only question, as BTD noted up above, is timing. But it's already started.

Obama administration secretly preparing options for aiding the Syrian opposition
    thecable.foreignpolicy.com, December 28, 2011

...the administration does see the status quo in Syria as unsustainable. The Bashar al Assad regime is a "dead man walking," State Department official Fred Hof said this month. So the administration is now ramping up its policymaking machinery on the issue. After several weeks of having no top-level administration meetings to discuss the Syria crisis, the National Security Council (NSC) has begun an informal, quiet interagency process to create and collect options for aiding the Syrian opposition, two administration officials confirmed to The Cable.
    [snip]
Andrew Tabler, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, said that the administration was caught off-guard by how the opposition became militarized so quickly. The administration's message had been to urge the opposition to remain peaceful, but that ship has now sailed, he said.

What's Obama's Plan B after Arab League monitors?

In the end, there is one constant, recurring theme. While the Obama administration entertains hopes that regional states would take the lead, in reality, these governments are waiting for the US to assume its traditional leadership role. Whether it's Turkey or the Arab League, everyone, one way or another, is throwing the issue back at Washington. The notion that the US can remain above the fray in Syria and still shape an outcome in line with its interests was never a realistic option.

PPP: Bad News for Romney (none / 0) (#19)

    Link

"The Public Policy Poll included 1,340 likely Republican caucus voters, and was conducted Saturday and Sunday.  Results show Paul with 20 percent of the vote, followed closely by Romney with 19 percent and Santorum with 18 percent."

Since conservatives/evangelicals are most likely to brave the cold to vote in the Iowa primary and the Pauldroids are fanatics, it wouldn't be surprising if Romney ended up 3rd behind Ron Paul and Rick Santorum.  Heck, that's my prediction.

if the ducks don't make too many mistakes, they win. too many fumbles and penalties and they lose.

You are a cowboy.  It must be a bigger lock than they got at the Panama Canal.  Good luck on that wager, BTD.  (And forgive me if I'm mistaken on the unit translation.)

...is done, put a fork in him.  He will not be able to make anything the rest of the game.  Not an FG or EP, but he won't have to, it'll be over in ten seconds.

Why would you go for a field goal when you have the best quarterback in the country and the defense is getting tired?  Good coach made a bad conservative mistake. They should have gone for a touchdown in the last regular time drive.
Oh, well, I am a frustrated armchair quarterback.  Sorry, BTD, I tried to send the Force.

cautious play calling on that last drive.  And especially unwise to then turn the game over to a very young and inexperienced kicker who'd already missed one makeable fg . If it's fourth and goal from the two with the ball square in the middle of the field then fine, but not from much farther out than an extra point.

Well, too many of the teams out west seem to have a fatal weakness in the kicking position.  They also need to improve on the defensive side of the ball where championships are usually won.
