Annoying Media Site of the Day

The Denver Post picked a terrible week to add a most annoying feature to its website. There's now an animated bar across the bottom of every page. I haven't been able to close it. It may be the most annoying media feature next to sites that automatically play video when you click on a news article (ABC News in particular.) It's even more annoying than sites like MSNBC where you have to scroll halfway down the page before you get to the article.

The Post should fire whatever agency came up with this lame idea. Until it removes the obnoxious bottom bar, I'm not reading the Denver Post.

So where to get local news of the upcoming presidential debate and other issues?

Update: Today there is an arrow in the center of the bar you can click on to collapse. I also was able to block it with my virus software. So I'll be reading the Denver Post again.

That might be one of the junkiest, (5.00 / 1) (#5)

most cluttered websites I've ever seen - even without the animated ads; in fact, it seems more like a giant advertising platform with an occasional news report thrown in.

It's a perfect example of why I still like to read an actual newspaper every day.

is swirling down the drain. It's commenting system is horrible. More pop ups ads than one of those sites with illegal video feeds of NBA games (so I'm told), and when you do finally get actual content loaded, the content is mediocre at best.

    Firefox Add-On "NoScript" (none / 0) (#1)
by Andreas on Mon Oct 01, 2012 at 11:31:12 PM EST
For Firefox an add-on named NoScript is available.

That can be used to block the execution of JavaScript from denverpost.com.

it blocked the Denver Post script, but when I clicked on TalkLeft, only the mobile version came up and the desktop button didn't bring up the site. So if you want to read Talkleft, don't use noscript.

I think Firefox lets you disable javascript without using add ons. I'm checking into that now.

    Selectively block JavaScript (none / 0) (#17)

With the NoScript add-on one can decide for each domain one wants to block the execution of JavaScript files served from it. talkleft.com is perfectly usable with that.

    Flashblocker.

I almost never see a video I don't wish to see.

    I think my IE9 browser disabled the add-on. (none / 0) (#4)

I didn't have any problem with loading the home page and there was no annoying animated bar across the bottom. What browser do you use?

    There's a little down-arrow (none / 0) (#10)

at the top of the annoying bar that allows you to collapse it down to nothing.  All that remains when you do that is a little up-arrow that allows you to expand the bar again.

Not as good as nothing, but better than the bar itself.

    And it's (none / 0) (#14)

Turkish, again.  What the heck is it with all the Turkish spam in recent times?  It used to mostly come from Russia and the Slavic countries.

....as in just clicking the grey down arrow in the middle to hide it? That wasn't hard at all to find, btw.

no collapsible arrow on my screen. Today there is, so I've updated my post and will read the Post again. I think you can also block it with settings in Firefox and IE, although I haven't figured out how to do that since I don't want to block all javascript, just that particular one.
